Sharing is okay but need to exercise some "selective" sharing and not post openly for the whole world to read

Sometimes even such selective sharing can get out of hand, goot example is previous year the youngest kaki in our SBF travelling group brought along a personal fren to join in so I am okay since he can vouch for his fren. This fren was telling us that he really need to go to this joint becos of some strong recommendation from a senior SBF forumner whom I also know personally, end up that joint is actually one which I have been a frequent patron for more than 15 years liao, then I asked that fren exactly who was the senior forumner and end up it was one whom I had shared that same joint with before since I know him personally ......

It is a vicious cycle machiam those pyramid schemes, 1 fella will tell 2 frens, that 2 frens will tell another 2 frens each = 4, these 4 in turn will tell another 2 frens each = 8.......and the pyramid becomes bigger & bigger until that joint is busted, in hokkien is called Lan Pa Pa Lan...........:(

Posted: Facebook appoints Vietnamese woman as national director

By Thi Ha March 20, 2018 | 05:11 pm GMT+7

Le Diep Kieu Trang will be taking charge of Facebook's Vietnam operations from its office in Singapore.

Facebook has named Le Diep Kieu Trang the director of its Vietnam operations.

Trang, 38, will be in charge of the social network's business development in Vietnam, a Facebook representative told VnExpress on Tuesday.

Kenneth Bishop, managing director of Facebook in Southeast Asia, said with more than 60 million people using Facebook in Vietnam each month, Facebook is investing in human resources to support the business community and its partners in Vietnam.

With her professional experience, Trang, also known as Christy Le, will be able to support companies in Vietnam, he said.

160933

Trang comes from a family with a long business tradition.

Her father, Le Van Tri, is former deputy CEO of The Southern Rubber Industry Joint Stock Company (Casumina), Vietnam's leading rubber manufacturer, while her brother, Le Tri Thong, is former deputy CEO of Dong A Bank and is currently deputy chairman of Phu Nhuan Jewelry Joint-Stock Company (PNJ).

Trang won scholarships to study at Oxford University in England and then Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the U.S.

She previously worked for global management consulting firm McKinsey in the U.S. before joining her husband to found Misfit Wearables, a startup specializing in keeping track of human health and physical activities that attracted investment from John Sculley, former CEO of Apple, and Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing.

Misfit was acquired by Fossil Group for $260 million in 2015, but Trang continued to work as CEO of Fossil Vietnam until early March this year.

Trang will be running Facebook's Vietnam operations from the company's office in Singapore, but it is not yet clear when she will start her new job.

Vietnamese people love social media and half of the population get their news through this channel, a survey of 1,000 Vietnamese people conducted by Pew Research Center found in January.

Vietnam has around 64 million Facebook users, accounting for 3 percent of global Facebookers, according to a report released in July last year by We Are Social, a social media marketing and advertising agency.

More than half of the Vietnamese population of nearly 92 million is online, and people spend more than two hours each day on average on the social media network, said the report.

Vietnam named one of the friendliest places on Earth for expats

By Vi Vu March 24, 2018 | 04:00 am GMT+7

More than 80 percent of expats describe the Vietnamese as welcoming, and 16 percent plan to stay forever.

Vietnam has been named among the top 10 destinations for expats in a new ranking aimed at guiding the world’s rising number of modern nomads.

The country was placed ninth on the InterNations’ 2018 Expat Insider survey, climbing three spots from last year.

More than four in five expats, or 81 percent, described the Vietnamese people as welcoming, and 73 percent said it was easy to settle down in the country, the survey found.

Of the expats questioned, 56 percent said they had found it easy to make friends with locals, and 16 percent said they planned to stay forever.

More than half of the expats said they planned to stay in the country for up to five years, which was well above the global average of 35 percent.

“I love the friendly vibe in the city,” said an expat from South Korea who lives in Saigon, as cited in an InterNations press release on Tuesday. “People are mostly nice and gentle.”

InterNations, the largest network for people who live and work abroad, this year ranked 65 economies by looking at comments from nearly 13,000 expats from 188 countries and territories.

Portugal was named the place with the happiest expats, followed by Taiwan, where most expats said they felt at home, and Mexico, where many said it was easy to settle down and acclimatize to the local culture.

Cambodia, Bahrain, Costa Rica, Oman, Colombia and Canada were other destinations named in the top 10.

161401

The United States was ranked 36th, while the least friendly countries were Finland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria and Kuwait, the survey found.

There are around 82,000 foreigners living and working in Vietnam.

The new ranking is uplifting in wake of an HSBC survey in September 2017 that found many expats were not happy with life in the country, with only 28 percent of expats agreeing that they enjoyed a better overall quality of life than in their home countries.

According to HSBC, the average income for expats in Vietnam dropped by 14.5 percent from the previous year to $88,096 in 2017, which is lower than the global average. Vietnamese workers earned $2,200 on average last year.

Just 6 months ago it was 28% saying it was good but now it have totally reversed?????

This goes to show how different entities will produce something totally different to suit their own agenda, just like most so-called qualified Economists will always have inaccurate predictions but nobody ever blames them or question them, the Sinkie Garment employs a lot of highly paid economists to work for them but still need to "adjust" their forecasts every 3 months cos the actual data kept drifting widely from their previous forecasts

Sea water turns blackish in Da Nang

Officials have collected water samples for testing

By Tuan Son / Tuoi Tre News March 26, 2018, 10:44 GMT+7

161609

Blackish water has appeared over the past few days on a five-kilometer stretch of a beach in Da Nang, raising pollution concerns.

Thick yellow foam and a foul smell were also reported by locals, who have been afraid to go into the water for fear of catching diseases.

The affected body of water is located along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, spanning Da Nang’s Thanh Khe and Lien Chieu Districts.

There are 28 sewer openings located along this stretch of beach, which receives the largest daily volume of treated wastewater in Vietnam, according to Mai Ma, director of a local sewage treatment company.

Ma’s company runs a sewage treatment plant that collects both rainwater and household wastewater from local rivers for treatment before discharging treated water into the ocean.

At times, heavy rains can cause the plant’s systems to become overloaded, leading to untreated sewage leaking into the ocean, the director explained.

However, as it has not rained in Da Nang in the past few days, this has been ruled out as a possible cause for the recently spotted blackish sea water.

A spokesperson from the environment watchdog of Da Nang told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Sunday evening that officials had collected water samples from the affected area for lab tests to determine what had caused the water to turn blackish.

The administration of Da Nang has earmarked multiple investments for upgrading the capacity of local sewage treatment plants, as well as asking upstream factories to treat their own wastewater before discharging it into rivers.

Seriously tho, unless we change at 1 shot a huge amount like more than S$10K then it may be economically feasible to take advantage of good exchange rates, people like us that goes too frequently may not need to as we will still end up the same in the long run due to law of averages ;) i.e. we may change at better rates now but other months we may change at lesser rates so over a few years we still end up the same due to averaging  (this is assuming we are changing almost the same standard amounts every week or month), the only people that may benefit are those irregular visitors that goes only once or twice a year so if they change now it would be ideal.

Fares hiked by Vietnamese airlines and airports

By Doan Loan April 2, 2018 | 10:48 am GMT+7

The cost of traveling with children has jumped in April on national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines.

Vietnam Airlines has increased airfares for children aged between two and 12 years from 75 to 90 percent of the cost of an adult ticket.

Ticket prices will remain at 10 percent of an adult fare for infants under two years old on the airline.

Budget carrier Vietjet Air has also said it has increased the cost of changing the name on a ticket by 28 percent on international flights to VND800,000 ($35.12), and by 21 percent for domestic flights to VND495,000 ($21.73). Changes to a flight date have also gone up 16 percent to VND800,000 for international flights, plus the fare difference.

Service and security fees at local airports have been raised slightly to VND5,000 ($0.22) following a regulation issued by Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport last August.

Vietnam's aviation industry has been booming in recent years. The country served more than 94 million air passengers in 2017, up 16 percent from the previous year, including 13 million foreigners.

Vietnamese firm pours $100 million into local ride-hailing app

By Thanh Le April 2, 2018 | 11:54 am GMT+7

163012

The move follows rival Grab's takeover of Uber's Southeast Asia operations.

A Vietnamese transport company has invested $100 million in local ride-hailing app Vivu, according to a statement issued on Saturday.

Nguyen Tri Dung, director of Phuong Trang, said he had always wanted to invest in a so-called ‘made in Vietnam’ product, and Vivu, as a startup, was lacking the funds and human resources to realize its potential and flourish. The $100 million investment is a win-win for both sides, he said.

Vivu founder Tran Thanh Nam said the app has rebranded a month earlier than planned in an apparent bid to take advantage of rival Grab's recent aquisition of Uber.

Now known as Vato, Dung said that what sets it apart from other ride-hailing services like Grab and Uber is how the software functions as an e-commerce platform, allowing users to choose different vehicle options, not just limited to one. Vato also has a price bargaining system, a feature absent in other similar apps, he added.

Vivu debuted in Vietnam on March 2016 under the name FaceCar, and received widespread attention after a Vietnamese expat in Germany offered to invest $1 billion in the app. However, the following year, Tran Thanh Nam called the investment a 'sham' and subsequently canceled the deal.

On March 23, ride-hailing firm Uber Technologies Inc announced that it had agreed to sell its Southeast Asian business to bigger regional rival Grab, marking the U.S. company’s second retreat from an Asian market. Just one day after the news of Uber’s departure from Vietnam was announced, the number of downloads for the now-Vato app skyrocketed to twice its previous peak, according to founder Tran Thanh Nam.

Its the same everywhere, basic economics are always sidelined by pure greed, same as in Sinkie

When there are lesser demands the prices will stay low, which is logical since does not make sense to raise prices when you are already not getting much business. When demand goes up ==> equates to higher takings due to economies of scale but unfortunately greed immediately takes over as then all the thousand & one reasons will come in as to why they need to raise prices e.g. need to invest in another new Terminal so travellers need to pay more for their greed

In Sinkie when you want to do any businesses, you need to have your own $$$ to be able to start-up.....not just to start-up but especially to endure the initial period where you may not have enough revenue/business for sustenance, failing which you simply need to wind-up and say bye-bye to all those hard-saved $$$$. This is why most silver-spooned so-called "entrepreneurs" always succeeded where others failed, as they always have their well-heeled parents to pump in more $$$ until they make $$$$. Sinkie Garment largi best, ask you to pay for their initial start-up costs before they even start their business

Fetus dies as abortion pills mistakenly given to mother in southern Vietnam

Three expectant mothers at the same medical center fell victim to the careless mistake, but only one of them suffered the worst consequence

By Thai Xuan / Tuoi Tre News April 3, 2018, 15:07 GMT+7

163353

Health authorities in the southern province of Tien Giang confirmed on Monday that a local mother had lost her first fetus early last month after taking abortion medicine a staff member of a local medical center administered to her by mistake.

On March 7, Huynh Thi Cuc, a 32-year-old mother who was in her seventh week of pregnancy, was advised to stay in the medical center of Tan Phuoc District since she was at risk of miscarriage.

Two days later, prior to her discharge, doctors prescribed her Miprotone, a type of embryo-nourishing medication.

But a staff member at the dispensary provided her with Misoprostol, used for abortion purposes, after discovering that the embryo-nourishing medication was out of stock.

Later in the day Cuc was rushed back to the center after bleeding from the consumption of two Misoprostol pills.

As doctors at the center said they needed to continue watching her conditions, the family immediately took her to the Tien Giang Gynecological Hospital, where they were told the fetus had died from abortion medicine.

It was discovered later that on March 9, besides Cuc, two other pregnant patients at Tan Phuoc medical center were also mistakenly given Misoprostol. One of them had yet to use it, while the other safely received urgent treatment after the consumption.

A report by the medical center admitted that some of its staff members have failed to follow the regulations on checking and reviewing in terms of drug prescription and dispensing.

The report also said that a piece of software from the center had not been updated on medication information.

Le Van Duc, the center’s director, supposed that the program and the resemblance in name between Misoprostol and Misoprostol were to blame.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Health have ordered the Tien Giang health department to verify the incident and promptly submitted a report to it by 5:00 pm this Thursday.

The ministry also required staff members implicated in the case to be honest in providing information and the medical center to punish those who are responsible without leniency.

In January a pregnancy woman in the south-central province Quang Ngai also lost her six-week-old fetus after a midwife mistakenly gave her an abortion pill instead of pregnancy support drugs.

Subscribers shocked to see foreign channels removed from Vietnam cable TVs

They have been replaced by new channels tailored for the Vietnamese audience

By Tuan Son / Tuoi Tre News April 3, 2018, 20:23 GMT+7

163354

A wide range of popular foreign channels such as HBO, Discovery, AXN and Disney have been removed from two Vietnamese cable providers, angering subscribers, particularly those who already paid for year-long subscription.

The change took effect on Sunday, when subscribers of both VTVCab and its partner NextTV, a cable TV service by military-run telecom giant Viettel, complained that they were unable to find their favorite channels.

“I was confused at first as to why HBO was replaced with Box Movie, Cinemax became Hollywood Classics, and AXN turned into Blue Ant Entertainment,” said Phuong, a NextTV subscriber from Hanoi.

Phuong said she had not been made aware of the change and had no need for the new choices of channels.

Among the list of foreign channels removed from VTVCab and NextTV services are Animal Planet, Discovery, National Geographic, BBC Earth, Disney Channel, Star Movie, HBO, Cartoon Network and other sports channels, according to customers.

“When I turned on my TV on Sunday, [these channels] were all gone with no prior announcement,” said Tuan, a VTVCab subscriber from Hanoi.

Some customers felt they had been ‘deceived’ by the cable TV providers, as they had paid for a whole year of subscription in advance and would not be able to immediately stop using the services.

VTVCab: Be patient!

VTVCab general director Bui Huy Nam told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper the change had been announced multiple times since March 20, through different means such as on social media, online portals and on its TV channels.

“We didn’t make the announcement through text messages and email because not many of our customers subscribe to our email newsletter and the number of messages allowed to be sent a day is also limited,” Nam explained.

“In addition, some customers tend to ignore our texts thinking they are spam,” he added.

The replacement of the foreign channels with new ones was to “offer subscribers new choices” in the context that all cable TV services in Vietnam were offering essentially the same variety of channels, a VTVCab representative told Tuoi Tre.

“Moreover, foreign cable TVs always make use of this fact to force local providers to obtain broadcasting rights at a high price, knowing we had no other options,” the representative explained.

Such popular channels do not allow the streaming of their programs on mobile devices and through over the top (OTT) distribution, which limits VTVCab’s expansion to streaming platforms.

The change would allow VTVCab and NextTV subscribers to watch their favorite channels on the go, an entirely free add-on service that will become available in May, the representative said.

The new movie channels are also promised to offer Vietnamese viewers a much wider choice of box office hits, with at least twice the number of new movies becoming available each year compared to HBO or Cinemax, according to VTVCab.

“Subscribers should understand that we are watching the content of a channel, not its logo,” the VTVCab representative said.

“I think our customers should be more patient with the change. If they experience the new channels long enough, I believe they will start to see their appeal over the old ones.”

Police probe armed street brawl in southern Vietnam

A CCTV footage of the fight, which looks as if it is taken from an action movie, went viral on social media on Sunday

By Duy Khang / Tuoi Tre News April 3, 2018, 13:56 GMT+7

163355

Police are investigating a street brawl involving rubber bullet guns and machetes between two groups of men in the southern Vietnamese province of Dong Nai, with one side claiming they were attacked out of a ‘good deed misunderstood.’

A CCTV footage of the fight, which looks as if it is taken from an action movie, went viral on social media on Sunday, with police in Nhon Trach District confirming they had summoned individuals involved in the physical confrontation for investigation on Monday.

The 20-second video showed that members of Ngoc’s gang were swinging their machetes at the security guards, before the latter fired their guns to chase them away.

The incident took place along the Provincial Highway 25C at around 3:30 pm on Sunday, between members of the D.A Security Service Company and a gang led by a man named Ngoc, aka Ngoc “scar,” who has been on the run since.

The group of security guards was armed with rubber bullet guns and pepper spray, while Ngoc’s team was wielding machetes.

Nguyen Huu Nghia, a security guard from D.A Company, had his right eye seriously injured and is being treated at a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnamese woman fatally stabs self after quarrel at embassy in Malaysia

She yelled and cursed at the embassy employees before repeatedly stabbing herself in the chest

By Son Luong / Tuoi Tre News April 3, 2018, 10:01 GMT+7

A Vietnamese woman stabbed herself to death right after apparently having a row with the staff at her country’s embassy in Malaysia on Monday.

The woman, Tran Thi Mai, and a male companion went to the Vietnamese Embassy in Kuala Lumpur to complete some travel paperwork before the dispute began, a source with knowledge of the matter told a Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporter in Malaysia on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old Vietnamese then raised her voice and started quarreling with the embassy staff at the reception area at around 11:30 am on Monday, according to the source.

Mai eventually appeared to lose control of herself when she shouted more aggressively and took out a knife, giving herself multiple stabs.

“She yelled and cursed at the embassy employees before repeatedly stabbing herself in the chest,” the source told Tuoi Tre.

The man who accompanied Mai to the embassy immediately took her to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, but she succumbed to her severe injuries.

The Vietnamese embassy has notified Malaysian police of the incident.

Police officers have been dispatched to the scene for investigation.

Errrm not the same;) every time you top up 20k or 50k it will only extend your expiry to about 2 weeks, and the problem I will have is that I will not used up that 50k for another 2 months since I mainly use data only even for calls, so I will not top up on my every trip as not necessary and no point to top up just to extend the expiry so it is still cheaper to buy extended expiry in the long run

Technically in my humble opinion may be 2 different things although seems to be inter-related ;)

This 5G may potentially replace the backend between the provider and homes/establishments instead of the fibre required to be install now, but most homes/establishments may still have a central router to transmit wifi to share instead of everybody having their own 5G data line as it is just not economically viable

Moreover I believe most people will rather sit in a cafe or business establishment that provides free wifi instead of using their own data plan tio bo (aka leech :D)????

Vietnamese phone users hung up about being forced to send selfie profiles to providers

By Staff reporters April 11, 2018 | 07:52 am GMT+7

The unprecedented requirement has raised network security concerns about data safety.

Vietnamese mobile owners are being asked via text messages to submit profile photos to their network providers, something they never needed to do before.

The request follows a decree issued by the Ministry of Information and Communications which requires subscribers to provide photographic proof of their identities.

The government claims this will result in better control of network subscribers and prevent the abundance of fake SIM cards in Vietnam.

However, the new regulation has caused public uproar over data security concerns and for being too time consuming.

“Even registering ownership of a car or property doesn’t require photos,” said Do Thi Hoa, one user who received the message. However, she said she intended to submit her photo before the April 24 deadline because she didn't want to get cut off.

Subscribers are required to submit their photos either to a local network agent or upload them directly via a network app within the next two weeks. One network is even offering to make home visits for senior citizens who are not familiar with technology.

The network providers have guaranteed their customers’ personal information will be in good hands.

“Photos and other private information will be archived in our database and will only be used to manage subscribers as stated by law,” said a representative from MobiFone, one of the largest network providers in Vietnam.

However, experts believe the regulation has loopholes that could be taken advantage of. A photo taken by a customer and sent to a network provider cannot be authenticated, said Vu Tien Vinh, a lawyer.

The images could also slip through the network security holes, a scenario in which the responsibility of the network provider has not yet been clearly defined, Vinh added.

The lawyer said he didn’t think that photos would help the government to control subscribers as all administrative procedures already require photo ID. He said the regulation should be scrapped to reduce the administrative burden it places on the public.

Travelers name Vietnam Airlines among best carriers in Asia

By Hoai Sa April 11, 2018 | 10:45 am GMT+7

164567

The national flag carrier has seen service improvements translate into record profits.

National carrier Vietnam Airlines has been named one of the top airlines in Asia by American review website TripAdvisor.

The airline was rated among 11 best major airlines in the region, according to the 2018 Traveler's Choice Awards, which collects travelers' ratings from the past year of airlines' legroom, customer service, cleanliness, food and beverage, seat comfort, value for money, check-in and boarding, and in-flight entertainment.

"Flight was smooth and the captain kept us informed the whole way. Food was above average," a traveler said on TripAdvisor.

Founded in 1956, Vietnam Airlines operates 93 planes, including the new top-end Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and long-haul Airbus 350-900.

The company reported profit of VND313 billion ($13.7 million) and a turnover of VND 21.3 trillion ($934.7 million) from the fourth quarter of 2017, a 26.8 percent increase from the same period the previous year.

While new to TripAdvisor’s awards, Vietnam Airlines has been a frequent winner of international accolades.

Just last year, the World Travel Awards, often dubbed ‘the tourism Oscars’, named it the world’s leading airline in terms of culture and premium economy class.

British airline and airport reviewer Skytrax has also given the carrier a 4 star rating for the second time in a row.

Singapore Airlines was voted Asia's best major airline while India's Vistara named the best regional airline and IndiGo the best low-cost airline.

The Singapore carrier was also hailed the world's best carrier, followed by Air New Zealand and Emirates.

Sounds logical but unfortunately totally wrong analogy ;)

1st Point ==> Penny-wise pound foolish means trying to save a few cents now but may lose out more as a whole or in the long run, which in this case in theory I am actually paying more than you based on per-day basis, if I multiply 8K vnd x 30 days, then I would be actually paying much more than your 70k vnd 30days package.

2nd Point ==> The reason I picked daily rates is based on practicality since I only stay a few days each time so no point to subscribe to an auto-renewal 30 days package. When I choose daily package it does not means that I will be surfing at a lower speed or lousier network than your 30 days package, so how could I lose out as a whole or in the long run leh????

3rd Point ==> a good example would be most people trying to get better exchange rates but are staying at far-flung districts taking a taxi all the way down to D1 or Ben Thanh just to get maybe 20k or 30k more than if they had change in their vicinity, but unfortunately their cab fare would be much more than that 20k or 30k more, this is what I would have termed penny wise pound foolish  (of cos with the exception if they changing a humongous sum rather than the average S$1K)

Vietnamese investors fall for $650 mln cryptocurrency scam

By Staff reporters April 12, 2018 | 07:42 am GMT+7

164765

Investors are demanding their money back, but the company's leaders are nowhere to be found.

A Vietnamese IT firm has come under fire from investors who claim it scammed VND15 trillion ($650 mln) from them in a cryptocurrency ponzi scheme.

Dozens of people descended on the headquarters of Modern Tech in Ho Chi Minh City's District 1 on Sunday demanding refunds from the company for the cryptocurrencies it claimed to represent.

Victims claimed to have been invited to various conferences held by Modern Tech as it was attempting to mobilize capital.

Speakers at these conferences claimed to be successful businesspeople and encouraged participants to invest in the company's cryptocurrencies, including iFan and Pincoin.

The company claimed the two cryptocurrencies had been established in Singapore and Dubai respectively, which contradicts data from analytics website SimilarWeb that says that 91 percent of visitors to iFan.io, the main website for the currency, are from Vietnam.

iFan, as explained on its website, is a platform used in show business to provide artists with a more effective way of connecting with their fans so they buy songs and concert tickets using iFan coins.

According to the disgruntled investors, the virtual currency had operated in a similar way to a multi-level business model, or pyramid platform. Modern Tech guaranteed that the lowest interest they would receive would be 48 percent per month, with a payback period of less than four months. In addition, if investors could find a new entrant, they would receive an additional 8 percent.

In the beginning, Modern Tech paid investors via bank transfers. However, it quickly switched to using its virtual currency, while at the same time increasing its minimum investment limit, forcing investors to pour more money in.

At the end of 2017, interest payments started to come in late, according to Quang, who claimed to have invested a total of VND130 million ($5,733) in iFan coins. When Quang raised the question in a private chat group of iFan investors, he was immediately removed with an offer of about VND10 million in compensation, just 7.6 percent of what he had invested.

Quang is among a small group of victims trying to create a public protest to demand a refund.

However, most victims are silently accepting the fact that their money has gone.

As stated on iFan’s website: “The token provided by this website carries a high level of risk and can result in the loss of all your funds.”

The alleged $650 million loss is 150 times larger than Modern Tech’s initial equity of $4.4 million invested by a group of only eight people who founded the company in October 2017.

Each investor holds between a 12 and 15 percent share in the company, which has only 9 staff members, according to Ho Chi Minh City's tax authorities.

Modern Tech's legal representative has been named as Ho Xuan Van, born in 1988.

However, the company’s phone number was answered by a woman, who claimed to be hired by Modern Tech for a few million VND to represent the company and establish the business.

A trip to Modern Tech’s supposed offices in Ho Chi Minh City also turned out to be in vain, as the building's management said the space had been empty since the lease was signed.

Despite multiple requests from the media in recent days, Modern Tech representatives have not responded to the accusations, and its founders have remained off the radar.

As cryptocurrency is illegal in Vietnam, Le Thanh Liem, vice chairman of Ho Chi Minh City, has asked the city's police to launch an investigation.

13 percent of Vietnamese flights cancelled, delayed in Q1: report

By Dy Khoa April 12, 2018 | 12:32 pm GMT+7

164767

Late arrivals have been blamed as the main reason for the rising number of delays compared to last year.

Approximately 10,000 flight cancellations and delays by Vietnamese airlines were recorded in the first three months of 2018, according to a new report released last week by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam.

The figure accounts for 13.5 percent of the total flights operated by the country's four domestic airlines, an increase of 1 percentage point from a year ago.

Among them, Jetstar Pacific registered the worst performance with 21.1 percent of its flights delayed, albeit achieving a significant reduction from 30 percent in the first three months of 2017.

VASCO was credited as the best performer of the quarter, with only 2.3 percent of its flights delayed, while another 2 percent were cancelled.

Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air saw 10 and 16.6 percent of their flights running off schedule respectively. The figures represent 1.4 and 3.9 percent hikes compared to the same period last year.

The report said that late arrivals were the primary cause of delays, as they affected 65.8 percent of Vietnamese flights.

Unfavorable weather and technical difficulties were cited as the main excuse for cancellations, as well as operational and commercial issues.

According to the report, total flight growth rose 10 percent year-on-year. Vietjet Air made the most of the country's air travel boom with a 26.6 percent rise in departures from the first quarter last year.

Flight delays and cancellations have left passengers unsatisfied over the years. In September 2017, the Ministry of Transport ruled that airlines must provide accommodation for passengers if they are delayed by more than six hours.

Vietnam has seen a recent boom in air travel. The country served more than 94 million air passengers in 2017, a 16 percent increase from the previous year.

How two Vietnamese jackpot winners find themselves in tragedy

The winners were catapulted from riches to rags. One lost his job and house, while the other ended up suing her daughter

By Thai Xuan / Tuoi Tre News Monday, April 16, 2018, 21:00 GMT+7

165315

A middle-aged man and a woman in advanced years are facing a bitter divisive plight related to their possessions and people once close to them after they won a lottery jackpot in Vietnam.

Nguyen T., a 48-year-old resident in Tien Giang Province, had his life trajectory veered unpredictably when he received a lottery windfall valued at over VND11 billion (US$4.8 million).

He contributed a portion of the winnings to a charitable foundation, put some in a bank, spent VND2.7 billion ($1.2 million) purchasing a house, and gave VND1.5 billion ($66,000) to his second girlfriend.

He said that problems occurred when his ex-girlfriend found he and the new lover had a baby – a pre-marriage result treated with social stigma in Vietnam – and was bent on depriving him of what he had.

The former girlfriend forced him to commit himself to selling the house to her and hand her the accommodation’s ownership papers for safe keeping, in order to forestall his secret attempt to give the building to the new girlfriend.

T. was also coerced to sign a document which stated that he owed the first girlfriend VND800 million ($35,000) – the money he borrowed from her when they were still on good terms.

He acquiesced for fear that his second love affair came to light.

But the woman sued him for the debt and house after he rejected her requirement that he disown the born-out-of-wedlock baby and its mother.

He decided to stop serving as a local police chief after the woman reported his affair to the department where he worked.

In legal proceedings that lasted four years, the first girlfriend claimed no knowledge of a romantic relationship with T., and said T. used the money she loaned to him to buy the house, a statement that T. contradicted.

The judge concluded that he was indebted to the woman, based on a misleading document from the bank in which he mistakenly was categorized as borrowing a sum of money from the institution to purchase the house.

The building was auctioned to pay the debt to the ex-girlfriend.

“I used to have a job, a house, a large amount of money that everyone would crave. But now I’ve lost my shirt. I can’t imagine I’m driven into a corner like this,” he said.

“During the past few years, I and my family have experienced untold suffering in honor and dignity. We’ve felt mentally fatigued.”

Mother-daughter affection turns hatred

Pham Thi D., residing in Dong Thap Province in the Mekong Delta, entrusted the jackpot payout of VND1.5 billion ($66,000) to her fifth daughter, who she believed would take care of her during the rest of her life in her house.

D. is a poor 70-year-old widow of eight children, who are adults only able to do manual jobs as they have no decent formal education.

She asked the daughter to spend part of the money on house repairs and divide the rest amongst her siblings but the child did not obey her.

“I’ve used all your winnings already. Now mortgage the house so that I have some seed money for business, won’t you?” said the daughter.

D. dismissed the suggestion flat-out but later felt shocked to know that the house had been made to be in the child’s name.

A bank announced it would take possession of the house since the daughter owed it an outstanding debt, prompting D. to borrow money to solve the issue.

The mother was forced to file a lawsuit against her daughter, asking the court to invalidate the house’s papers showing the child was the owner.

They have been in litigation over the past four years.

“Very much to my regret, I gave all the big money to her. Now the family is falling apart,” D. said.

Vietnam’s 'crazy house' named among world’s 'coolest' buildings

By Quy Nguyen April 18, 2018 | 04:01 pm GMT+7

165622

Lonely Planet has named the bizarre guesthouse alongside the likes of the Taj Mahal and Sydney Opera House.

U.K. travel magazine Lonely Planet has unveiled its list of the 120 most breathtaking human constructions on Earth, and a bizarre building in Vietnam has made the list.

The magazine's new "A Spotter's Guide to Amazing Architecture" introduces the world's "coolest" cosntructions and where to see them.

Hang Nga Guesthouse, dubbed the "Crazy House" in the Central Highlands town Da Lat, has been recognized for its extraordinary exterior which resembles a monstrous banyan tree.

Around one kilometer from the center of Da Lat, the guesthouse was officially opened in 1990, and has been compared to the amazing architecture of world-acclaimed constructions such as the Salvador Dalí Museum and Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The design by Vietnamese architect Dang Viet Nga was inspired by the poetic natural scenery of the dreamy city and the architectural works of Catalan master Antoni Gaud.

Once forgotten, it has now emerged as one of the most popular tourist attractions in Vietnam’s city of love, where visitors have to pay for VND40,000 ($1.76) for an entrance ticket to satisfy their curiosity.

165623

Lonely Planet list also includes the Taj Mahal (India), Sydney Opera House (Australia), St Basil's Cathedral (Russia), Pena Palace (Portugal) and Lincoln Cathedral (U.K.)

This is not the first time the guesthouse has earned global plaudits.

The U.K.-based travel magazine last year hailed Vietnam’s astonishing building as a secret marvel, saying “Crazy House is different from every angle: on one side, warped walls seem menacing and windows glare like eye sockets; from another, traditional Vietnamese designs adorn the eaves.”

In 2016, the leading U.S. architecture website Archdaily included Hang Nga on its list of the world’s most unusual buildings.

My kakis went this morning to the best Hair Salon shop around Ben Thanh.

VND350K + 500K tip.

They expect above VND400K tip if clean body massage is included.
Truly Shocking Asia!

That is about $20USD tip for a $15USD hair cut/massage. (FYI, they say 500k tip but i think you can pay 300k, they always try to get more from you)

Nowhere even in the US or Europe you expeted to tip more than the base price of a service. Confrim Vietnam Salon is place looking to recruit Robert Chop Suey types!

In Vietnam, a mega casino rises with the help of a Macau junket company

By Reuters April 20, 2018 | 02:08 pm GMT+7

165857

The $4 billion Hoiana project is expected to extend across almost 1,000 hectares.

Along a three-kilometer (2-mile) stretch of coastline in central Vietnam, construction cranes are digging up mounds of sand and rubble where the country’s biggest casino is set to open next year.

When completed, the $4 billion Hoiana project will extend across almost 1,000 hectares, and also include shops, restaurants, golf courses and water parks.

Driving the project is Suncity Group Holdings Ltd (1383.HK), which has made billions luring high-rollers – mainly from China - to the baccarat tables in the Chinese territory of Macau.

Vietnam is betting big on developing a gambling industry, targeting the Chinese tourists who have been flocking to the country in recent years.

In addition to Hoiana, two other casinos, one in Van Don in the northern province of Quang Ninh, and one on Phu Quoc island in the south, are also under construction. The two projects will be part of a pilot program that would allow Vietnamese citizens to gamble at casinos for the first time.

Hoiana will be the first casino owned by SunCity, which will have a one-third stake in the project. VinaCapital, a Vietnamese investment management and real estate firm, and the Hong Kong-based VMS Investment Group will also have similar-sized stakes.

“The government really wishes to bring tourism here,” said Henry Tam, project director of Hoi An South Development, the local company which is building Hoiana. He added that development of the area would also include a school and sports stadium for local residents.

“This is a 15-20 year project,” he said. “The area is four times the size of Macau’s Cotai strip.”

The Hoiana project comes with challenges. Local Vietnamese will not be allowed to gamble at the casino and operations are subject to Vietnam’s uncertain regulatory environment.

Competition around Asia is also heating up, with Macau, the world’s largest gambling center, building more resorts, and South Korea and the Philippines expanding their casino footprints. Other countries like Singapore also compete in the sector.

Ho Tram, a multi-billion dollar casino project located a two-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City, had construction delays and financing problems before it opened in 2013. The casino - which is owned by Asian Coast Development, headed by the hedge fund manager Philip Falcone - has struggled to attract foreign gamblers to its remote location.

There are fewer than 10 casinos in Vietnam, mostly smaller ones outside major cities. At present, only foreign passport holders can enter and gamble in them.

Suncity executives are optimistic for Hoiana, citing strong government backing, local support through VinaCapital and large-scale infrastructure works like the four-lane highway that will connect it to Danang’s international airport 40 kilometers away.

And they are pinning their hopes on Chinese tourists. In 2017, Vietnam welcomed four million Chinese visitors, up 49 percent from the previous year.

The first phase of the project, which includes a 140-table casino and a golf course, is due to open in 2019. The second phase, which will add a lagoon, water park, second golf course, entertainment village and four more beach resorts, is slated to open by 2023.

Anthony Chiu, Suncity’s chief financial officer, said the cost of the first phase was $650 million, of which VinaCapital, Suncity and VMS have put in around $70 million each, with the rest coming from bank financing.

Companies associated with Chow Tai Fook Enterprises, headed by the Hong Kong billionaire Henry Cheng, are building 100 villas and a 1,176-room hotel as part of the first phase.

In addition to Hoiana, Suncity has also signed a management service agreement for the Van Don project in the north.

Van Don is scheduled to open in 2019 according to Suncity but details are scarce on the nature of the development. Foreign investors are required to invest over $2 billion in order to qualify for casino licenses.

Las Vegas operators including Las Vegas Sands (LVS.N) have been interested in setting up in Vietnam for several years. But Sands has said it would only invest in a casino if locals were allowed to gamble there.

Casino expansion

For Suncity, the stakes are high in Hoiana.

Booming gambling revenues in Macau have created enormous wealth for junket operators like Suncity, who bring in players from mainland China and collect their debts.

But as tighter regulatory controls and a lack of space crimps further development in Macau, junkets have been trying to expand overseas.

Their role remains critical for Asian casinos eager to attract Chinese players, as gambling debts are not legally enforceable in China.

Suncity is responsible for all the casino operations in Hoiana, including bringing in VIP players.

Macau’s government will also soon be deciding on whether to allow new contenders to set up casinos in the glittering enclave once the six existing licenses start to expire from 2020.

Suncity’s 34 percent stake in Hoiana will help position it as a contender for a casino license in Macau, said Grant Govertsen, an analyst at Union Gaming in Macau.

Suncity’s executive director, Andrew Lo, said Hoiana also gave the company an opportunity to be in control of an operation rather than just a service provider.

“I think it’s a very good investment,” he said. “Our marketing strategy is that we will become the entertainment hub of the Danang and Hoi An area.”

Expats confused over Vietnam’s profile picture requirement for phone users

By Dat Nguyen April 22, 2018 | 01:20 pm GMT+7

166279

Some have no idea about the requirement, others find it invasive while network providers can’t guarantee help in English.

Expats are having issues with Vietnam’s new regulation which asks phone users to submit a profile picture to their network provider.

The Ministry of Information and Communications requires mobile subscribers to provide photographic proof of their identities before April 24, or they will be locked out of their network.

Ryan, 28, is a Briton working in Hanoi. He had no ideas about the new regulation until VnExpress International contacted him because the profile photo request was sent to his phone in Vietnamese.

“I've never had to do this in the U.K. or in any other countries I've travelled through,” Ryan said, adding that he finds the requirement “invasive”.

In light of recent data breaches by companies as large as Facebook, Ryan is concerned that his information could fall into the wrong hands. “I don’t know if I could trust my network provider with my information,” he said.

The government claims the requirement will result in better control of network subscribers and prevent spam accounts.

But while network providers claim user data will only be used to manage subscribers as stated by law, experts believe the regulation has loopholes that could be taken advantage of.

The images could slip through the network security holes, a scenario in which the responsibility of the network provider has not yet been clearly defined, said lawyer Vu Tien Vinh.

A photo taken by a customer and sent to a network provider cannot be authenticated, Vinh added.

Having been to many Asian countries, Mark from Canada finds the regulation odd. “Why would a phone company need my photo?” he said.

Ryan and Mark are not the only expats who are having issues with the regulation. Many foreigners are also confused as local mobile operators don’t seem to provide the assistance they need.

On Saturday, customer service centers of all major network providers were packed with customers coming in to have their photos taken.

Amid the chaos, an employee of Vietnam’s largest network Viettel said foreigners need to bring in their passport but he could not guarantee there would be anyone who speaks English available to help.

The same situation was recorded at Vinaphone and Mobiphone customer service centers. But a Vinaphone employee suggested that expats could take a photo of their passport and submit it to the company's website.

Vietnam has 118.7 million mobile subscriptions, according to official data and there are 82,000 foreigners living and working in the country. As of last week, at least 38 million mobile phone users have not provided adequate personal information to network providers, said Nguyen Duc Trung, a senior telecommunications official at the Ministry of Information and Communications, as cited by Tuoi Tre.

Mark is one of them. The 35-year-old is not planning to do anything yet. “I’ll see if they actually lock my account,” he said.

Ferries to Nam Du Islands in Vietnam no longer ‘sold out forever’

Five held after armed gang fight in Ho Chi Minh City

Initial information showed that the fight involved gang members from the northern city of Hai Phong

By Duy Khang / Tuoi Tre News Monday, April 23, 2018, 10:31 GMT+7

166303

An armed street brawl broke out between two gangs in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday, causing chaos and frightening local residents.

Five suspects have been held for investigation into the violent confrontation that happened along the section of Truong Sa Street near Le Van Sy Bridge in District 3 at around 5:00 pm, local police confirmed later the same day.

The armed fight involved more than 20 masked men, apparently members of two different gangs, who fought each other using knives and machetes.

Some of the men were also seen joining in the brawl with what appeared to be a gun, according to eyewitnesses.

Many commuters on the street had to change their direction after seeing the fight, whereas panicked locals in the neighborhood immediately locked their doors for their own safety.

Some witnesses managed to take photos of the confrontation and posted them on social media.

Eyewitnesses also said some of the gang members were injured after the fight.

Police officers later arrived at the scene to resolve the situation, arresting five suspects and gathering statements from local residents.

Initial information showed that the fight involved gang members from the northern city of Hai Phong.

Vietnam's pristine bay named among best places to visit in May

By Nguyen Quy April 23, 2018 | 01:33 pm GMT+7

166312

Mesmerizing beaches and luxury resorts make a perfect combination for Cam Ranh, according Condé Nast Traveler.

If you are struggling with travel ideas for the summer, Vietnam can offer some help.

The country's deep-water Cam Ranh Bay, with its budding beach tourism, has been named among the world’s seven best destinations for May by top travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler.

Cam Ranh, an hour south of its much busier sister Nha Trang in the central province of Khanh Hoa, boasts pristine and mesmerizing beaches that have yet to be marred by human hands. It's where one can find "the lifetime fascination" in the deep waters, the U.S.-based magazine said.

Luxury facilities such as a top-tier golf course and beachfront resorts should be part of the package, it said.

Cam Ranh international airport is expected to unveil a new international terminal to bring in more overseas visitors to the country this May.

The Condé Nast list also includes Paris, Sicily and Puglia of Italy, Portugal’s remote Azores islands, Cannes and Monte Carlo, San Francisco and Louisville.

International visitor arrivals in Vietnam in the first quarter of this year jumped 30.9 percent from a year ago to 4.2 million.

The country expects to receive 15-17 million foreign arrivals this year.

The APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) scheme is designed to facilitate the travel of business persons between the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies. The ABTC is a multiple-journey-visa where cardholders enjoy visa free entry and expedited immigration clearance through designated ABTC lanes in ABTC participating economies.
