What I find great about Chang Jiang G1 is their individual portions of frog porridge, priced at an unbelievable $5! Their gravy was dark and spicy, and stirred into their plain porridge, was truly a delight to eat.

You’d expect a stingy amount of frog for such a pricetag, but Chang Jiang G1 was extremely generous — I found 4 frog legs in my bowl and a number of other froggy parts. This was the most affordable frog porridge I found.

Eminent occupies a special spot in my heart, having been the stall that served me my very first bowl of frog porridge when I was little. I love that Eminent’s frog porridge is consistently on point, delivering velvety porridge and tender frog meat every single time I’ve visited.

What’s more, their porridge is also relatively affordable as they run a Buy Two Get One Free promotion that increases with the number of frogs you buy.

Eminent also has a number of unique offerings that can only be found here, such as Special Frog with Garlic and White Pepper and Homemade Chilli Frog (both $8/$16/$22). Most of the diners at this coffeeshop will either be eating the Hokkien mee or the ocean curry fish head. I tried the Claypot version for 2 which costs $10, it comes with claims, oysters (to replace roasted meat) prawns and sotong. Those who dare to indulge should ask for extra fries pork lard also. The chili is really good, but you have to ask for more, the standard saucer which is prepared for self service has only a tiny portion of the chili given, and the owner keeps the chili out of self service reach, but go ahead and ask for more, it's worth the stare given :) For $10 Claypot version I must say they are generous with the ingredients. Taste wise though I wouldn't say it's much nicer than the non Claypot version, but it's sure enough to make me want to come back again next time.

Fortunately, Mr Frankie Gwee (‘Ah How’), the owner of Outram Park Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh, has recently set up a Bak Kut Teh restaurant in Tiong Bahru, bringing the same tantalizing Pork Ribs Soup to more people. Nay, it’s even better since he is personally managing the restaurant.

The new establishment goes by the name《团缘》 or ‘Tuan Yuan Pork Ribs Soup’. Before you raise issues with the apparent mistake in the Chinese characters: No, their Chinese name is not an error but a clever pun on words, with a deeper significance.

The phrase 团缘 (Tuan Yuan) reads like ‘Reunion 团圆’, because their new restaurant stands in the exact location of Mr Gwee’s old home more than 40 years ago. BAKE Cheese Tarts From Hokkaido Has Landed in Singapore – Best Cheese Tarts Ever

I’m pretty sure by now most of you have caught news of Hokkaido’s famed cheese tart, BAKE, opening up a store in Singapore. Bless these beautiful souls for bringing in such goodness to us. No more watching countless tempting videos of it online and desperately clinging to a wishing bone, hoping it will magically surface in front of us.

Come this 29 April 2016, BAKE’s SouthEast Asia flagship store will officially open, at ION Orchard. It will retail at $3.50 per tart, $19.50 per box of six tarts. The tarts will still stay true to all its ingredients from Hokkaido and it will be pre-made in their Japan store in Kinotoya, Hokkaido before sending out the cheese tarts everywhere.

A wonderful cafe that’s recently upped their menu ante, Cheng’s Gourmet Food Bar serves breakfast food till 5pm daily amongst other wonderful gourmet food.

However, they do understand the power of breakfast foods and its irresistibility, so they’ve made an exception. They allow customers to request for breakfast foods after hours, if and only if, there aren’t many customers around.

The most outstanding element about their Big Breakfast ($18.90) was that on top of the usual eggs, sausages, bacon etc., they added caramelised watermelon. It was literally cooked watermelon, and was a mind-boggling experience for me because who eats warm watermelon?? Strangely, it worked. The watermelon balances out the saltiness of bacon and ties the breakfast together nicely.

Manned and spearheaded by a thirty-year-old second generation young chap, Chai Chee Pork Porridge has a pretty long history of establishment. The signature pork porridge ($3 + $0.50 for egg) continues to be the gem of the stall that generates long queues during the peak dinner period.

The sweet pork meat pieces have a hidden peppery taste. Interview with the stall owner explained the evidence of effort put into marination, i.e. a secret recipe passed down the generation.

I ordered the pork porridge with egg — a recommended choice, as the egg serves as an added fragrance to the dish. The entire dish is a good blend of flavours, contributed by the different flavours of various ingredients.

Just had this lor mee at North Bridge Road Market.
Ordered the $6 bowl as I was tempted by the display of ingredients.
Very rich indeed in terms of ingredients. Ngoh Hiang, pork belly, mini pork ribs, braised egg, fried fish bits, fried fish skin and a generous piece of fried fish head.
The gravy is thick and savoury, my favourite type of lor mee.

According to Wikipedia, this dish has minced meat, sardines, egg and chopped onions in it and it is fried on a frying pan before being placed into the cavity of a baguette halved lengthwise. Can you guess what local food this is?

It’s kentang ball - which is a novelty for me. It had mashed potato about the size of a cricket ball filled with minced beef inside. The whole thing was deep fried in a batter and then served in a bowl of spicy chicken soup. Imagine eating mashed potato with minced beef and essentially you have it. Certainly worth a try if you haven't had it before.
