Fishing 101.

Don’t force my hand, I will surely give you more than substance. Be careful what you ask for, you will surely get it. If you want fish, you get fishes. If you want fish you got to eat, sleep, dream fish. In other words, begin with the end in the mind. One of my trip I was minding my own business, after picking up a ‘re-print’ book( from a underaged sweet nothing street vendor who tot I love to read), settle down in a resto and have a cup of coffee. There I begin my fishing. ( going for my massage now, later I continue my ‘substance’

You book your trip and you are looking forward to D-Day. The very least you can do is to buy a pack of condom right. Fishing is the same, while you only need a hook line and sinker, a trip to your local bait & tackle shop. My favourite is at gina’s in Changi village because she always give me the half balls. Strong swivel, owner’s hooks, fire line etc.

Planing is pretty important in IMHO. You don’t want to be caught with your pants down, pun intended. For example, know what and where you are fishing. You are bottom fishing, drift fishing, you need to know the size of your sinker. The poundage of your main line, the right leader, some langons etc. Add some taman hooks so you can want to pick up some live baits. If you can prep your stuff, include some sets of Apollo hooks as well. By now you should have caught my drift

Outlook determines Outcome

At the right right of sounding long winded , I like to ask that if you are a fishing newbie, stop being a prick. Sometimes these fishing enthusiasts are simply a pain in ass. They throw tantrums when they don’t find their expensive pliers or something. They go ballistic when they lose a fish etc.

So you have book a fishing boat for 5 or 6. You settle down for catch. Maybe your deck hand is helpful. He tied your line, help you retrieve your catch. A good deckie is important. He is your local guide, he can bring you to the fishing spots just by triangulating the spots from known islands in distant.

hard to get below 140 nowadays, like cartel like tht, all price between 160 to 200 ( with all the additional ).

bro, btw, vietnam any good place for offshore fishing?

i tried con dao, went out awhile only, cos my girl got sea sick.

phu quoc, tried for a few hours in the evening, also zero.

nha trang, bring rod there, but end up didnt fish, island hop instead.

its hard to communicate to them our expectation of fishing... haha. small little 1 kg is gonna be a waste of time.

as for fresh water, i tried one pond at bien hoa, also small little fishes .. wtf.

any good pond in ( nearby ) HCM. least a few kg fight, catch n release ok. Left a few rods in HCM, still yet to find time place to try.

i regular there, but i not really into chiong places, cos i never really go chiong in hcm.. hahaha.. so what i go there monthly or bimonthly, or go there 100 of times. i still so noob n green as u all first timer... haha

if u wana buy some north face jacket or under armour jacket, i can tell u where to go,

if u wana go eat some dim sum, i can tell u where to go. but being first time there, u better off try the local food. I go there so often or u invite local ppl, its a nice change not to eat local. hahaha. I think it is an exciting time to fish in HCMC. Go to the back alley and explore every nook and cranny of this old city. It is one that is juxtaposed by the new city. I went to the Saigon, and saw country pumpkins shitting in plain sight in the bushes in plain sight along the boulevards. Decades later, the new city has evolved into a vibrate metropolitan wannabe. You go in now, peel the layers from the city and tell us what you are made of, or what the place is made of

When I just started travelling for work in 1990 it was really interesting (& sometimes downright foolish :o ) to go around all the unknown ulu ulu areas all over Asia to cheong as that time you cant find any information as the internet was still in its infancy stage, the company I worked for dont even have an email address for us and everybody had to share a common workstation to access the internet thru the administrator's watchful eye :cool:

Well no right or wrong here but by all means go for it if anybody is adventurous enough & as what our fishy friend have said above, please come back with a story or some stories to tell here :D

I'm not a freshwater pond enthusiast as no surprises in ponds as you know what fishes is coming up ;) but there is 1 good productive one at district 8 (79 Ta Quang Buu, Ward 4) with 2 very big ponds & you can bring back what you catch :cool:

I have already been asking around for local deep sea charters all around Wetnam for quite some time so you would be sorely disappointed if you bring your baitcasters along :D

But please do let me know if you do manage to find one, we can go on an exploratory trip ;)

the few boats that i went up, they are more for sightseeing/ tourist to make extra bucks. They are definately not cater to sport fishing. But the charter is actually quite cheap. between 80 - 120 sing. so no complain loh, take it as sightseeing trip. :D

Was baiting for fellow fisho and bagged 2. I like going to Gina’s, they know how to service my shimano reels. She was also my customer so I would get my nasi lemak fix when she called to replenish stocks. I like Changi Village for its institutions like Charlie’s Corner. The people, th place is unpretentious

Most of the fishes are those freshwater catfishes but quite sizeable as I have seen them brought up those 5kgs & above ;) not a very good eating fish tho.....:cool:

Dont think its even possible, cause most VBs get seasick or even carsick easily unless its those from native fishing villages :cool:

Anyway I dont mix Fishing with the other one that also starts with F, cos I can only concentrate on one at a time :D

Yup the place still have its old world charms, but getting more commercialised in no time too.....:cool:

Gone were the days where all the tackle shops were congregated at Beach road and you can practically spend the whole afternoon there just browsing & replenishing (even tho it doesnt really needs replenishing but who can resists.....:o) your tackles :D

Even if you can find a boat willing to take you out, you will have problems mounting your rods as most of them dont even have a proper rod holder. & I dont really fancy holding on to the rod whole trip....:cool:

The Asian catfish or pangasius has masqueraded as many fishes. The Vietnamese catfish is farmed in the worse condition ever. So don’t buy fillets if they are labeled like Sutchi or basa. Not only is it not a good eating fish, eating it will give bad health or papaya breasts

thn hor, we all sport fisherman will go find their fad, sneakily fish those small bait fish from fad. also surrounding fad for bigger fish. . .haha

mayb u all need to chip in to open a ktv . . . hahahahaa .. . or any girl related fad. . . in order to hv a steady supply of fishes :D

Fishing 103 - Rawai

Rawai or long line fishing is pretty straight forward: you have 100 to 1,000 hooks, along a longline. You can catch anything and everything, sometimes even a mermaid will get hooked. Longlining is a time tested method and it is sometimes compared to a gill net fishing

Fishing 104 - Bubu

Fish traps are easy and cheap to make. On the seabed either find natural rock formations or dive in to create a space for your fish trap to make it look like a natural home. Coral trouts love to hide among the rocks. Leave the bubu in the waters for a few days and come back to retrieve them using a grappling hook. If the fishes are juveniles, use a Vitagen straw n poke the air bladder from the fish asshole to keep the fish alive. These can be kept in a keep net till they grow to market size. It sounds a lot like grooming but that is another topic. Bubu allows us to sample the variety in the local waters, bait fish also can be used for your hook n line fishing

Haha slight amendment here, they normally tie a marked floater to the surface as kinda difficult to locate them once its in the water even with a GPS so they can pull it up using the tied rope ,problem is those ulu locations the fishes tends to get stolen if it is not cleared frequently or even the whole bubu gone :cool:

Vitagen straw thru the asshole?????:eek: actually goot idea rather than poking the bladder directly as most people do:D

The Asian catfish or pangasius has masqueraded as many fishes. The Vietnamese catfish is farmed in the worse condition ever. So don’t buy fillets if they are labeled like Sutchi or basa. Not only is it not a good eating fish, eating it will give bad health or papaya breasts

thn hor, we all sport fisherman will go find their fad, sneakily fish those small bait fish from fad. also surrounding fad for bigger fish. . .haha

mayb u all need to chip in to open a ktv . . . hahahahaa .. . or any girl related fad. . . in order to hv a steady supply of fishes :D

They can only find their FAD without a GPS if it is located near the shore or still within viewing distance of land, once out of viewing distance of any land no way they can find it without a GPS liao cos no landmarks for them to judge the locations :D

Yup same here I have tried all their fishing & squidding tours all over Wetnam but its more catered towards those amusement parks kind of enjoyment as those reef fishes that we are bringing up are even smaller than the baits that I normally use.....:D

I am impressed by your knowledge and how wise you are in applying it to mermaiding. Give me time to collect my thoughts to do a proper set up to Fishing 200 series. Fishing is such an interesting topic but you can reduced it to one jerk at the end of the line with another jerk on the other end of the line.

I want to share a story of ice fishing:

The writer stopped his car one day after seeing a man in the middle of the lake. Curious, he approached the winter fisherman with fear and tripidation. Suddenly he heard the ice cracked beneath his weight and he slowly moved back to the edge of the lake. He called out to the fisherman who was all warmed up in fleece in frigid weather. Fishing 200:Coastal Stilt house

I used to have a hut in the sea. It has a broadwalk entending to the drop off. I included a fishing platform with keep nets underneath. With this set up I have a roof over my head and fish day and night, come high water or calm. I have a dingy with a puny outboard motor that can take me to fishing spots. I also charter fishing boats to go further into the sea.

A permanent anchored structure is a good way to explore the green water. The green water is near shore just before the deeper water divide coloured blue. Since the fishing platform sits at the edge of the drop off, fishing is very decent. I love to snorkel and eat sea urchin. You can pick up spider conchs, scallops and othert type of sea snails. During Low tide you can gather many food in the intertidal pools. If you set your nets during the monsoon period, you will have no lack of food.

With such a set up, you can begin your hunter gatherer poise. If you are going to impress your girl, just dingy to your neighbour who is catching lobsters. If you want to teach her fishing 101, you can do it up close and personal. One of the best mermaiding can be done on the Kelong. But those were the days of youthful debauchery. Of throwing cautions to the wind. Of stealing quickies. Of banging any members of the fairer sex. Eating kampong chicken like no tomorrow. Now older, none wiser I take on a different tempo when it comes to fishing. More patience more deliberate more ..discerning

Was otw back spore, we fish near those uj. All up chermin/ ebek. I alone fight at least 5 alr. They are not those Small chermin; all at least 3 to 10 kgs. The much bigger one, shiny golden colors. Damn shiok.

Those will be Ebeks as Chermins seldom grow to so large sizes, the bigger Ebeks tends to turn yellow around the mouth already and the meat are also quite tough, the biggest I ever caught was a 13.2kg specimen at Pekan :cool:

Monday was at long beach, waitress vietnamese

Last friday at woodland ave 6 kopi thiam. Kopi counter also viet girl.

Last week went taiseng kopi thiam there. New stall sell viet food. All viet

They speak mandarin or english can tell easily. :D

Thank you so much. Appreciate your kind understanding especially when we know I am bullshiting. Describing fishing when am actually talking about dry fishing. I also enjoy jigging with a rubber but my other passion is diving n snorkeling. After all, am like a fish in the water. Will become a kid when I see a school of trevallies moving like hondas on the street of HCMC. Being in the water allows me to find my soul.

I am now spending my fallow in pinoy land dry fishing, while trying to find some good dive spots. Happy fishing bro in Wetnam and again, tank q for putting up with my indulgence

I think not those long term/ dependent pass. Its work permit. . .especially in f&b restaurant. I think sg gov allow permit holder frm vn.

Those ktv ones are usually wp spass for artist, some 'fake' dependent/ long term pass and of cos the normal 30days social/ tourist

Now this is interesting, normally anglers & divers have opposite views as to fish conservation & preservation ;) anglers on one-hand especially in Asia would definitely tapao that prized Gao-Tun while the divers will want to enjoy feeding it with fishes with their bare hands, unless you are a Hybrid aka spear fisherman???:eek:

You can employ foreign workers from these countries or regions:

Malaysia
People’s Republic of China (PRC)

North Asian sources (NAS):
Hong Kong (HKSAR passport)
Macau
South Korea
Taiwan

My company tried to recruit engineering staff from Wetnam previously and faced tons of problems from MOM as they are not considered to be from the so-called "traditional" approved sources unless you intend to put them as Employment Pass holders (with high salary scale) :eek:

Those KTVs ones are different as they are employed under performing artistes permit and falls under a different category as they can be sourced from many countries instead :cool:

I got zero. Nothing big from others too. Those 6 inches fresh water fish. Dunno wht, Something not in our local pond fishing. Haha

I use prawn n fish meat.

This place in Bien hoa. Towards long khanh. Turn here there from main road. U ask me find the place I also lost. Kana motor there. Haha.

Viet bu motor skill not bad. Haha.. They usually 40+ kg 1.5+m can fetch me.. Haha.

Last time got catch n release GT. If use light tackle better fight. If fill up ice box then mix of Taiwan gnor, mangrove jack, KBL and other type of snappers. The groupers damn lazy, got to troll around the side of the pond early morning n evening. But usually the highlight is the ringing of the bell to park the line near the keep nets.

Since the author had already included all the diacritics in the words, just convert those short forms to proper vietnamese (e.g. ko to khong, trc to truoc...ETC) and you should be able to just cut and paste onto an online translator ;)

On average the difference between airpork $$ changers & town is about + 200 to 400vnd per SGD, next time if you are in town just change some spare VND to tahan such short stopovers then you dont lugi too much cos change at the airpork bo hua ;)

Most of those 1 shop type spas around D1 Ben Thanh are relatively quite clean with no specials (but if you do managed to really score in such joints pls do share back ;)), look for those bigger spas & massage in hotels with facilities like sauna and you will have a higher chance of getting some specials ;)

Just dont step into that 2 well-known touristy massage joints can liao (search the HCM thread, the whole world is going there :cool:), the rest are still considered quite reasonable in their rates and also equivalent to those shops spa you see in D1....;)

Never go with those moto-pimps unless you are in a group (for safety) but if you do it can be quite interesting, I went twice out of curiosity and they will bring you to a small little hotel in one of the damn small side-streets (they called it Hem) and then they will parade those FLs in front of you until you choose one :cool:

Ya once the banks concert to another foreign currency from their own, the rates are damn bad cos they will need to earn from it...:cool:

If 17000+ then still not that bad & not too far off from money changers, currently the $$ changers in town on average is about 17100 vnd, some will be more & some lesser as usual (caveat in advance) ;)

I am sure you are not knowing what you talking here...any Vietnam bank will convert foreign currencies to VND using their daily exchange rates or a rate given to priority banking customers....there will be no circumstances the Vietnam bank will have SGD account...USD bank account possible...:)

Anyway regardless of personal or business the TT fees still apply so just stating as a matter of fact as I do not really knows what our "lanpa bro" is engaging in Wetnam ;)

Last time when I was working in Wetnam I will never ever mix any of my personal banking accts with business related transactions/accts, which in fact I insisted on separate accounts, which IMHO would be wiser so as not to be caught with allegations of money mules or laundering since the amounts will tends to be much bigger when it comes to business, the only exception may be with businessmen themselves that are running their own businesses but it is still good proper governance to have separate accounts for easy financial accountability :cool:

I concur but I would apply it on a much wider scale as everything we know now tends to be obsolete later, whether it was 10 years ago or only yesterday as events nowadays are very dynamic & ever-changing, thats why sometimes I find it somewhat amusing to see forummners arguing whom is right or wrong about cheong jionts or charges...ETC :cool:

There were quite a number of times posted previously in the old HCM threads that some cheongsters wanted to save costs and stayed in those ulu ulu districts, but specially took taxi all the way to Ben Thanh just becos the rates there are slightly better :eek: factor in the taxi costs already cost more than the so-called better rates liao unless they already wanted to tour around D1 at the same time but then this negates their original intentions to save costs by staying out of D1 :D

Yup you can but check out the restrictions first before committing yourself, I would advise going to those foreign owned banks as they allow multiple currencies account instead of just USD & VND ;)

I usually stay 1 or 2 places, either right smack near D10 or Go Vap (for free) or at D1. I travel light so I normally walk over to the domestic terminal and get a grab bike to where I want to go.

Taxi from TSN to D1 should run 250 to 300k depending if they want to rip you off. Expensive? Maybe relatively speaking but well worth it if you want to escape the rain and heat.

Why would anyone stay at ulu ulu place to save cost is beyond me. It's not like hotels or Airbnb are expensive at D1. Plenty of decent places for USD20/night near Ben Thanh.

I am not doubting the amounts your frens change as it is up to you to state whichever amount you want since nobody else here can substantiate your claims, but kindly please do not exaggerate the amounts to win arguments as for most visitors to Wetnam will not change SGD20K to SGD30K on a monthly basis especially if they are only there to cheong ;)

Moreover the businessmen type may only comprises less than 1% of the total number of tourists per month so on average most visitors or tourists may only change about SGD500 to 1K just enough for a few days trip, the key word is "on average" and not specific to anybody at all :cool:

For those with priority, apec etc. U see more than 30 ppl at express immigration. Dont queue there. Go to normal lane. Faster.

Why would anyone stay at ulu ulu place to save cost is beyond me. It's not like hotels or Airbnb are expensive at D1. Plenty of decent places for USD20/night near Ben Thanh.

Good observation ;) its just general crowd mentality as most people will just labelled tourist popular areas as generally more expensive than those less traveled areas instead of actually finding out themselves, nothing really wrong in this as everybody is entitled to their own personal opinions :cool:

since is public holiday and many seniors will not be login...b4 I replied I need to google Leo ktv becos I hv no idea...then after understanding Leo ktv...now can reply...:)

catwalk is the top most expensive ktv in hcm...playability - 3/10...the gals well dressed well endowed tip top but will try to avoid been kissed, etc...heard the sitting applied by hours...not sure but heard 700k dong...:)

Dmax will be more ideal place for you...playbility - 7/10...gals also chio...:)

playability - my ratings really depends on individual becos up to you if you wanna play...example - strip her naked...take off panties, etc...:)

there are plenty of local ktv/bia om in D5 and most have about 20 to 50 gals and playability - 8/10...cost lower and gals may not dress well or powder like dolls but there are gems to be find...:)

Dmax - sitting fee - 500k dong
many local ktv - sitting fee 300 to 500k
ST - 1.5 mil to 3mil
LT - 3mil to 6mil

From my experience, it's just so much better to register your grab with a vn number.

They will call and you just tell them where to pick you up. Of course, goes without saying being able to handle basic tieng viet helps.

To me Catwalk is expensive even by Sinkie standards and as with most KTVs in Wetnam the playability can never be compared with Sinkie as they are much more fiercer here ;)

I always use this trick to prevent them from calling me to verify as mine is registered with my Sinkie number (expensive IDD calls :eek:), I will use the in-app messenger to text them the pick-up place immediately upon confirmation and 99% of the time they will reply OK with no calls :D
