Hmm...talk about coffee, if i dont remember wrong, i did read in the vietnam thread that you have tried the Luwak Coffee in vietnam before. If you happen to be in Batam at any point of time, perhaps can bring some over and to make a comparison between both place's quality of Luwak Coffee.

For a healthier choice, coffee is best to drink w/o sugar and/or creamer. :p

Vietnam dun have pre-packed 3 in 1 or 2 in 1 Luwak coffee or Weasel coffee...the one I bought were beans grounded to powder and need to drip using coffee filter...:)

Believe it or not, on those dates from 9 Aug onward.
I guess those popular places for short trip such as JB, Batam, Bangkok, etc will be packed as it's also a rare occasion with 2 public holidays back to back. I am also considering to go over next Thursday.

Not many people understands that by skipping one of the usual 3 MAIN meals a day.
Agreed, one can have several meals a day but with smaller portion and healthy food like what Dr M or some elderly said, small portion and 70% full is good enough. I have 4-5 meals a day sometimes starting at 7am, 10am, 12pm, 3pm and sometime 6-6.30pm.

I am a believer of "the food is the medicine and the medicine is the food". I also agreed with you that our body is capable of self healing. It is good if 1 can abide to healthy food and good living habit but it requires a lot of discipline. We sometimes go against nature by sleeping late instead of before 10-11pm, over eating especially if it is buffet which we paid so much and need to recover the cost :) and eating unhealthy food especially a lot of processed food nowadays.

I have a friend who is 70 years old and he looks younger, full of energy and walk faster than me :) He does not take dinner for 10 years, do a lot of walking and eat healthily though he does drink beer and hard liquor.

I tried eating healthily and I do feel my body changing. I feel lighter and only fall sick once with running nose for past 1 year. It is rarely to found someone like you who understand and appreciate the concept. I would also like to recommend you a documentary, Food Choices which you can find it in YouTube. It clarify most of the myth one has on food.

Stay at Harmoni Hotel. Comfy and nice. Surrounding very convenient.

I believe most who are new to Batam has not seen the old Formosa Hotel room i have seen before,hehehe...they have every charging cable for every mobile phone (above) and they even provide Pop Mie instant noodle (below) during every housekeeping make up room for guest which they no longer do so today.

Years back, fitness center (below) aka a gym used to be on the 2nd floor and has now moved to the 4th floor inside King Massage,hehehe...more equipment has been added tho. Never seen a single soul using it before.

On the right hand side of the counter (below photo), used to be called Business center, where i could rent a computer to use like i did in an internet cafe. Which makes this hotel rather unique. (they charge me 2k rupiah per hour of usage tho, which equates to S$0.20 today)

The developer no longer selling the apartment tho but buyers are retailing the purchsed apartment at Rumah for about S$96k onward...hehehe...and the project would tentatively be completed by end of 2019 whereby the keys will be handed to their new home owners. Hurray!!

Mainly 2 types of room in it, standard and Family room. I hear from my friends that they are non-smoking room, so i guess it wont be suitable for me. :p

According to my friends, the beds in the room is new. The bad about the hotel is :

1. No elevator for a 2 floor hotel (top floor i think is something else)

2. No Breakfast for the price stated

3. No smoking room

4. No in-house restaurant for food

5. Hotel staff/s dont speak English/Chinese

So practically hotel guest cant get anything from the hotel. But my friend did mention a good point.

They allow guest/s to book online taxi. And they even can help their guest to book too.

Not my kind of hotel to stay in tho.

Then again, i believe most would have already notice Dynasty 99 is just beside this hotel from the 1st picture,hehehe...they are currently under renovation now, whereby many passerby/s have thought they could have closed down.

Maybe on my last time I was so distracted by other things, that I did not notice the change, or I simply forgot.
The only things that I am sure were not there, on my last visits, are the multiple cables for charging phones and that horrible controller for aircondition and lights. They never worked well, however.

Its actually a small scale KTV inside Memory Hotel. Google Batam memory hotel, and you are already there.

Or to be a little more indirect, its actually behind New Hotel. Look at it this way, step out of New Hotel glass door entrance, turn right walk straight but when you reach a cornering, turn right and continue to walk straight (about 70 steps away),hehehe...you should see either Memory KTV and/or Memory hotel.

If still cannot find, simply walk the block of New Hotel ONE Round.

Extra Note : I just learned that opposite Lumba Lumba Inn Hotel is New Hotel (blocked in between by a big drain tho). Just so in case you couldnt find Memory. According to my friends, its still in buisness.

Golden Bird (Sedona) - can't find the place either. Went to Sambal Mentah Bude Ida - look around. Don't see anything that looked liked it.

Gold Bird is no longer in that name but has change to another name called Hai Lai (or so i heard). Look out for Lai Lai Hotel (google it),walk to Batam Star hotel which is just beside Lai Lai and then try to walk behind Batam Star hotel. You should see it. It's literally behind the block of living quarter of Batam Star Hotel and opposite it is Gold Bird.

Go behind DC Mall aka back entrance and not the front. Many has mistakenly cross opposite the front of DC mall instead hence they cannot reach Bunga but ends somewhere almost to J8 food court,hehehe...

Since you are already at Sakura, and its behind Utama Hotel. You should actually try to circle Utama hotel one round. You should see many wonderful basic places,hehehe... ranging from MPs to eating coffe shops to booking joints.

Been reading up the threads with keen interest since i will be heading Batam on 14th Aug. Had finally decided to extend a night's stay instead of the usual day trip (work purpose). Came back from batam few days ago..Went in on Sun...Batam custom was jammed for almost 1hr..i stayed at Harmoni One hotel..i had a bathtub inside my room..But on tat aftern..we went to opp nagoya hill shopping center...most of the clean massage centers were either closed or fully booked..sianz..went for makan instead and shopping..night we went to nagoya center for a short chill out ..went to cock and bull cafe to watch arsenal n man u match..the waitress there some r pretty..But heard the Foreplay pub is nicer but abit ex..mayb i w try next time..

They are all physical ticket. And they are open ticket where one can make changes on ferry timing and dates within its expiry date.

Must be extra careful when buying, there're 2 types of Btmfast open ferry tix in the market. One can only goes from Tanah Merah to HBB & other btm ferry terminal, the another type can goes from any ferry terminal in sg to any ferry terminal in btm. ;)

Agreed, one can have several meals a day but with smaller portion and healthy food like what Dr M or some elderly said, small portion and 70% full is good enough. I have 4-5 meals a day sometimes starting at 7am, 10am, 12pm, 3pm and sometime 6-6.30pm.

One little thing to point out, please do eat on time (interval no more than 45 to 60 mins), whether the amount of food that goes into one's stomach is big or small. As we age, our body works like a clock, there's a fix time for our stomach's acid to step out to help us digest food and at that period of time when there's no food to digest, it will start to hurt. Doctor call it, Gastric...and if not taken in proper care, the next level of illness would be stomach ulcer.

I am a believer of "the food is the medicine and the medicine is the food". I also agreed with you that our body is capable of self healing. It is good if 1 can abide to healthy food and good living habit but it requires a lot of discipline. We sometimes go against nature by sleeping late instead of before 10-11pm, over eating especially if it is buffet which we paid so much and need to recover the cost :) and eating unhealthy food especially a lot of processed food nowadays.

I am a food therapy person, but i arent that discipline enough type to eat whats right all the time,hence i will pick a time to indulge myself in food i like at a certain point of time. Everyone is different,and what suits me is the best and what suits me doesnt mean its gonna suit everybody. Its my way of calling it "balance" (not exactly a balance diet tho).

I have a friend who is 70 years old and he looks younger, full of energy and walk faster than me :) He does not take dinner for 10 years, do a lot of walking and eat healthily though he does drink beer and hard liquor.

Coincidentally, the friends i got to know in Batam who are older than me, some in their late 50s/60s, some in their 70s and there is even 2 or 3 of them in their 80s,...9 out of 10 of them were as fit as an Ox,hehehe...

Remember i mentioned about Samat, the security guard in Singapore? He passed on at the age of 80 plus,hehehe...even the cleaner who lose most of his money, he also passed on almost reaching 70 (he's less healthy for some reason/s tho).

Tell me, which men dont wish to be live over 70/80 and yet can still run around and may even bonk around? Some made it, some dont...but there's always hope,hehehe...and these hopes can start by living healthily today. :D

I tried eating healthily and I do feel my body changing. I feel lighter and only fall sick once with running nose for past 1 year. Went to Batam recently after 6 years. Took the 9.40am ferry to Harbourbay Batam. Once reach, went to lv 2 Horizon counter and collect my pocket wifi. I had a problem connecting so took a taxi for 30k to City Central Hotel. Paid 40k total inc tips.

Reach hotel paid deposit 100k and got a room. The room was spacious and clean but no deposit box. I chose this hotel as it is hidden, dont like crowded place. I was hungry and ordered nasi padang with GoFood. Price is 40k total which is cheap as they give generous servings, enough for 2 people.

12.30pm decide to walk to booking joints. My wifi is up and running so easy to navigate. I followed Bro Nono's map and reach JV Happy 8. There was 10 girls but not to my liking. Walk from there to Kupu Kupu Joint. Papi gathered all the girls, around 10 girls also. Took 1 that smiled at me, nego from 1.5 Juta to 1.2 Juta. Asked Papi to send her my room at 3pm. Buy condoms and rokok and went back to hotel.

Book a grab to hotel for 13k. Ordered Satay with GrabFood for 45k. We had 20 sticks and lontong so quite cheap. Had 2nd shot before sleep.

The next morning i had 1 last shot with her before she goes back. Gave her some tips, procede to breakfast downstairs. Compare to Lovina Inn Hotel next door, the breakfast was good. Got fruits, bread, porridge, rice and coffee. Went for a 2 hours clean massage for 200k near Nagoya Hill. After that eat at A&W, in Batam there is no Q at all. Took a Grab for 13k to Harbourbay and took ferry back home.

It was a memorable trip after 6 long years. Batam has improve a lot, now with Grab and Gojek around. No need to hassle with taxis for fares and can order food anywhere anytime. Be careful when booking Grab around places with taxi drivers, drivers tend to avoid to pick you up. A big shoutout to Bro Nono's useful information, refreshed my memory instantly.

Believe it or not, on those dates from 9 Aug onward, u will never be able to find a room good enough in all yr preferred hotels.

In my time in Batam, i never really like going there during weekends or public holiday time, let alone super long weekend time (unles its CNY)...hehehe...i dont like crowd. If i chose to squeeze with the crowd, i might just as well stay in Sillypore to crowd around,hehehe...

Vietnam dun have pre-packed 3 in 1 or 2 in 1 Luwak coffee or Weasel coffee...the one I bought were beans grounded to powder and need to drip using coffee filter...

Actually if you happen to see those 2/1 or 3/1 pre-packed Luwak coffees in Batam, they arent exactly real luwak coffees,hehehe...the powdered coffee were mix with few other different types of coffee powder. There is only a very small portion of version 3 luwak coffees in it. Then again, they arent totally fake either...hehehe...

Huh? Those photos i posted were from around 5 or more years ago...they (the hotel) have changed in many ways and the latest room were of the last time you visited Formosa in your 2019 trip.

Maybe on my last time I was so distracted by other things, that I did not notice the change, or I simply forgot.
The only things that I am sure were not there, on my last visits, are the multiple cables for charging phones and that horrible controller for aircondition and lights. They never worked well, however.

Those things were no longer there in Formosa Hotel.

Quite stupid tho, they no longer has that TV channel list. The air-con and lights controller device EOL-ed, mobile phone charging cables replaced by USB port on the wall etc. All 2nd floor toilet's bath tub were taken out (my personal safe box were gone,hehehe...), and replaced by standing shower area. Showering area's floor were replaced by sandy concrete so it becomes less slippery.

They took out most of the room's carpet too, so now you can only see some carpeted rooms on the 3rd floor.

They never wash their curtain for ages tho (no hotels i know do that yet), well...i did it for them instead. So if you are staying in your usual room you stayed in the last time, the curtain should actually be cleaner than most of their other rooms,hehehe...but not so sure today. :D

Actually, even with Grab / GoJek, Batam a lot of places still very hard to get Grab. Firstly, no long-term SIM card like in JB (so I suppose you rented WiFi from SG?), and as you said, taxi drivers are mafia af, will gang up and chase you down. Once I take from Batam Centre, I walk almost 1 km away to get my grab. KNN, the taxi drivers follow me. Sibei chor.

Seriously, don't know when they will do something about these kind of Mafia-ish behaviour. Even in Bali also sama-sama.

There has been booths for property agents in BCS since last year, same for most other shopping malls. But if there is any exhibition/s at the other Pintu 3 entrance where the exhibition hall is at, then i think its worth going there to take a look if i happen to be there,hehehe...

Instead of just properties in Batam, i am also having other thoughts now. Then again, those were just thoughts, nothing concrete as yet.

I checked the rental pricing in Batam as well.

1. Most condo apartment that catches my interest cost about 500 juta (about S$50k) and/or up

2. Most condo apartment that catches my interest ,if i wish to rent probably cost about 5 juta (about S$500) a month. And one of them cost around 3.6 juta (about S$360) a month.

This is one of my ideal apartment to rent, cost about 36 juta (or about S$3600) a year.

The only problem i had with Grab / Gojek is Nagoya Hill Mall which i had to walk outside to Indomaret for pickup and Harbourbay Terminal. Grab / Gojek drivers will sms you in advance they dont want to meet the taxi drivers. Other places works fine for me.

I usually use a free pick up from Hotel or walk back to hotel (since so nearby). Walking time taken were most time shorter than taking taxis anyway.

One thing i often do is, i will try to avoid to the best i could from taking taxis whenever i am in Nagoya Hill Mall. Its my money, why should i use it to support mafia-ism (according to bro ssleight's words on "mafia" taxis) ? On a fairer point, taxi driver/s in Nagoya Hill Mall also have every rights not to earn my money from my wallet.

Thank heaven, there is still BCS, DC Mall, Grand Batam and Harbour Bay Mall (Kepril Mall and Mega Mall is not for me hence i shant add them on). In an unlikely event i need to visit Nagoya Hill Mall, i just buy less so that what i carry on hand will not be heavy,hehehe....

The whole picture is quite clear cut, want to go Nagoya Hill Mall? Dont take online taxi. (actually to be exact is, want to step out of Nagoya Hill Mall, cannot use online taxi,hehehe...) And i simply look for other alternatives rather than using those conventional (mafia) taxis if i have to visit Nagoya Hill Mall. Thats the solution for myself,hehehe... :D

Huh? Those photos i posted were from around 5 or more years ago...they (the hotel) have changed in many ways and the latest room were of the last time you visited Formosa in your 2019 trip.
I really admit I look so dumb. I think Formosa's Old Golden Times are so well impressed in my memory, that when you posted those old photos I thought "Ah this is my Formosa" feeling like when I was there exploring my first steps, and removing the memory of new rooms.


They never wash their curtain for ages tho (no hotels i know do that yet), well...i did it for them instead. So if you are staying in your usual room you stayed in the last time, the curtain should actually be cleaner than most of their other rooms,hehehe...but not so sure today. :D

The next questions would be, 100 over girls in Permata, where did they all goes to? Hehehe... not all of them goes back to hometown. Most of them were not very highly educated, where would they go to find jobs? Where did the 2 young super model i used to talk about goes to?

Permata Indah used to be the best booking joint for me as most if not all of the cewek there are young and have good manners and service. Can get young and nice looking cewek at average 1 to 1.2 juta per day. Mami also have good customer service...Location is good and always not so crowded... It is a real pity that it closes too soon...

I remembered I ever book a cewek there for short time for one hour. The fee I paid will be half the price of the booking fee per day. (example 1 juta cewek will be 500k) Then they will arrange the customer to go to haihai hotel opposite the joint with the cewek for the short time service. Kondom and mineral water provided.. :)

Those things were no longer there in Formosa Hotel.

Quite stupid tho, they no longer has that TV channel list. The air-con and lights controller device EOL-ed, mobile phone charging cables replaced by USB port on the wall etc. All 2nd floor toilet's bath tub were taken out (my personal safe box were gone,hehehe...), and replaced by standing shower area. Showering area's floor were replaced by sandy concrete so it becomes less slippery.

They took out most of the room's carpet too, so now you can only see some carpeted rooms on the 3rd floor.

After they did the refurbishment to the rooms few years ago, most of the room at level 2 has been converted to timber floor with standing shower.

However the level 3 rooms still have plenty of carpet room with bath tub. Hopefully they don't convert all the level 3 rooms to timber floor...

Some of the reasons I will still opt for carpet floor room over timber floor room are:

1) After shower with wet body, standing on the carpet is not so freezing cold compared to timber floor...

2) Sense of cosiness with soft carpet feel.

3) Will not fall when standing on carpet unlike timber floor in the room tends to be slippery with wet feet

4) Cheaper to book...weekday rate 480k per night compared to timber floor room at 510k

5) Can relax at the bath tub compare to standing shower (timber floor room)

6) Brings back good old memories of Formosa in the 90s and early 2000s as it retains the original ambience of the room..

7) Rooms with carpet tends to look more premium :)

Must be extra careful when buying, there're 2 types of Btmfast open ferry tix in the market. One can only goes from Tanah Merah to HBB & other btm ferry terminal, the another type can goes from any ferry terminal in sg to any ferry terminal in btm. ;)

From Harbour Front to Harbour Bay ferry tickets were a few dollar more expensive than from Tanah Merah to Harbour Bay,hehehe... :D

On Batamfast open ticket from Harbour Front to Harbour Bay for me:

Pros :

1. Expiry date is much further (comparing to orange ticket from horizon ferry that last only about 2 months). I get to keep the open ticket for a longer period of time.

2. An alternative in case Horizon failed me (i kiasu ma,hehehe...) or when Horizon ferry sailing slot is FULL during peak days/hours.

Cons :

1. Usually about a dollar of 2 more expensive than Horizon Ferry tickets.

2. Only 4 available ferrying slots from Harbour Bay to Singapore and vice versa.

I am constantly camping for cheaper ferry tickets. I dont buy/sell them to make money but more on barter trading them for a longer period of expiry.

Example : I buy S$15 orange ticket, trade it with friends for a pair of 2 way Batamfast/Horizon ferry ticket that expires somewhere middle/end of next year. That way, I saved about S$33 each ticket and almost everytime i go Batam.

Over time, i accumulated a handful of these tickets but i cant sell it becos i know i need it for future use when i traveled to Batam.

I also tried the carrot cake at both sides at 16k each.

I find that many black carrot cakes in Batam were mostly sweeter compare to the common ones in Singapore (black to black), hence most of them were not to my liking. So in Batam, i mainly take the white ones only and the most suitable ones so far for myself were from Formosa Hotel Vienna Restaurant, during breakfast time.

Tea Story also has carrot cake but no...the taste not suitable for me. There is one few seconds walk from the Bai Long Bak Chok stall at the Penuin wet market which is not too bad tho.

If you are around Ji Long noodle shop, nearby a few hundred meters away there is also another Mickey Mouse Bak Kut Teh, i think they are as good as the one near Lucky Plaza if not better. :D

My number 1 place for noodles comes from the noodle shop near Meximo Pub and Botak Chun noodles,hehehe....so far i have brought many Singaporean there (no less than 200 people) no one says their noodles were not good. Almost all of them would choose to returned-to-eat whenever they visit Batam on their own,hehehe... :D

Come to think of it, most of which i brought there were mainly hawkers (in Singapore for few decades) and coffee shop stall owners, a big handful of them which were quite popular for the food they sells in Singapore and i am a bit surprise they give Batam food such high ratings,hehehe...

Really didnt expect you to patronize those shops in the Penuin wet market,hehehe...those were Singapore auntie and uncle's favourite spot,hehehe...perhaps i have been moving around quite a bit, but not all the things there were cheaper compared to shopping malls. I tell that to aunties and uncles but they STILL like to shop there. I think its the ambiance of the good old Chinatown or People's Park of the past that makes them feel more comfortable there.

I also saw several guys (think above 50 years old) at A2 food court lah kopi in the morning. Life is so carefree for them

Went to Batam recently after 6 years. Took the 9.40am ferry to Harbourbay Batam. Once reach, went to lv 2 Horizon counter and collect my pocket wifi. I had a problem connecting so took a taxi for 30k to City Central Hotel. Paid 40k total inc tips.

30k rupiah from Harbour Bay to anywhere Nagoya isnt really a bad thing,hehehe...comparing it with 50k to 60k over a year back. And to take Grab/GoCar, one has to walk so far out of the departure/arrival area. The price has actually comes down from average of 50k rupiah per trip to the same destination to 30k rupiah.

Even if take Go Car, price is around 14k rupiah and ultimately sometime including tipping would cost about 20k rupiah to 25k rupiah.

Ok, just to share another idea with you.

Many hotels in Batam provide 2 way shuttle service from their Hotel/s to popular Shopping Mall/s (and its free of charge)...enough said. :D

Reach hotel paid deposit 100k and got a room. The room was spacious and clean but no deposit box. I chose this hotel as it is hidden, dont like crowded place.

This hotel is actually quite good and they seems to got better over time. If anyone REALLY explore the area of this hotel, there is actually quite a handful nice MPs within its radius.

I was hungry and ordered nasi padang with GoFood. Price is 40k total which is cheap as they give generous servings, enough for 2 people.

I think 5 to 6 years ago, there is no GoFood,hehehe...so it is now actually a good thing. Practically one can eat anything within Batam as long as he/she has the GoFood apps.

The setback is, i dont speak their language hence i relied on the girls to do that for me. Also do note that some higher starred hotels do not allowed gofood to be send to their hotel rooms hence you might need to come down to the lobby to collect your food.


She wanted to watch horrow movie, so i decide to go BCS mall to watch. Bought 2 tickets for 70k. Drinks and food was expensive. 1 large popcorn, 1 medium fries and 2 Milo Dinosaur costs 230k. 3x the price of movie tickets. Milo Dinosaur in Batam is different, they have pearls in it. They dont put Milo Powder at the top but whip cream. The seats and sounds are great quality also. She was hugging and pulling me the whole time during jumpscares so i enjoyed it.

The next morning i had 1 last shot with her before she goes back. Gave her some tips, procede to breakfast downstairs. Compare to Lovina Inn Hotel next door, the breakfast was good. Got fruits, bread, porridge, rice and coffee. Went for a 2 hours clean massage for 200k near Nagoya Hill. After that eat at A&W, in Batam there is no Q at all. Took a Grab for 13k to Harbourbay and took ferry back home.

It was a memorable trip after 6 long years. Batam has improve a lot, now with Grab and Gojek around. No need to hassle with taxis for fares and can order food anywhere anytime. Be careful when booking Grab around places with taxi drivers, drivers tend to avoid to pick you up. A big shoutout to Bro Nono's useful information, refreshed my memory instantly.

Good to hear you have gotta yourself a fairly good trip. From your FR, i learned that City Central Hotel now provides good-enough breakfast and able to use Grab/GoCar. I used to cheong a lot before my recent trip. Taxi was 50k from Harbourbay and the mall there was really like ghost town because just opened. I walked until main road nego with taxi until 20k. Used to stay at Lovina Inn Nagoya, next door, behind the hotel and across the street got Booking Joints. 3 Joints within walking distance last time.

Missed the time have to ask the taxi drivers about fares. My favourite Joint last time was Permata Indah, night time eat at Windsor then go Karaoke got discount at Permata. I really admit I look so dumb. I think Formosa's Old Golden Times are so well impressed in my memory, that when you posted those old photos I thought "Ah this is my Formosa" feeling like when I was there exploring my first steps, and removing the memory of new rooms.

A bit of sharing here since some people want to put some Rupiah in Indonesian Banks to enjoy the higher rate there.

Recently, Indonesian Central Bank has reduced its interest rate. So the banks will follow by lowering interest in fix deposits also. However, with lower interest rate, there will be more borrowings and economy activities will start to pick up. The value of Rupiah will drop though because people buy less rupiah and instead borrow more rupiah to drive the economy growth. With more rupiah in the market, value of rupiah inevitably drops in the long term, unless Indonesian businesses can overcome their lackluster economic performance and start earning money into Indonesia, invest in expansion of economic activities instead of hoarding their profits in foreign currencies in offshore banks. Old habits are hard to change though.

So the expectation is a lower rupiah and a lower fix deposit rate.

But then economists have been proven wrong sometimes, and I am from the old school, dunno much about the new technological driven sharing economy. Just want to share an older person perspective. Whatsapp new money involving ASEAN cross border shared payment apps maybe a game changer to Indonesian perennial problem with dropping value in rupiah.

Recently i got attracted by an ad in an online market place selling 3 pieces of horizon one way ticket from Batam to Singapore at $20, hence i PM him asking of its 3 piece of that for S$20 but he later reply me its one piece for S$20. I then told him , "do you know that the online market place he put his ad is selling 2 way Horizon ferry tickets" at lowest S$30.50?"

After some negotiation, i manage to convince him to sell me his 3 pieces one way tickets at S$20,hehehe... :D

Yes. Average @ 2.05% the highest paid FD rate in Sillypore. And also i am protected by SDIC. So long FD dont exceed 75K....should be ok.

Fully agreed that it is too sweet which I don't like sweet stuff. Formosa is 1 of the first few hotel I stay when I went there years back which I have yet to go back again and will try it if I ever go back again. I usually stay different hotel to experience the differences.

My number 1 place for noodles comes from the noodle shop near Meximo Pub and Botak Chun

Permata Indah used to be the best booking joint for me as most if not all of the cewek there are young and have good manners and service. Can get young and nice looking cewek at average 1 to 1.2 juta per day. Mami also have good customer service...Location is good and always not so crowded... After they did the refurbishment to the rooms few years ago, most of the room at level 2 has been converted to timber floor with standing shower.

However the level 3 rooms still have plenty of carpet room with bath tub. Hopefully they don't convert all the level 3 rooms to timber floor...

Yes, there are still quite a lot of carpet room on the 3rd floor. Not all 3rd floor are converted to carpet room as yet,hehehe...i think they did read the feedback from guest like yourself.

Some of the reasons I will still opt for carpet floor room over timber floor room are:

1) After shower with wet body, standing on the carpet is not so freezing cold compared to timber floor...

2) Sense of cosiness with soft carpet feel.

3) Will not fall when standing on carpet unlike timber floor in the room tends to be slippery with wet feet

4) Cheaper to book...weekday rate 480k per night compared to timber floor room at 510k

5) Can relax at the bath tub compare to standing shower (timber floor room)

6) Brings back good old memories of Formosa in the 90s and early 2000s as it retains the original ambience of the room..

7) Rooms with carpet tends to look more premium :)

There are good and bad for carpeted flooring and i shant name them all here or it would be a super long story again,hehehe... I actually dont mind if a hotel room is carpeted or not tho (everyone's preference is different). If you read my past postings on Formosa hotel, almost once every while during my Batam trips when i stayed in Formosa, the electrical technician and the network technician would be often called in to my room to fix something in it,hehehe...and over time, i have slowly turned a few Formosa rooms into my favourite ones. I like their staff-friendliness and efficiency. I must have stayed in no less than 20 different hotels in Batam before, and Formosa is still the "best" among all in terms of overall general ratings (eg, room comfortability, staff friendliness, service efficiency, amenities, food, pricing etc).

*the word "Best" is a strong word to me, and i didnt use words like "one of the Best",hehehe...what i speak of were solely of my own perspective.

My experience in Batam started sometime in 2000 but purely for work and went there once in a blue moon which I didn't wander around much and I stopped for many years. The relationship with Batam only started end last year when a friend brought me to Nagoya shopping mall, A2 food court, the pubs around Harmoni. Since then I have went back for 4 times in this year and of course with the great advices and contribution from you guys in this forum. I must say I really appreciated all the sharing in this forum and found some like minded Bros. It makes me like Batam as much as I used to like Bangkok previously. I would say it is a hidden gem very close by to our red dot as compared to JB, BKK, Bali, Penang, KL, etc which most local like to branch out to for short trip.

It's awesome to know you guys though I have never met anyone of you and hope there is an opportunity 1 day. Keep up the great work and culture over here, cheers and enjoy Batam before we discover the next gem :)

I think is ok to have other relevant and important info beside just lobang on girls. I am a budget cheongster. If i know where and how to save on tpt, food, hotels, etc etc, i can stretch my Rupiah. Used to stay at Lovina Inn Nagoya, next door, behind the hotel and across the street got Booking Joints. 3 Joints within walking distance last time.

Next door was Queen 8933 (or used to), they turn them-self into some jackpot shop today, opposite Lovinna Inn used to be Dynasty99, they moved to beside a hotel called Lumba Lumba Inn (got to google the hotel name for map location)...

I highly doubt anyone could. Its like terms and conditions in Singapore on Fix deposit account, one of the criteria would be, "Must be Singaporean over 21 of age". Kind of sure same/similar regulation applies for Indonesia too.

I doubt so. Not sure about UOB but i think one can open an investment account in Singapore to trade foreign currency or invest in that country's currency if there is a promotion deal going on in that particular bank.

Interest rate may not be as high as in those Indonesian investing in Indonesia banks but well, definitely higher than the 2.22% on Singapore dollar.

However, a very important note is that investing in Singapore in Singapore dollar were covered under some sort of assurance up to the principle sum of S$75k and that applies to Indonesia on Indonesia bank up to 2 billion rupiah (if i did not remember wrong) with some T&C. BUT, they are not covered for foreign currency, eg. Investing rupiah in Singapore bank and/or Singapore dollar on Indonesia Bank.

i have other plans tho,if my choice were to invest in Rupiah on Singapore bank and/or be investing Rupiah in Indonesia bank.

Theres a catch at MBB. If not mistaken every 10K u need to dep 1K in ur saving account. And saving account gave u board rate which is peesai. So u place 50K in FD u also need to dep 5K in ur savings account and u cant withdraw it till ur FD mature.

Yes, thats the 2.22% package and the least i expected their offers only last about a week only. I am guess, they had probably met their quota, hence took that package down.

Their current 2.1% is the same, but it eventually can only be added to less than 2%.

Yes you are rite, therefore although it is stated as 2.22% per annum but the fix deposit rate including taking into account the amount placed in the saving account with low interest rate,average out everything is actually about 2.05%.

But one good unique thing about Maybank is that it pay the customer upfront the interest on the next working day instead of wait one year later for a 12 month fix deposit. The interest obtained early can then be invested in other investments.

Maybank so far has the highest fix deposit interest rates.

I thought i was lucky to catch the OCBC's structured deposit last year at 2.05% (2% for 1st 3 years and 2.05% for next 3) and earlier this part of 2019 of the 2.1% one,whereby my money would be held for a full 6 years in each deal.

All in all, i think the Maybank's 2.22% is still the best deal. Since my money will only be held for a mild one year. Next year today, i will have a little bit more money to spend in Batam,hehehe... :D

My 40 Batam trip summaries (http://bit.do/eAatc)has told me that too. Imagine, 6 odd years ago exchange rates was somewhere around 8700/SGD (plus minus that), this year the exchange rate was around 10400/SGD. Close to 20% drops,hehehe...and what happens after another 6 years? :D

Then again, the rental for Nagoya Mansion studio apartment didnt go up a dime from 6 years ago too (Nagoya Mansion is only stated here as an example). As a matter of fact, it went down a little. So if can keep enough spare rupiah in fix deposit to regulate enough interest to feed the rental...its not exactly a bad idea. But i will have to know that my 100 million rupiah (which is about S$11 494, base on 8700/SGD) i fixed 6 years ago will turn into about S$9615 base on 10400/SGD on 2019.

So now, beside just buying an apartment in Batam, i have another option. Nothing's really concrete as yet tho as i am still looking out for option/s, preferably safer, sounder and in hope it would leads to some win-win sustainability for myself. ;)

Fully agreed that it is too sweet which I don't like sweet stuff. Formosa is 1 of the first few hotel I stay when I went there years back which I have yet to go back again and will try it if I ever go back again. I usually stay different hotel to experience the differences.

I switch hotels too, but mainly to turn see if they have the potential to become yet another Formosa in terms of good location, friendliness, efficient service level and good pricing for their in house service (eg Massage, KTV, Restaurants etc).

If you read my past postings on Formosa hotel, almost once every while during my Batam trips when i stayed in Formosa, the electrical technician and the network technician would be often called in to my room to fix something in it,hehehe...and over time, i have slowly turned a few Formosa rooms into my favourite ones. I like their staff-friendliness and efficiency. .

I believe with more hotel guest like you, Formosa rooms quality standard will eventually improve greatly....a more comfortable environment to stay without defects..:D

5. Bad experience, they shared, they got hammered down, hence they dont share anymore (or shared lesser). Usually i categorize them under #2.

6. They dont know how to,hehehe...some are shy, not good with words. This category can PM me instead,hehehe...

There are many leeway to share today, well those who shares most time hope for a better next Batam trip and they usually get what they hope for (unless Batam is really not suitable for them).

I wish to elaborate one VERY important key point here. By sharing, readers know you and hence created an understanding. Sad to say, after some investigation, and to my surprise about 80% of them were not clones. However, they have few things in common, most of them uses the same VPN or VPNs sharing similar platform. This is called recycled IP address from its VPN's country's repective ISP.

In other word, you and me are 2 different person, if we are using VPNs, its only a matter of time one day we will be caught with the same ip address BUT definitely on a different date and time. As mentioned on page post #1 of this thread :

Before my reply to any post, i would usually check back his/her past postings. I rarely reply to anyone who has never shared before,let alone getting any more in depth information from me. One example would be bro Funboi's postings. He may not have shared any information of value in this thread, but i still reply him. A friend stayed at Lumba Lumba which bro Nono introduced recently. Hotel, Ferry package plus 1 hour Massage for twin sharing @$55 per pax. Single @$67. He shared that there is a promotion at Chinatown Point every few months and of course there are several pubs around it since it is near Harmoni.

This hotel isnt exactly shared by me but by someone who PM-ed me.Base on his description, its not exactly my kind of hotel since no in-house restaurant, no in-house massage, no KTV inside the hotel. And single person is S$67 (promo price base on package i guess) for a 2 star hotel? Hehehe...unless one enjoys nightlife in Batam, then i think they might like it.

The good i see so far is, its beside Dynasty99 and 2 mins walk to Memory KTV. 3 overnight booking within its premises if i include New berry aka Sekar just about 5 to 8 mins walk. Other than that...its probably not suitable for me in just too many ways.

My experience in Batam started sometime in 2000 but purely for work and went there once in a blue moon which I didn't wander around much and I stopped for many years. The relationship with Batam only started end last year when a friend brought me to Nagoya shopping mall, A2 food court, the pubs around Harmoni. Since then I have went back for 4 times in this year and of course with the great advices and contribution from you guys in this forum. I must say I really appreciated all the sharing in this forum and found some like minded Bros. It makes me like Batam as much as I used to like Bangkok previously. I would say it is a hidden gem very close by to our red dot as compared to JB, BKK, Bali, Penang, KL, etc which most local like to branch out to for short trip.

They were not wrong tho, i mean since my questions back then was pretty much basics and was categorize under the FAQ,hehehe...if i didnt remember wrong, i read 1800 pages of the old thread 4 times (patience..).

After being in old Batam thread for a little bit longer, i assume the more experienced Batam travelers in the thread likes to :

1. Refer newbie to page one of a thread (to read 1st before asking questions)
2. Didnt really likes reply to repeated same old questions
3. A handful would pin down anyone who ask a question that has been asked before

Having the chance to travel to Batam once a month back then, i committed myself to write 1 Batam trip summary a month for the purpose of recording my own trip adventure, and they eventually piled up to 40, over a period of around 3.5 years. Must have earned some level of trust from some oldbies, and probably the moderating team of the forum too. I got to start a new thread (best part is, i even got to talk to the old TS in the old Batam thread too).

1st thing that comes to mind is not to be drifted away too much from the old Batam thread, followed by the considering what the oldbie/s "do not like to do" and at the same time can help newbie/s move forward to have the trip they desire. My number 1 objective is still to gather Batam Information as mentioned in page 1 of this thread but i need to put all oldbies,newbies
AND my thread objective/s all in one place...sort of like, to help them co-exist together.

I begin to pick up all the pieces of basic from the old thread (note : i have to read more than 2000 pages of old thread and repeat read again several times in the old thread), my own experience and back then in my mentality as a newbie to write the Basic Batam travelling guide (https://sbf.net.nz/showpost.php?p=15775175&postcount=6277). Well, it takes one to be in a newbie's shoe to understand how a newbie think, right? I put it all in page one of this thread,hehehe...and the oldbie/s can easily direct them to the page ONE of the new Batam thread like what they have previously do so in the old thread.

Its a one stone kill 2 birds strategy. The oldbie/s no need to repeatedly answer same question/s over and over again. The newbie/s gets enough information to get them started. Nowaday (today), if you havent already noticed, the Questions and Answering trend in the thread has change. There are still people (probably some lazy newbie/s) who ask newbie question. I cant stop that part since this is a public forum. The good thing is, at most time no one reply...hehehe...the newbies could blame all they wanted to, but we all knows who is really at fault here. ;)

Then comes the information compilation part, which is one of my main objective in this thread,hehehe....and in case no one here realize, ONLY (or mainly) those who are new to the thread who has wrote an FR on Batam, actually get more replies. When this discussion steps in, i could gather more information and compile them together. So it become a win-win situation for the oldbies,the newbies and finally myself,hehehe...

So if you are new and ask a FAQ here, you mainly see 5 results :

a) you get dump aside,nobody hack care you or reply you

b) you get a link to read,starting with page ONE

c) you get a link from one of my past more-detailed reply to someone who asked the same question

d) you get a brief non-detailed reply from someone who is kind enough

e) you got a clone talking to himself

I mean thats my observation so far. I observe forum user's behaviors, starting with the old Batam thread before i started this one, under the Forum staff/s permission. I have to make sure in the beginning of this thread, the foundation is strong enough.

Most who followed this thread actually knows what i wrote above were repeated stuffs (sorry about that...), but i rewrite them here again few years later for a reason. More like a reminder (to myself and readers) ,to make sure one of my key objective when i 1st started didnt stray off. And as well as allowing those who followed the thread to know what i have said in the past and what i have said today...still didnt change.

Exactly the same expectation i have for the island, Batam today,...consistency.

Everyone have their own privacy or selfishness. I have my own "evaluation SOP" to determine if certain info can or safe or should be release. There are some cases I intentionally planned or purposely released the info. Where the contents shared is of genuine n private, I often paint the picture with hidden codes or missing pieces.

Which is why i use this thread to compile information, at the same time observe user/s behavior and i treat it like a learning thread for myself. I went more in depth into Batam's cheong scene by observing the Batam girl's, as well as the OKT/s and the market behavior in order to seek what i looked for.

I really really miss the KTV's in changping from a while ago, so I thought I would go the ktv here in batam. I am on my last day now here in batam, and I have been to 2 ktv here: Alishan, and M2. The cost for the whole night including tax and service fees and everything (except any tip) came out to roughly 1 mil for both places per night.
Initially I was extremely skeptical about the pricing, and had it explained to me countless times before I went in, as I thought that they would try to rip me off and the end price would be super high.
But no, I am extremely satisfied with the price I was charged and paid, and would easily do it again.
When I get around to writing a report I will elaborate more.
Going to get some breakfast now, and start packing up to catch the ferry to JB in a few hours.

I think it would be mainly for the 1st pick up, the rest of the day (8 to 12 hours of the day) would be base on mobile phone calls,i guess. Hence it can safely avoid those mafia taxi touts.

Actually i dont totally blame those mafia taxi touts, the tourist or those using the online taxi apps were partly to blame too. They know they will get threatened or be getting into trouble with mafia taxi touts if they order taxi online in Indonesia. Ordering a taxi online is actually very simple. Grab a taxi, remember their car number, their car model/color, keep phone inside pocket and wait for the taxi. Hehehe...for me i would light a cigarette walk around to wait. By almost the end of my smoke, my taxi arrived. There is no need to keep holding my phone to see/track where the driver is (even if driver cancel my order, can always get another one in another 10 mins time).

Complicated? Yes, mainly for tourists (I think) who lacks common sense.

Probably I was lucky most of the times to manage to book good attitude girls in this joint. This I would like to thank the mami for allowing me to chat with the cewek before I booked her so in this way can more or less find out whether she got princess attitude or not.

Its more like i have been staying there for quite a bit of time, i simply fine tune what fits me best. Again, being a long time customer there, my expectation becomes higher and that leads to being fussy (its actually very fussy).

When i apply my expectation level from Formosa to other hotels in Batam,hmm...many hotel's overall quality simply couldnt even come close to it. Hence i have to be bringing myself down to the level during the 1st few times about 5 years ago where i start visiting Batam. Held on to those lower expectation to stay in so that i can be a more fairer to the other Batam hotels. From thereon, i start building few more "FormosaS". :p

By the way, now there's no need to wash my Batam room's curtain recently, becos they just swapped it with a brand new non-black-out curtain which is thinner, so that they can wash it more frequently on their own. :(

My last week trip to batam, I tried to book grab from hotel Swiss Inn, surprisingly, they pick us up and drop us at octupuss. From Octupuss to HBB seafood also ok. But the problem is from Harbourbay back to Swiss Inn cannot. The grab driver dont dare to pick us up because its near harbour so no choice take the mafia taxi LOL
Its very cheap to take grab in batam. SO cheap that its unbelievable. 13k to 16k only each trip. I normally give 20k then no take any change. 20k = SGD$2

The new Grand Batam Mall was beautiful but not all the shops were open yet. I tried out the CGV Velvet Suite and watched Spider-Man. It was awesome to lie down on a mattress and watch a movie. If one has a spare sim card slot on his/her mobile phone, this is just another option to have some data to go around with in Batam and best part is, it cost only 50k rupiah.

A friend of mine tries it, and in terms of reliability-wise, hmm...still not as good as my telkomsel sim card which i buy, use and throw....then again, the telkomsel sim card cost me 100k rupiah (6GB data for a month) comparing it with my friend's 50k rupiah sim card with 1.5 GB for the mere 3 days.

From my perspective, S$7 per day with unlimited data for the portable Wifi from the Horizon Ferry, the 50k rupiah sim card for 3 days with 1.5 GB data and my own idea of Telkomsel sim card with 6GB data (and 15mins talk time) at 100k rupiah. I still prefer the 100k rupiah sim card.

I own a M1 pre-paid sim card in Singapore, i tried using the data package (S$5) from there before and in terms of reliability, i still prefer buying the Telkomsel sim card to insert into my mobile phone spare sim card slot or into my own USB portable wifi device.

The only issue i have with Telkomsel sim card is mainly around Grand Batam Mall's basement so far whereby the connection would be cut-off.

Note : The word reliability here means when i need to use data, the device isnt working well as i would have expected it to.

If not wrong, even Blue Bird an Silver Cab which are operating by meter werent allowed in similar designated area ,like those that of online taxis (Grab or Go Car) in Batam. I can understand the plight of the Blue Bird and Silver becos Blue Bird taxi is in blue and Silver cab is Silver in colour. The obvious colors tell them apart. But Grab taxis and GoCar looks just like those touting taxis hence they gotta the upperhand, hehehe...

Book round trip ferry ticket to HarbourBay from Horizon via online booking as recommended by bro Nono's guide.
After arrival, went to the taxi stand to get a taxi to Fame Spa.
There is a guy at the taxi stand who will help to call taxi to the taxi stand to pick up. Taxi fare is 30k flat as stated on the taxistand signboard.

From Harbourbay to Fame Spa ~10min ride

Price at Fame Spa is definitely not cheap, it has went up significantly compared to 2018.

Swiss Bel isnt the only hotel inside Harbour Bay that offer shuttle services, next Batam trip i am going to try asking other hotels within Harbour Bay to pick me up,hehehe...sound stupid tho ,since location from Harbour Bay Ferry terminal and hotels within Harbour Bay is so very close by. But i am bringing aunties and uncles who cant walk long distance (even tho its just 10 mins walk).

Pick up/drop off is free,hopefully. So thought i would test out before writing on this again on a later time.

went on a day trip to Batam.
Book round trip ferry ticket to HarbourBay from Horizon via online booking as recommended by bro Nono's guide.
After arrival, went to the taxi stand to get a taxi to Fame Spa.
There is a guy at the taxi stand who will help to call taxi to the taxi stand to pick up. Taxi fare is 30k flat as stated on the taxistand signboard.

Hehehe...thank the many who complained to Harbour Bay about taxi overcharging over above 30k rupiah over the last few months.

They were the ones planting the trees so that those behind can use the tree's shade to cool themselves.

On my own, i prefer New Spa at Batam City Hotel...hehehe...as most of the girls came from Delta Spa. But service quality i hear has declined tremendously over the last 6 months. However, i have turned to clean massage shops to seek for special service recently,hehehe...:D

Thank you for the price update, even tho there are no changes. This place is almost in the middle of no where to me. The only landmark i could use is Blue Star Hotel, which has closed down.

Tho it might have closed, but many taxi drivers would know the hotel. And its just less than 5 mins walk from there.

Note: massage is done in the deluxe room, body scrub is done at a different location, a small cubicle outside the building, near the swimming pool and private villa (VIP room). there is only a bed in the center, pipe with shower head, a big pail and scoop at the body scrub place.

Sometime, i truly wish this spa could turned itself into a Hotel. I wouldnt mind staying over in such environment for a night tho,hehehe...

Note: the deluxe combo massage price does not include the massage oil. the staff did not explain this to me and i was charge +35k for the oil... and the oil was a very small bottle, not enough for the whole massage. after the oil finished, the girl change to a body lotion (unknown brand but it's the kind that u can get from Watson)

Your incident reminds me of Delta Spa's hard selling,hehehe...not a good sign. Often makes me feel as if i am in Yun Nam hair salon in Singapore whereby the therapist would try to up sell you more things/packages. :(

Note: during body scrub, u will lie down on your belly, the girl wears a kind of "scrub glove" and will scrub you. once done with the back, flip body to the front, repeat scrubbing.
so it's something like this: scrub back > flip > scrub front > add shower foam > scrub front+rinse > flip > add shower foam > scrub back+rinse > massage back > flip > wash hair > facial treatment > massage front > rinse > done. the massage this time round is much decent compared to before.
Note: for facial treatment, it's just the girl use Nivea facial cleanser wash your face, after washing, she will apply what i assume is their homemade cucumber mask.. with the cucumber mask on, she will continue to clean/massage after that a final rinse. no GQ this time round.

Saw the Korean language in the menu, so i guess there should be quite a handful Korean regulars there,hehehe...tells me another story from this.

There maybe some Korean who bring their business partners or colleague there to kill time.

Octopuss is just round the corner (Pacific Palace hotel), within view after you walked out of Harbour Bay ferry terminal. It can be a good choice, since the taxi driver says so. Next time, try it out and make comparison. You will eventually know what best suits you most.
