The reason is simply becos your analogy is incorrect as both are never fully equated.....i.e. nobody visits a country just simply becos the customs is nice and vice-versa nobody stops visiting a country just simply the customs are fark-tup ;) this is what mindset index is all about ^_^

Thats the thing, most of us started travelling around South East Asia for work very long time ago especially all the asian countries like Wetnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia (with the exception of Laos as really nothing to do biz there also at that time ).

I was travelling to Wetnam in 1990-1993 as were helping my company at that time to set-up their regional offices concurrently with Bangkok too ;) at that time was a green blur fark with private-limited financial capability to cheong so much (now still blur like fark just that at least not so green liao) :D

It is only with the advent of budget airlines in the last 15 years or so that most of us were able to travel so frequently for fun/cheonging, or else how to afford with that kind of crazy ticket prices e.g. S$ 800++ just for HCM ticket in early nineties :o

The mosque at Dong Du street used to serve curry rice at their kitchen and everyone is welcome to eat there. Need to pay. Was there with some friends recently and when we started walking in, all the Muslims folks was staring at us wondering what 4 Chinese guys is doing going into the mosque. In the hands of the gods: Vietnam's Golden Bridge goes viral

By AFP August 2, 2018 | 08:04 am GMT+7

Nestled in the forested hills of central Vietnam two giant concrete hands emerge from the trees, holding up a bridge.

The glimmering golden bridge has been crowded with gleeful visitors taking selfies at the country's latest eccentric tourist draw.

Designed to make visitors feel like they're taking a stroll on a shimmering thread stretching across the hands of gods, the "Golden Bridge" has attracted hordes of guests since it opened in the Ba Na Hills near Da Nang in June.

Images of the bridge have gone viral on social media, much to the surprise of the architect who had no idea it would attract so much attention.

"We're proud that our product has been shared by people all over the world," principal designer and founder of TA Landscape Architecture, Vu Viet Anh, told AFP.

At 150 meters long (490 feet), the bridge snakes through the forest high up in mountains first developed by French colonists as a hill station in 1919.

Today the area is a major tourist attraction, boasting a cable car, replica French medieval village - including faux castle and cathedral - manicured gardens and a wax museum featuring statues of Lady Gaga and Michael Jordan.

The only remnants of the original French occupants are the crumbling remains of their holiday homes that can still be spotted from the cable car.

But visitors are mostly interested in the newly built Cau Vang, which means "Golden Bridge" in Vietnamese.

"The bridge is beautiful with an amazing architectural style, from here we can see Da Nang City, it's so nice," Nguyen Trung Phuc told AFP.

Another visitor, Nguyen Hien Trang, said: "I have travelled quite a lot but I've never seen any bridges as beautiful as this one."

The Ba Na Hills project was built by Sun Group, which has divided opinion with audacious projects elsewhere in Vietnam.

In 2016 it opened a cable car on Vietnam's tallest mountain Fansipan in the tourist hotpot Sa Pa, prompting complaints from locals who felt it spoiled the landscape and took business away from trekking guides.

Vietnam is no stranger to off-the-wall attractions.

A "crystal cloud" installation of 58,000 shimmering Swarovski beads in the rice-terraced hills of northern Vietnam opened earlier this year, while the surreal "Crazy House" hotel in central Da Lat, designed to look a trippy treehouse, has long attracted legions of curious visitors.

The country has long sought to boost visitor numbers and position itself as a must-see destination in Southeast Asia.

It clocked 13 million foreign visitors last year, mostly from China - a far cry from the 35 million international visitors to Thailand in 2017.

Golden Bridge designer Anh said he already has another project in the works: a silver bridge made to look like a god's strand of hair that will connect to his existing structure in the Ba Na Hills.

Vietnam property tycoon bets big on new airline

By AFP August 1, 2018 | 04:10 pm GMT+7

Trinh Van Quyet is confident that his new airline will turn a profit 'as soon as we start flying' in October. Photo by AFP/Nhac Nguyen

Bamboo Airways will come up against heavyweights such as AirAsia and Thai Airways as well as local players Vietnam Airlines and VietJet.
Pressed by poverty into work when he was 14, Trinh Van Quyet now presides over a Vietnamese property empire and is betting billions on a new airline in Southeast Asia's crowded aviation sector.

The 43-year-old tycoon clawed his way up from a tough start in the Vietnamese countryside, his modest aspiration back then to become a civil servant.

But from lowly beginnings -- his first job was in his mother's shop -- he now oversees the FLC Group empire that includes luxury resorts and golf courses, mining and vocational training.

He says he gave up his youth to get where he is today.

"I dared to sacrifice my childhood... when you're supposed to be able to play, study, and later, fall in love," he told AFP from his polished high-rise office in Hanoi this week.

His company has a market capitalisation of around $200 million and he is branching out, taking a punt on Bamboo Airways, a new airline set for its maiden flight in October and a first foray into a business that can be unforgiving to newcomers.

"We will be huge, right when we launch... we will make a profit as soon as we start flying," the bullish executive says.

His master plan is to lure piles of passengers to "undiscovered" holiday destinations -- many in spots he has resorts -- offering high-quality service on the cheap.

But he's got a lot going against him.

Bamboo Airways will come up against heavyweights such as AirAsia and Thai Airways as well as local players Vietnam Airlines and VietJet.

With a mushrooming middle class hungry for travel, Vietnam's aviation market has soared in recent years.

Passenger numbers jumped to 62 million last year from just 25 million in 2012, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam.

But Southeast Asia's once red-hot sector is showing signs of cooling while airport capacity is being squeezed across much of the region.

"It's not realistic to think that the kind of growth that we've seen in Vietnam.

The seeds of a new business sprouts to Saigon

By Quynh Tran August 2, 2018 | 03:08 pm GMT+7

Selling durians for cheap as long as the seeds are retained or returned - Saigon gets into the act.

180129

The trend of eating durians for cheap without the seeds, which began in the Mekong Delta and the Central Highlands, has now come to Saigon. A long line of people craving the fruit is a familiar scene every afternoon on Su Van Hanh Street in District 10.

180130

The price tag for durians here ranges from VND30,000 to 40,000 ($1.30-1.72) per kilogram. Sales start at 1 p.m. Returning the seeds is compulsory. People can take the durian home, but have to make a refundable deposit of 30 percent of the bill. The deposit is returned once the seeds are.

180131

“The demand for durian seeds is very high this year and the price for a kilogram is four times higher than last year, from VND30,000 to 120,000. So we use this way to collect the seeds and grow durians for our next season,” said Le Hong Long, the shop owner.

180132

About 500 kilograms of durian are transported from Dak Lak, Lam Dong and Dak Nong Provinces in the Central Highlands to this shop in Saigon every day and they are sold out in just one afternoon. The owner said that the durians here are naturally ripened; that no stimulant is used for early harvest.

“The durians are cheaper, at half the current market price since we collect the seeds. But we still make a profit even if it’s not much,” Long said.

180133

The shop allows only 10 people at a time to enter and pick the fruit. Hundreds await their turn, patiently.

180134

“I bought a few kilos here because the price was much cheaper than durian in the markets, and I’m happy to return the seeds anyway so the deposit is fine by me,” said Tien, a 21-year-old customer.

180135

For the first two days after the shop opened, customers had to eat the durian right on its premises and return the seeds. However, because space was limited, the shop began allowing customers to take the fruit home as long as they made a deposit.

180136

The customers have two days to return the seeds and redeem their deposit. The seeds are considered unusable after two days.

180137

The shop collects about 50 kilos of seeds every day. These are packed and sent to the farm right away.

Because of high demand, customers have to wait for nearly an hour to get their durians. The owner said he plans to get a bigger space for customers to eat the durian at the shop itself.

Same, I dunno why so many love to go USA tour. I hate to take long flight. I was forced to go New York, New Jersey and Boston for meetings yrs ago.

Months ago, I was forced again to go London. Went there for a meeting and immediately next day flight back to SG. Why couldn't they do a video conference?

Wah this one opposite, they like your "see san bin" lah so want to see you face to face instead of conference calls :D

At least nowadays got such a choice, last time still using pagers and internet still virtually non-existent so lan lan must travel there for meetings :(

Vietnamese travelers most annoyed by peers’ mobile phone addiction

By PR Newswire August 6, 2018 | 09:19 am GMT+7

180622

A new survey finds what irritates Vietnamese travelers the most is people staying glued to their mobile phones.

With the summer holiday season in full swing, online travel agency Agoda has been asking travelers what they think are the most annoying travel habits.

Noisy travelers (57 percent), travelers glued to their devices (47 percent), and those insensitive to cultural nuances (46) topped the most annoying habits of fellow travelers, according to Agoda's global 'Annoying Travel Habits' survey.

Mass tour groups and selfie-takers, cited by 36 percent and 21 percent respectively, completed the top five irritants list.

Chinese travelers seemingly have the highest tolerance for selfie-takers, with only 12 percent of Chinese respondents irritated with them, compared to Australians who are on the other end of the tolerance spectrum, with nearly a third (31 percent) citing holiday selfie-takers as annoying.

Insensitivity to local culture nuances is more than twice as irritating for Singaporeans (63 percent), Filipinos (61 percent) and Malaysians (60 percent) as it is for Chinese (21 percent) and Thai (27 percent) travelers. About half of British (54 percent) and two-fifths of American travelers (41 percent) are intolerant of this habit.

Mobile device addiction

Almost half (47 percent) of the global respondents cited travelers spending too much time on their mobile devices a major irritant. Compared to travelers from other countries, most Vietnamese (59 percent) find this habit most annoying (59).

Thai travelers, on the other hand, have the most relaxed attitude (31 percent) towards constant device usage on holiday.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, solo travelers spend nearly two hours a day on their devices when on holiday (117 minutes) - which is 15 percent more time than when they are traveling with friends (100 minutes) and 26 percent more time than if they are with family (86 minutes). Americans are the only exception to this trend, on average spending less time on their devices when traveling solo (62 minutes) than when they are with family (66 minutes) or friends (86 minutes).

Brits are the most engaged travelers when traveling together, limiting their screen time to just over an hour (63 minutes) a day; comparatively, Thai travelers spend more than two hours a day (125 minutes) on the phone when they travel with friends or family.

To encourage travelers to pay attention and really experience new destinations without their faces in their screens, Agoda has launched a 'Selfie Fail' campaign comprising of cheeky listicles and a video montage highlighting the pitfalls of smartphone dependence.

Styled in the format of 'epic fail' videos, Australian comedian Ozzyman narrates footage of real travelers getting into silly accidents and situations as a result of paying more attention to their devices than to their surroundings.

Malaysia detains nine Vietnamese women for illegal sex work

By Nguyen Quy August 6, 2018 | 01:16 pm GMT+7

Malaysian authorities have arrested 24 women, including nine Vietnamese, in an anti-prostitution raid in Melaka.

The raid was conducted on Saturday following several months’ surveillance of an old building on Jalan Tun Ali Street that hosted a small pub and 10 rooms which were used for prostitution, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

Chee Leong, head of the anti-prostitution operation, said that the 24 women, 15 Thai and 9 Vietnamese, were illegal sex workers.

Prior to the crackdown, local officials had several times failed to access the highly-secured building with its entrance gate carefully locked and many security cameras installed to detect any raid, officials said.

During Saturday’s raid, officials also apprehended six men, including a supervisor, two guards, and three customers. They are being held pending further investigation.

Last year, the Malaysian police had launched a large-scale crackdown on prostitution dens and nabbed 28 women, including five Vietnamese nationals who were alleged to have entered Malaysia with 90-day social visit passes.

Vietnam reported 670 human trafficking victims last year, down almost half from 1,128 in 2016. Most victims were uneducated women and children from poor areas who were sold to men seeking wives in China, Malaysia and South Korea, or just to bear children, or work as prostitutes in these countries.

Hanoi, HCMC are better places to live in

By Minh Nga August 16, 2018 | 10:40 am GMT+7

182596

Vietnam’s two biggest cities are among top five improvers in a global ranking of most liveable cities.

In the Economist Intelligence Unit's ranking of the world's most liveable cities, Hanoi and HCMC are two of the five biggest improvers in the last five years along with Abidjan in Cote d’Ivoire, Belgrade in Serbia, and Tehran in Iran.

Out of the 140 cities surveyed, Hanoi ranks 107 with an overall rating of 59.7 out of 100, marking a five-year rise of 5.5 percentage points.

HCMC is at 116 with 57.1 points, rising 4.4 percentage points.

This year, Melbourne in Australia gave up the throne after reigning for seven years in a row. Vienna has the top spot now, marking the very first time the Austrian capital has ever made it that far.

Although both Melbourne and Vienna have registered improvements in liveability over the last six months, increases in Vienna’s ratings, particularly in the stability category, gave it the edge.

The two cities are now separated by 0.7 of a percentage point, with Vienna scoring a near-ideal 99.1 out of 100 and Melbourne scoring 98.4.

Other cities that have made it to the top ten this year include Osaka in Japan, Canada’s Calgary, Australia’s Sydney, Canada’s Vancouver, Canada’s Toronto, Japan’s Tokyo, Denmark’s Copenhagen, and Australia’s Adelaide.

To come up with the rating, Economist evaluated the cities in over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Each factor in a city was rated as acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable or intolerable.

In January, Hanoi and HCMC were said to be among the top 10 cheapest cities in Southeast Asia this year. The capital city and the nation’s commercial hub took the 7th and 9th place respectively (out of 27) in the Cost of Living Index 2018 compiled by Numbeo, the world’s largest database of user contributed data about cities and countries worldwide.

Drug users, sex workers arrested in downtown Saigon restaurant

By Quoc Thang August 17, 2018 | 06:57 pm GMT+7

In a predawn raid on a downtown restaurant, Saigon police arrested dozens of drug users and sex workers.

The city police officers blockaded a section of Thai Van Lung Street in District 1 in the early hours on Friday before breaking into Queen Restaurant, one of the most popular night hangouts in the city.

They say they found waitresses in skimpy clothing flirting with drunken male customers and offering sexual services.

Around 20 female employees were able to escape the clutches of the inspection team, police said.

The suspected drug users and waitresses were taken to the police station for drug tests.

A group of officers also raided a hotel on Le Lai Street in the tourist district and caught two female staff of the restaurant offering sex services to clients.

The women told the police that the restaurant manager had sent them to the hotel to serve drunk customers who were charged up to VND5 million ($215) “per session.” The manager received VND1-2 million each session, they said.

Nguyen Ngoc Huy Hoang, 39, was arrested on charges of arranging illegal sex services for customers.

Friday’s raid was part of an ongoing campaign to tighten controls over “sensitive” business services offered by many restaurant and bars, particularly in the tourist area.

According to the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, Saigon has nearly 22,000 registered drug users, the highest in the country at nearly 10 percent of the total number.

Drug use is banned in Vietnam, and producing and dealing in drugs are criminal offenses.

Official data estimates there are 3,000 sex workers in Saigon.

Female sex workers are among the three most vulnerable groups, alongside drug users and male homosexuals, to HIV/AIDS.

There are around 250,000 people with HIV/AIDS in Vietnam.

Vietnam finance ministry suggests simpler betting rules

By Nguyen Ha August 18, 2018 | 07:31 am GMT+7

183037

The Ministry of Finance has proposed the removal of some criteria for investing in horse and dog races.

The ministry asked the government Thursday to consider removing a regulation that requires operators of a bookmaking business to have a minimum capital of VND1 trillion ($43.2 million) to invest in betting on horse races and VND300 billion ($12.95 million) for betting on dog races.

It also proposed the removal of other rules regarding the precision and upgradability of technical equipment in a racecourse.

The suggested removals are part of the ministry’s plan to reduce over 51 percent of business conditions it manages.

Vietnam last year approved a bill legalizing sports betting, and in June, the government promulgated a decree regulating the sports-betting business.

Opening this door of opportunity has drawn special interest from foreign investors coming into the country to build racehorses.

Vietnam jails two American subversives for 14 years

By Lan Ngoc August 22, 2018 | 09:40 pm GMT+7

A court has found two Vietnamese Americans and 10 Vietnamese citizens guilty of trying to "overthrow the people’s administration."

The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court on Wednesday sentenced Nguyen James Han, a 49-year-old man with dual American-Vietnamese citizenship, and Phan Angel, a 62-year-old American national of Vietnamese origin, to 14 years in prison followed by immediate deportation.

The court also sentenced the duo's 10 Vietnamese accomplices to 5-11 years in prison and 2-3 years of probation on the same charges.

The indictment said the defendants were members of the "Provisional National Government of Vietnam," an organization founded by Dao Minh Quan in the U.S., which aims to overthrow the Vietnamese government through violence and acts of terrorism.

Due to limited education, lack of legal knowledge and being exposed to bad information, the defendants had formed one-sided views and had blind faith in the organization's promises of titles and other recognitions, the court heard.

They distorted the Party and the State's policies, brought the organization's members to Vietnam and recruited locals to carry out activities aimed at overthrowing the people's administration, the indictment said.

It said that in February 2017, Phan and Nguyen returned to Vietnam with plans to sabotage the country's celebration of its Reunification Day on April 30 and the International Workers' Day on May 1.

184169

Phan was found to have contacted a number of the organization's members in Vietnam to carry out disruptive protests, preparing spray paints and 4,000 pamphlets for these events.

The group also allegedly planned to break into broadcasting stations to broadcast propaganda for Quan.

However, Vietnamese authorities successfully neutralized all of the organization's plans and arrested the 12 defendants between April 19 and May 17 2017.

In total, the group only managed to gather about 100 signatures in support of Quan, investigators said.

At the trial on Wednesday, 11 of the 12 defendants admitted to their crimes and asked for leniency, while Phan denied the charges.

The court concluded that the defendants' crimes were "especially serious" as they violated Vietnam's national security, political security, social order and safety and went against the country's national interests, meriting strict punishment.

Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security in January classified the "Provisional National Government of Vietnam" as a terrorist organization. It has been accused of being behind a petrol bomb attack that burnt 320 motorbikes at a police warehouse in Dong Nai Province in April 2017, as well as a failed terror attack on Tan Son Nhat Airport later that month.

The HCMC court had last December sentenced 15 Vietnamese to 5-16 years in prison for the two terror attacks.

Vietnamese authorities have also issued international arrest warrants against Quan and six others, all of whom are living in the U.S. or Canada.

Don’t treat ride-hailing firms as taxis, Vietnam government advised

By Nguyen Hoai, Minh Huong August 22, 2018 | 08:37 am GMT+7

184171

Forcing ride-hailing cars to work like traditional taxis is a serious mistake revealing a non-innovative mindset, a leading economist says.

Nguyen Dinh Cung, director of the Central Institute of Economic Management (CIEM), criticized state agencies for a “managing mindset” that “is not yet innovated”.

Cung was referring to the latest draft decree on transportation management, which asks ride-hailing firms like Grab, Fastgo and Vietgo to comply with many conditions that are applied to normal transportation businesses like taxi companies.

He said firms that primarily used software cannot be called a transportation business and said the new move was not consistent with the country’s stated aim of removing at least 50 percent of current business conditions.

Cung told VnExpress that the state managers must also think in terms of the market from the perspective of facilitating new technologies and business models instead of using administrative procedures to intervene in their business.

While the latest draft has cut many conditions for the ride-hailing business, such as logos, paint colors, board signs, an operating center, communication equipment and uniforms for drivers, Cung said there were still several negative conditions.

For instance, the draft decree requires ride-hailing firms to send their transport contract information to the Transport Department before providing their service.

It also requires that ride-hailing firms have a team to manage and monitor traffic safety issues.

Cung said such conditions were meant to give authorities more room to intervene in the operations of the ride-hailing firms.

He has recommended to the Government Office that the draft is not approved and instead, the state tries to encourage new investment forms or business models with an open and fair environment in keeping with Industry 4.0 trends.

Even if they don’t want to encourage the new technology-based business yet, the laws should not do away with such business models with irrelevant, old conditions, he told VnExpress.

Prepared by the Ministry of Transport to replace the Decree 86/2014 on managing automobile transportation businesses, the fifth edition of the draft has been released for public feedback.

The tussle between ride-hailing cars and traditional taxis has not cooled after the exit of Uber from the Southeast Asian market in March. Taxi firms have continued to complain about the unfair competition they are facing.

They have also joined hands to fight the market onslaught of ride-hailing firms.

The ride-hailing market has seen new entrants after Uber’s departure, including Aber, Fastgo and GoViet, which is an affiliate of Indonesia’s Gojek.

Current market dominator Grab has expanded its service to include GrabFood and GrabCar Business, the latter targeting the corporate sector. These moves pose further challenges for long-standing taxi firms like Mai Linh, Taxi Group and Vinasun.

‘Culture shocks’ jolt students returning to Vietnam

By Dat Nguyen August 22, 2018 | 08:05 am GMT+7

Many Vietnamese students are finding that their foreign degrees do not give them an automatic head start back home.

After four years of studying marketing at a university in the U.K., Pham Thi Thanh Huyen was looking forward, eagerly, to getting a dream job.

She’d worked hard to get an overseas degree and was ready to deploy her new knowledge and skills and reap its benefits.

However, the dream job has remained just that – a dream.

It took a year after returning for Huyen to eventually find a job at a bank, which pays her around VND10 million ($430) a month, just enough to cover basic living costs in the busy city of Hanoi, making the same money as peers who studied in the country.

“I find it hard to enjoy work as I’m only making enough to survive,” the 24-year-old said.

Huyen’s plight, and that of many others returning with foreign degrees, does not end with lower than expected pay packages.

They find that they there are other factors to finding jobs that they’d not considered before.

Many returnees find that the labor market in Vietnam doesn’t welcome them with special positions in companies. They come back to find that their foreign study has not added value to their resume.

“Most Vietnamese businesses don’t particularly prioritize recruiting returnees,” said Ngo Thi Ngoc Lan, regional director of Navigos Search, a leading provider of executive search services in Vietnam.

Applicants are recruited based on how well they suited the company, and not their studies abroad, Lan told VnExpress International.

For middle level management jobs, employers care more about how an individual solves a practical problem in the business than an overseas university degree she or he possesses, she added.

At Navigos, although many employees have studied in Europe, the U.S. and other Asian countries, “there is no special case when an employee was paid higher just because he or she studied abroad,” Lan said.

One of the reasons returnees struggle to find a suitable job in their own country is because they see themselves at a higher place than their local peers, Lan said.

In fact, an overseas degree can even become a disadvantage.

Some Vietnamese businesses don’t regard returnees highly because they usually demand a higher salary than they are worth, Lan added.

An applicant with a hospitality degree from Switzerland expects a salary from $600-$1,000 a month in Vietnam, but local hotels only employ them as waiters with a paycheck of $200-$300, she added.

Echoing Lan, Phan Truong Son, deputy director of a local technical company, said that his employees are paid according to their performance, not degrees.

Son rejected an applicant who came back from the U.S. a few months ago, because he asked for $1,000 a month while his capability was “not worth that much.”

A student who’s just graduated needs to start small with basic skills like writing an email, but many returnees are looking to jump right into strategic positions in the company and do bigger things, Son said.

“Their expectations are just too high,” he added.

184172

A development gap

Another difficulty that returnees face in finding a right job is the underdevelopment of some industries in Vietnam compared to other parts of the world.

Foreign degree holders might see that things are done differently in Vietnam from what they learned overseas, said Kew Pham, a project manager at BMI, a U.K.-based organizer of international student fairs.

As their colleagues might be out of date with the latest inventions and trends, it can be a challenging work environment for talented returnees, she added.

For instance, derivatives, an investment tool that goes beyond simple stocks and bonds, “is a particular financial area that not many Vietnamese companies have stepped into,” said Nguyen Tri Hieu, an economist with over 30 years of banking experience in the U.S. and Vietnam.

For this reason, students who have majored in this area in other countries might find it very difficult to find a suitable job upon returning to the country, Hieu said.

However, the number of Vietnamese students going abroad has been increasing every year. Over 22,000 Vietnamese students attended colleges and universities in the U.S. last year, an increase for the 16th year in a row, according to the U.S.-based Institute of International Education.

In Japan, Vietnam was ranked second in the number of foreign students, which was over 61,000 last year, over thirteen times higher than 2011, according to the Japan Student Services Organization.

Vietnam sent over 130,000 students abroad in 2016, according to the Ministry of Education and Training.

There’s hope, too

But not all returnees find coming back to Vietnam a disappointing experience, said La Linh Nga, director of the Psycho-Pedagogy Research and Application Center in Hanoi (PPRAC).

Those who have set clear targets when studying abroad can find the transitioning process easy and even rewarding, said Nga, who often counsels these returnees.

Minh Giang, who returned to Vietnam from the U.K. two years ago, still finds the country “fun and exciting.”

He plans to open his own business soon, which was the plan even before he went abroad to study. In fact, it was the reason he went abroad in the first place.

Giang has not applied for a conventional job to climb up the corporate ladder, as he knew the work environment would not meet his expectations. But he remained upbeat.

“There are still a lot of opportunities in Vietnam, and with a positive attitude, returnees can find them.”

The indictment said the defendants were members of the planned to break into broadcasting stations to broadcast propaganda for Quan.

Whilst it is true that it's quite scary when we think of the communists, the Americans n it's western allies are not angelic communities too.

It's time d world remove the curtains off the face of the Americans to reveal the truth of who they are and what's their intention in their quest to hold the whole world hostage in the name of world peace and the wars that would end all wars.

It would be a fool for any nation to believe that the americans could possess weapons n chemicals of mass destructions but we could not so as to hv world peace and order.

Let it be known that the Americans refused to sign a treaty amongst all nations to ban all types of weapons of mass destruction.

It took a year after returning for Huyen to eventually find a job at a bank, which pays her around VND10 million ($430) a month, just enough to cover basic living costs in the busy city of Hanoi, making the same money as peers who studied in the country.

While I fully agree they are not angels, however they are always the one that everybody expects to do something when some rogue nations does something bad towards their neighbours, and if they do not do anything and just stand aside somebody in this world will also criticise them also for not doing anything also, either way they also will be blasted

Please dun be mistaken I am not an ang-mo sarporkter as everybody here knows that I hate going to eng-mo cuntries but I just state facts as it is and everybody is free to voice & have their own opinions.... ^_^

The ones that really takes the cakes are those that ignores all other cuntries concern and just blatantly takes over international or other cuntries territories and declare it theirs, then start to build their own structures on it telling the world that it is not for military purposes, but then starts to install missiles bases few years on and ignore all other cunplaints, only recognises the international rulings when it is in their favour and when its not, just simply says they dun recognise them WTF  these are the cuntries that we should all be very wary off....and so on..... :(

Never 1k for grad unless he/she been working for yrs.

in fact many foreign grads are working lesser...also many no jobs...:)

Main problem with oversea grads are when they are back in VN, they think highly of themselves and start to choose company, type of job and demand high salary but after many months without a job, they start to lower their standard.

I had a few candidates demand this and that but without realizing what he/she can contribute to the company.

Fantastic info. In fact my friend's wife kept asking us to go n try her durian. Her land very sloppy.

Actually I'm planning a trip next year during d durian season, to go to anjiang, stay in her house, then proceed to a seaside casino resort in HaTien, (the border of Vietnam n Cambodia)then proceed to kampot-kap, then to sihanoukville.

This October, I and my friend will go mocbai bavet n possibly Sihanouk for at least one month. Hopefully, I can find some interesting stuff especially in n around mocbai. Of course I will rent or buy a second hand motorcycle to explore. If everything is ok, I and my friend will make Cambodia our home. And of course to find gf here too.

Saigon pissed off by people pissing in public

By Thien Ngon August 29, 2018 | 08:23 am GMT+7

Public littering, urination, and even defecation are a common nuisance in Ho Chi Minh City. Illustration photo by AFP

A HCMC municipal department has proposed that people caught pissing and littering on the streets are publicly shamed.

Public littering, urination, and even defecation are a common nuisance in Ho Chi Minh City, angering and disgusting both locals and tourists. While these offenses are subject to fines of up to VND400,000 ($17.30), not much headway has been made in curbing such behavior.

Now, the city’s Department of Natural Resources and the Environment is proposing that people caught urinating or littering in public places by CCTV cameras are identified and fined.

It hopes that this move, combined with support from the public, will prove effective in reducing the nuisance.

The department has suggested that the local urban order management group and construction inspection team are assigned the task.

The fines collected would go towards support and maintenance fees for this team.

Since catching people in the act of littering or urinating is not easy, the department wants agencies to use evidence from surveillance cameras to identify and fine violators.

At present, only the specialized environmental protection inspectorate and environmental police have access to the recording equipment, making the discovery of violations even more difficult.

The department has said that city should also carry out random checks on public solid waste disposal, of dredged mud, soil, bricks, concrete, for example, to spot violations and issue finds.

Whether the department’s latest proposal will succeed in curbing uncouth behavior remains to be seen.

Vietnamese men world’s top alcohol consumers: report

By Dat Nguyen August 28, 2018 | 10:12 am GMT+7

185161
Beers are display for sale in a market in Hanoi, Vietnam. Photo by Reuters/Kham
Vietnamese men drink over five standard drinks a day on average, according to the 2016 Global Burden of Disease Study.
A standard drink contains 10 grams of alcohol.

Balkan countries and Portugal are the others that have the same level of consumption, according to the report, which uses data from 592 studies on the risk of alcohol use done between 1990 and 2016.

In contrast, Vietnamese women are among the smallest consumers of alcoholic drinks in the world with less than one standard drink a day, the report said.

While 40 to 59.9 percent of Vietnamese men drink alcohol, which is the global median, only 19.9 percent of women do so, it added.

185162

Earlier this month the World Health Organization (WHO) said the high consumption of beer and alcohol in Vietnam was imposing a heavy burden on the country in the form of non-contagious diseases.

A Vietnamese adult above 15 years of age drinks 8.3 liters of pure alcohol per year on average, much higher than in China (7.2 liters), Cambodia (6.7), the Philippines (6.6) and Singapore (2), according to WHO.

The country spends $3.4 billion on alcohol each year, or 3 percent of the government’s revenues, according to official data.

The local market, which is growing steadily at 5 percent a year, is dominated by four strong companies, Sabeco, Habeco, Heineken, and Hue Brewery (owned by Carlsberg), which accounted for 90 percent of the beer market last year.

In backward countries, urinating indiscriminately and even defecating on drains is not unusual ,even in Singapore in the 1960s.

Because my father loves to plant orchids, so when I was young, in the 1960s, we moved to different countryside's in spore.

We first moved to the junction of ulu pandan road and clementi road in 1966 when I was in pri school. At this spot was a bus depot and the camp was a gurka camp. There was a beautiful stream flowing here and we shit at this stream openly without toilet.

From ulu pandan road, we shifted to near bulim cemetery in Jurong, then to mandai and finally to a nursery in clementi road next to Corona, just opposite the former Union Eating House, very popular in selling "chi Pau Kai".

In our last house in Clementi, we initially don't HV any toilet. We hold our stool n shit in the drain at night without any cover. If we can't hold it in the day time, we find a secluded spot and shit into a newspaper, wrap it like a packet of char kuay teow and then throw it into the drain. That was Singapore in the past.

My grandmother lived in potong pasir. In the 1960s, it's all Kampong house here and there's no toilet flushing system here. Over here, we have wooden toilets and we shit into a pail and every few days (not everyday) there will be people to collect these pails, it stinks and invested with flies. Worst of all, in the whole of potong pasir, everywhere n every path, were filled with cowdungs. In my grandma house, we got to wear shoes inside the house because the hse was also filled with cowdungs. Those days in potong pasir, the Indians rear big herds of cows for milk and everyday, the cows were lead into a big pond to swim and so on the way, the cows shit everywhere.

Tet, Lunar New Year, an official holiday in California

By Linh Nguyen August 30, 2018 | 05:04 pm GMT+7

California Governor Jerry Brown has signed a bill recognizing the Lunar New Year as a day of special significance.

Senate Bill 892, proposed by California Senators Richard Pan and Scott Wiener, officially recognizes the Lunar New Year, known as Tet in Vietnam, and requires the Governor to honor the festival annually.

According to the bill, all public schools and educational institutions are encouraged to conduct exercises recognizing the traditions and cultural significance of Lunar New Year, the contributions of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Californians to the state, and any local festivities and celebrations of the occasion.

“The passage of this bill recognizes the rich history of one of the most celebrated events worldwide, and demonstrates to the API community in our state, that we are all part of the California family,” Pan said at a recent news conference in front of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.

API communities have been a valuable part in the development of California and helped make it what it is today, and this bill is a great way to promote cultural understanding and inclusivity among future generations, Wiener said.

“We now have a great opportunity to embrace and celebrate our API communities. I am proud that California will recognize the significance of Lunar New Year,” said Wiener.

San Francisco, among many other jurisdictions in California, has already designated Lunar New Year as an official school holiday. The state board of education recognized Lunar New Year as a festival of special relevance in 2016.

Lunar New Year is celebrated by millions of Asian and Pacific Islanders around the world, including those living and working in U.S.

In California, there are around 6 million people identified as Asian (2017, United States Census Bureau). California has the highest number and second highest percentage of Asian Americans by state. Among these, more than 600,000 people are Vietnamese (United State Census Bureau)

Tet is the most important celebration in Vietnamese culture, and people from all parts of Vietnam and the world try to make it home for the festival celebrations.

It usually falls in January or February. It is an occasion for family unions and pilgrimages, for people to come together and wish each other good fortune in the upcoming year.

Vietnam allows use of yuan at Chinese border

By Dat Nguyen August 30, 2018 | 12:09 pm GMT+7

Vietnamese can trade in yuan at the border with China, the State Bank of Vietnam has decreed.

It means the transactions that traders and residents have been doing informally in the yuan for long along the border gets legal sanction from October 12.

Economist Nguyen Tri Hieu told VnExpress International: “There have not been any specific regulations on using the yuan in transactions. This will be the first.”

The new regulation would also allow Chinese tourists to pay for goods and services in their own currency in border areas, he added.

Vietnam recently became China’s largest trade partner in Southeast Asia. Bilateral trade in the first half of this year rose 17 percent year-on-year to $46.82 billion, with Vietnam’s exports accounting for $16.62 billion.

Exports to China had risen 61.5 percent against 2016 to $35.46 billion in 2017, according to data from the International Monetary Fund, as cited by Bloomberg.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade said it is likely that two-way trade would hit $100 billion this year.

Half of Vietnamese think country still in recession: survey

By Dat Nguyen September 4, 2018 | 11:47 am GMT+7

Almost half of Vietnamese think the country is still in recession, a recent Nielsen survey has found.

The Vietnam Consumer Confidence Index Report for the second quarter said while 48 percent of respondents thought the recession persists, 46 percent were positive the country would come out of it in the next 12 months, an increase of 8 percentage points from the previous quarter.

The survey was done for The Conference Board, which describes itself as “a global, independent business membership and research association working in the public interest.”

186181

But Nguyen Huong Quynh, managing director of market research firm Nielsen Vietnam, said the country is not in a recession and has actually been growing at 6-7 percent in the last three quarters.

“Despite the fact that none of the economic key performance indicators indicate the country is in recession, consumers continue to believe that the current situation is not really positive.”

This sentiment could significantly influence consumers’ spending and saving patterns, she added.

Many believe it is not a good time to spend. Up to 70 percent of respondents said that they are willing to channel their spare cash to saving, the report said.

186182

The report also said consumers continue to feel upbeat about their personal state of finance.

Seventy-six percent of respondents thought their personal finances would be good or excellent in the next 12 months, a drop of one percentage point from Q1.

Vietnam’s GDP grew at 7.08 percent in the first half, the highest ever since 2011.

Yes LT ¥1500 is the minimum in Tier 1 Danshui KTVs.
Only the LT ¥1200 is extinct since late 2017.

Yes I remember your group did went to Danshui KTVs before Dongguan was kaput.
This year the fox tail of this CB Kia finally come out after he amended the constitution to stay in power till infinity!

Didn't know can do that.
Any KTV in this particular current fav cuntry of mine also can do it this way?

Nowadays you prefer to eat fast food then breakfast?
By the way I am a fast food or buffet man.

No lah I meant can just take away immediately but its for LT not ST. Yup almost all can do like that, only when during hot season like public holidays then they may forbid cos not enough girls for their KTV clients liao then they will not allow unless you take a room

Wah champion lah still can be a buffet man, I have always been a LT man and never had the stamina for buffets :o that means you have tried the JKT buffets before, where you can stay in there the whole day and have as much you want for a fixed sum???:D I think now no more available liao.....

Saigon pimp for beauty queens arrested

By Kien Tuong, Sen September 7, 2018 | 05:21 pm GMT+7

A young man allegedly pimping for models and beauty queens, charging thousands of dollars, has been arrested in Ho Chi Minh City.

Kieu Dai Du, 22, was arrested after HCMC police simultaneously raided two hotels in Pham Ngu Lao Ward, District 1 and Tran Hung Dao Street, District 5.

They said they found four couples involved in the sex trade. Among four women, one was a runner-up in a beauty pageant, the other was a TV host, and the remaining two were university students. They worked as models and actresses in HCMC.

Local reports say that Du had a three-tier system for charging clients. The premium tier fetched between $7,000-25,000 per “session,” the average tier, $1000-5000, and the lower tier, $300-1000.

According to the police, Du harbored the idea of capitalizing on beautiful women since he was an undergraduate. He frequented various forums to promote his escort service, ranging from average to premium prices.

After graduation, Vu used his job as a manager of a Vietnamese restaurant to cover up his real job. He approached young and attractive ladies in the entertainment industry online and enticed them to “hang out” with millionaires for whopping sums.

Vu also spoke to wealthy men to offer his service, which he referred to as “confidential, intimate talk” provided by beautiful ladies. He would send pictures of his “employees” for customers to choose from, using Zalo, a major communication application in Vietnam.

After choices were made, Du would organize a coffee date between a client and a girl first. If further progress was made, the client would reserve a room at a 3-star hotel or more upscale places for the “intimate talk” to take place.

If a request for a sex tour package was made, the client would have to spend tens of thousands of dollars. In addition to his commissions, Tu also received tips from the women for his service. Because his earnings were enormous, he spent a lot of money on extravagant trips, police said.

According to a member of the Hanoi Lawyers Association, since the women are all above 18 years old, their clients will receive petty fines of VND500,000 to VND1 million ($21,44-42,88).

According to Vietnam’s law on prostitution, the sex workers will be given a warning and fined VND100,000-300,000 ($4,2-12,8), while pimps and sex ring organizers can face jail terms.

How Du will be dealt with following his arrest is not known.

Chill this summer with Hanoi specialty: cold snail noodles

By Bao Ngoc September 8, 2018 | 11:01 am GMT+7

In a corner of Hanoi's Dong Da District, this edition of snail noodles cools down the sizzling heat of summer.

I stopped my motorbike at the sight of the shoulder pole on the sidewalk. Finding the place was not difficult though one could as easily overlook the neatly arranged stall.

A hundred meters inside Alley 136, Tay Son Street, life seems to take on a different façade. The motorbike horns seem to be less cacophonous in this shady alleyway.

186833
The shoulder pole occupies a small area on the sidewalk.

Unlike the feast of the hot version of bun oc is, cold snail soup is almost unique for its utmost simplicity. One serving, costing VND30,000 ($1.28), involves two bowls, one each of noodles and snails in snail broth.

The owner, whose name I never find out, is quick and practiced. I barely sit on my plastic stool when the first bowl of bun, or Vietnamese rice noodles, appears on my metal tray placed on another stool.

With a metal stick, she expertly pulls out steamed snail flesh from the shell and puts in another bowl. Then some magic happens: the woman takes a long bamboo ladle to scoop the snail broth from a mysterious hole in the centre of one of her baskets. It turns out the hole is the mouth of a pot fixed in the rattan basket.

186834
he pot of snail broth is hide under a rattan cover.

The dish is complete with a few drops of chili sauce. The sauce is super spicy and also keeps the odor of the snails at bay. “Snails are thought to be ‘cold’ on the stomach, and I need the chilly sauce to warm it up,” Trang, who was having her second bowl of noodles, said.

But while a few drops of the chili sauce could do the task perfectly, a spoonful could burn your tongue. “I put in too much chili sauce; it is a bit too strong for me,” Trang said morosely.

At many cold snail noodle stalls in Hanoi, the noodles are bar-shaped vermicelli. But this stall serves tangled noodle strands. The choice isn’t bad since the thin strands of noodle go well with the coolness of the dish.

186835
The thin noodle strands are dipped into the sour and sweet broth.

The broth is the combination of steamed snail broth and wine vinegar, treating customers sour and sweet savor.

“There was a boy who thought the broth was fish sauce and always left half of it untouched. Later when he found out it was snail broth, he would drink all the broth until his bowl was clean,” said the owner.

Not to repeat the boy’s mistake, I drank most of the broth. The sourness is not too strong; it instead gives me a pleasant cool feeling in the fierce heat.

The stall is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. The portion is perfect for a light supper. You might have to order a second helping if you are hungry.

Location: 17, Alley 106, Tay Son street, Hanoi

Price: VND 30,000 ($1.28)

Seriously tho, I have 2 levels of standards here even when TCSS

First are strangers or forumners whom I do not know or met in real life before, I will still reply out of courtesy since they have honour their presence here in this TCSS thread but I will just take whatever they post or reply as it is, meaning that even if it is wrong or misinformation I will take the first initiative to offer some constructive friendly comments but if they are not too happy about it then I will just let them be and let them be to be "politically correct" in whatever they have said or posted because it doesn't really benefit me in any way to prove them wrong

Secondly are people or forumners whom I know or already met personally, this I will still make an effort to help with some constructive frenly comments (if I do know.....cos definitely I myself are learning something new everyday :D) cause at least I know they will not take my comments to heart since they know me personally & know that I meant no harm ;)
