Jiu Jiang Roasted Meat 九江烧腊

2Address - #01-17 Ghim Moh Market and Food Centre, 20 Ghim Moh Road, 270020
Opening Hours
Mon - Tue: 10:00 - 15:00
Thu - Sun: 10:00 - 15:00
Closed: Wed

Price from $3

The roast duck 烧鸭 and the chewy char siew 叉烧 are really good even when left to cool. No kidding. I bought a take-away duck drum with char siew rice for $8 (funny enough if you pack separate the meat from the rice will be $15 because they will presume you want 1/4 duck with char siew and rice)
Anyway, be prepared to queue 20-30 min for it.
Will return to eat there with the roast pork aka sio bak 烧肉 next time and take nicer pictures.
Chilli sauce given is the sour sweet type. I know some folks that do not like this kind of chilli sauce. If you like, you can also ask for the sweet sauce to go with the rice.

I eat at this stall many times due to my previous office near there. The only attraction is their price. It is cheap, order siu fo only $3 but taste not fantastic.
Read one review their bu jian tian is delicious, order a portion to try but disappointed. Their bu jian tian not even come close to the mouth-watering ban fei shou char siew from hai wai tian.

Xing Li Cooked Food 兴利熟食

51 Old Airport Road #01-28 Old Airport Road Food Centre
Singapore 390051
Opens 1pm till 10pm or when sold out
Price from $4

While Jalan Berseh has Lim's Fried Oyster, Old Airport Road has Xing Li Cooked Food Fried Oyster. Stall may look understated because it does not flash any accolades or celebrity pictures but you may not want to underestimate the quality orh luak.
Problem is the queue (wait is about 20min even at 9pm) partly because of its following and partly because the one-man-show uncle really takes pride (and time) in making a good oyster omelette. He will make in batches of about 4 plates and he will make sure the eggs and starch are blended and fried nicely before loading on the spring onions and oysters. This is not the super crispy type fried egg omelette.
The vinegar chilli sauce is a nice complement.

Jia Dong Shu Shi

#02-17 Dunman Road Food Centre, 271 Onan Road, 424768

#02-17 Dunman Road Food Centre, 271 Onan Road, 424768

Jia Dong Shu Shi | This #popiah stall — which started in the early 70s — used to peddle their wares outside the old Palace Theatre cinema along East Coast Road until they moved into Dunman Food Centre in the late 1970s.

The stall is now run by Kway Kim Seng who took over from his father and you can tell that every ingredient at this stall’s popiah has been carefully considered. The bang kuang (jicama) filling has a soft stewy texture, the colour is darker and the taste more robust due to the addition of more tau cheo (preserved soy bean paste). The added prawns have a nice fleshy bounce and the lap cheong (#chinesesausage) is cut length-wise so that you get a piece of it with every bite. The omelette garnish is moist and cut thicker for a noticeable eggier taste. The crispy lard bits on top makes it a more indulgent mouthful. Two skins are used to keep the filling moist and intact. The only thing we would ask for is a little more garlic. Beyond that, I feel that this is one of the best street-side popiahs in Singapore.

Dragon City Claypot Frog

Address - #02-29/30 Dunman Food Centre, 271 Onan Road, 424768
Opening Hours
Daily: 16:00 - 01:30

When people mention frog leg porridge, everyone automatically thinks of #geylang as there are three famous stalls located there. For those who live east-side, this little stall in Dunman Food Centre serves up #frog leg porridge which is a little more acessible to get to than those in Geylang. Dragon City uses medium sized frogs from Malaysia and if you come early enough in the afternoon, you can see the staff skinning the frogs (not for the squeamish). The frog meat comes supremely soft and tender and even the meat from the drumstick section falls off easily. The not-too-sweet kung pao sauce (a Sichuan sauce with spicy and sweet flavours) comes thick, dark, saucy and intensely spicy. The taste is almost too overpowering but it balances well when you mix the gravy with the very thick plain porridge which has strong notes of ginger and spring onion.

Arguably the oldest eatery along Keong Saik Road, Kok Sen began more than 50 years ago as Kow Kee until Wong Kok Sen (now in his 60s) took over the business from his father in the 1980s. He renamed the restaurant and relocated the restaurant a few doors down to bigger premises. If you’re looking for subtle, cheng (clean) flavours, you won’t find it here. Food here is old school Cantonese tze char dishes done excellently with big bold flavours. Nowhere is this truer than their signature Big #prawns #horfun where they take a typical stock-based hor fun sauce and give it more oomph by adding chilli and hae bi hiam (dried shrimp sambal) into the mix.

This coffeeshop sells traditional Hainanese fare but what they’re most well-known for is the Soft Kaya Buns. Baked in-house, these buns boasts a crisp, light crust and a fluffy and super soft interior. A generous amount of kaya is spread on the soft buns, topped with a slab of savoury butter. We love the texture of the soft buns and the coconut-infused kaya enhanced the overall taste. Get the set ($3.70) which comes with an aromatic cup of kopi and two soft-boiled eggs to complete your breakfast!

Chicken rice steamboat at one of Singapore’s oldest restaurants
92293

Nothing unites Singaporeans more than our love for FOOD. Similarly, nothing divides us more than timeless debates between which hawker stall does our fave dish best. An obviously, Hainanese chicken rice is not spared from this dispute. So to shed some light on it, we decided to check out one of Singapore’s oldest Hainan restaurant, Yet Con, which serves not only chicken rice, but also chicken rice steamboat.

Chicken rice steamboat at Yet Con
92294
As there were only 2 waitresses, 1 chef behind the counter, 1 cashier and no menu, I was glad I already knew what they serve instead of having to ask. Things are pretty standard around here – when we walked in, we were asked, “How many?” then immediately seated with classic red bowls and chopsticks. Even before we’ve sat down, a waitress asked if we we here for Chicken Rice Steamboat ($12 per pax, minimum of 2 pax required). We nodded and she proceeded to ask if we wanted beef, but we opted for seafood.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when it came to a chicken rice steamboat, but what arrived on our table was a pot of hearty chicken broth with two seafood platters and a plate of vegetables.

The seafood platters held a lot more than they looked – fish slices, fish balls, prawns, vegetables, sliced squid and an egg. Although not the freshest range of seafood, it was a surprisingly generous amount to the point where we were unable to finish everything.
92304
We tasted the soup before throwing everything in, and were pleasantly surprised by a broth that wasn’t MSG-loaded. It was clear and reminded me of how my grandma would have cooked it. It got sweeter as we added more ingredients in, but the soup became increasingly salty towards the end of the meal. There’s free-flow soup too, which means you can take your time eating here.

For the rice, I liked how the grains were distinctively separate, but it did not strike me as being memorably fragrant; in fact, it’s probably less fragrant than what you’d get outside. However, its subtle taste turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it made a good complement to the rest of the ingredients.

Ambience at Yet Con
Walking in, I finally understood what others meant when they say time stands still at this place. It has no fancy decoration, except for a coin-operated telephone and abacus by the counter.
92311
Other than that, it was a room with pastel blue walls, terrazzo flooring and three rows of traditional marble top tables with wooden chairs. I know what you’re thinking, but don’t fret, despite the traditional blast-from-the-past setting, you’d be glad to know that it’s air-conditioned.

The verdict
While it’s not everyday that we see a chicken rice steamboat, the food at this 76-year-old restaurant holds true to its roots and does their food well in terms of authenticity, which might come off as too plain for what Singaporean taste buds are used to.

For those craving a variety, other items here include roast pork, Hainanese pork chops in sweet and sour sauce and Hainanese chap chye (mixed veg). Their group-friendly options and sharing plates are much more affordable and well-suited to larger groups, making this a good place to bring your family over for your next communal meal as you dig into this physical ode to the simpler days.

Rich and Good Cake Shop – This Is How They Roll!

Swiss roll fans definitely wouldn’t want to miss this. Or all pastry fans, for that matter. This little bakery has been raved about time and again by journalists and bloggers alike. Yet I find it absolutely necessary to blog about it at least once, in case some of you do not know of it. It is here where you might find the best Swiss rolls in Singapore.

And that’s the Rich and Good Cake Shop! That’s what they call themselves. My, rather ambitious aren’t they? This 14 year old bakery specialises in Swiss rolls, and has my Mom and I as die-hard fans! My bro would get these puffy and spongy pasteries for us each time he passes by Arab street.

92855
Kaya Swiss Roll
S$14 for a box of 2
Rating:
Not to be missed is the kaya (creamy coconut jam) Swiss roll. It’s the best-selling flavour. The creamy kaya filling tastes rich and fragrant, without being too sweet at the same time. Ahhh… Pure joy!

You know how you sometimes get that dry mouth feel after eating cake? You wouldn’t get that from eating the Swiss rolls here. They have such ample layers of moist filling that you would just keep eating more and more!

92854
Durian Swiss Roll
S$14 for a box of 2
Rating:
Durians, you either love ’em or hate ’em. I belong to the latter camp but the people I love love durians! I haven’t personally sampled the durian rolls but I know that durian fans would find these irresistable. Made with authentic D24 durians, you can actually see and taste the chunks of durian flesh within the rolls!

92853

One interesting thing about the Swiss rolls here is that they are sold in their whole, uncut forms. So for $12 to $14, you get two foot-long rolls of the delicious goodies! They come in long boxes coloured in a gentle shade of baby pink too. Sweet!

Here’s a complete list of the available flavours and their prices:

– Durian Swiss roll (S$14)
– Kaya Swiss roll (S$14)
– Mango Swiss roll (S$14)
– Green Tea Swiss roll (S$14)
– Orange Swiss roll (S$14)
– Strawberry Swiss roll (S$13)
– Blueberry Swiss roll (S$13)
– Coffee Swiss roll (S$12)
– Chocolate Swiss roll (S$12)

And that’s the Rich and Good Cake Shop! That’s what they call themselves. My, rather ambitious aren’t they? This 14 year old bakery specialises in Swiss rolls, and has my Mom and I as die-hard fans! My bro would get these puffy and spongy pasteries for us each time he passes by Arab street.

Ah Gong believes that we must support those stalls run by local people who can deliver good quality food at affordable prices . But Ah Gong also knows that cost of operating a stall will only get higher and higher .

Poh Cheu Handmade Ang Ku Kueh @ Bukit Merah Lane 1
93060
When I came by Alexandra Village Food Centre the other day and was just walking around to explore the neighbourhood, I spotted a long queue at Poh Cheu which specialises in handmade soon kueh and ang ku kueh.
93058
I went up to the stall to have a closer look and I saw an array of colourful ang ku kueh on display. So tempted to buy them so I joined the queue.
93056
They had 12 different types of ang ku kueh. Each flavour was represented by a different colour except peanut and green bean which were both red.

Just look at those colours. So pretty!
93055
I requested one of each flavour that was available (9 out of 12) and added 1 more piece of green bean.
93054
This was indeed a fantastic ang ku kueh. Each ang ku kueh was round and plump unlike most others that were slightly flatter in shape. The skin was thin, soft, smooth and oily (not rubbery at all) and the filling was thick, dense and perfectly seasoned.

How did the flavours fare after I had tried all?

Green bean – fragrant, robust tasting
Yam – like smooth yam puree, flavour not as intense but it had a nice fudgy texture
Green tea – more like green tea flavoured lotus seed paste, smooth with a strong fragrance of green tea
Red bean – smooth paste but too sweet, still like it though ‘cos I like anything red bean anyway
Peanut – coarsely ground peanuts that gave a nice crunch, roasted flavour
Pineapple – artificial, just like those ready made pineapple paste, tasted weird
Salted bean – reminded me of salted tau sar piah filling but this melted in the mouth, peppery taste
Mango – artificial, not much mango flavour
Durian – first bite came with a hint of durian flavour but none after that, tasted like the green bean one but with artificial flavour
My favourites would have to be the green bean, yam, red bean and peanut. I preferred the traditional flavours to the non-conventional ones. Worth giving them a try if you’re a fan of ang ku kueh.

Longhouse Soo Kee Duck Rice and Noodles. Tried back their boneless duck rice after 16 years when they were at Longhouse at Upper Thomson. They haven't skipped a beat as it was just as good as before. A choice of their think sweet or thin vinegar 🌶 sauce made that meal a treat. $4 per plate which includes a loh nung (braised hard boiled egg, generous portion of boneless duck, brown yam type rice, cucumber, braised chewy peanuts and a good lathering of their fantastically thick, sweet, salty and oh over so tasty loh ak (braised duck gravy). Duck gizzards available upon request. Maybe it's me, but I found their accompanying bowl of duck soup lacked any real saltishness and sweetness, like previously. If so then the best duck rice soup cum boneless duck still goes to the Sean Kee Boneless Duck Rice at the corner Coffeeshop at 2-4 Lorong 35 Geylang. However Soo Kee is much nearer for me and parking on top the hill and behind the market is a breeze, especially on Sundays. Sorry Soon Kee, maybe try to improve on your soup and you may become my favourite place for boneless duck rice.

Dunman Road Char Siew Wan Ton Mee
93518
Once upon a time, there were two famous wanton mee stalls in Dunman Food Centre. One is called “Dunman Road Char Siew Wan Ton Mee”, while the other is called “Eng’s Char Siew Wan Ton Mee”. Each of them has a fair share of fans.

It started from a joint partnership between two people in Dunman Road Char Siew Wan Ton Mee. Then the partnership broke up and one of them went to open “Eng’s Char Siew Wan Ton Mee”.
I went for lunch one Sunday afternoon, and ordered “Dunman Road Char Siew Wan Ton Mee“.

For those of you who have yet to try the their wanton noodles, let me try to give you a brief taste note. You have to first know that, they do not taste like the normal wanton noodles we eat.
93519
Noodles:
Their homemade egg noodles is much thicker than the normal mee kia.

Chilli:
Super spicy, not for the faint heat!

Wanton:
Their meat is pretty well marinated and very tasty.

HIGHLIGHTS
Wide collection of unique snow ice desserts: There are approximately 20 flavour options. Imagine! Sheets of shaved ice are piled up over one another to create a mini-tower that can be shared between two persons. You may think it sounds like your usual Ice Kachang but you’ll be surprised to realise that the flavouring of your choice has already been mixed into the ice sheets itself. It is also worth mentioning that the consistency is comparable to ice cream for its creamy taste. Apparently, this is how Mei Heong Yuen differs from the other Chinese dessert shops in Singapore.

For a bowl of traditional Cantonese paste dessert: Looks rather plain as there are no other mixes put into the dessert but unarguably healthy and can satisfy the older generation, nonetheless. Peanut paste is a crowd favourite, while Walnut, Sesame, and Almond pastes can give customers something to think about. These traditional paste desserts are made of healthy ingredients, served in soup consistency, and the portions are good for one person.
Cakes and dumplings are worth exploring: If you like to challenge the status quo, dare to try the Cantonese dumplings with an icing dip. It’s an odd concept but it might be a great game-changer for you. Other interesting selections include Chee Cheong Fun, Mango Rolls, Pumpkin Cakes, Carrot Cakes, and Glutinous Chicken Rice.
Menu
The menu is decent size but offers interesting snow ice flavours. There are four different categories to wander your eyes at, including special desserts, snow ice, traditional pastes, and cakes & dumplings.

– Mango Snow Ice
– Chendol Snow Ice
– Durian Snow Ice

Jiak lunch buey? Sic 1 of my fav, Chicken cutlet curry mee n Yong tau foo. :D

Cantonese Delights @ Hong Lim : Laksa Yong Tau Foo and More
94822
94825
There are many popular stalls at Hong Lim Food Centre such as Outram Road Char Kway Teow or Heng Kee Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee but I think Cantonese Delights is the one with the consistently longest queue. This place has been on my to-try list for very long but I was always deterred by the long queues.

Still, I was determined to visit again and this time, I was lucky to catch it open even though it was a 30-min long wait during weekday peak lunch hour.

The speed of the queue was moving like a tortoise, just like Heng Kee Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee. But the main reason was because many customers were placing takeaway orders and thus the actual queue was far longer than the number of persons standing in line.
94823
The Laksa Yong Tau Foo ($5) and Chicken Cutlet Curry Mee ($4/$5) did not disappoint our tastebuds at all. The laksa gravy was rich and fragrant, simmering with fresh ingredients such as ladyfingers, fish cakes, red pepper, etc. Do ask for more deep fried tofu skin fritters as they were crispy at the top while soggy and chewy at the base that was submerged in delicious gravy.
94826
For the Chicken Cutlet Curry Mee, I opted for my favourite Bee Hoon, also because it soaked up the mouthwatering Hainanese curry very well. I can't explain why but it seems that the dish quadrupled in deliciousness when a sinful food is paired with another sinful food. Freshly fried by the Uncle in batches rather than everything prepared beforehand and left out in the cold, the chicken cutlet retained a crunchy amour over the juicy flesh. A must try besides the Laksa Yong Tau Hoo.

Kampong Rojak

Stall 9 East Coast Lagoon Food Village, 1220 East Coast Parkway, 468960

My colleagues and I were in the East for lunch and a colleague highly recommended this Chinese Rojak at East Coast Lagoon Hawker Centre. As it was nearby, I swung by East Coast Lagoon to check it out. It was past 2pm and the car park was deserted. Good for drivers. There were few customers at the hawker cemtre as it was past lunch time.We ordered a pack to go, to share with the colleagues in office.Back in office, we opened and shared the pack. The portion was decent for $5. The rojak had cut 'you tiao' (fried dough sticks), sliced cucumbers, turnip and pineapple. There were chopped peanuts, ginger flower in the rojak sauce. The sauce were all mixed in. On hindsight, it would be good to ask for the sauce to be seperate from the ingredients, so that the ingredients remain fresh. My colleague had also ordered an extra century egg (which came with preseved ginger slices). Overall, a decent rojak, and you can always order a rojak to go with other favorites such as laksa, satay and fried oyster omelette when dining at East Coast Lagoon Hawker Centre.

Soon Heng Rojak

Every single time I walk into Gourmet Paradise in Toa Payoh, there is a snaking line for Soon Heng Rojak. Of course there will be a queue for things that are amazing and that’s what Soon Heng’s Rojak is. Heavily doused with loads of peanuts and slathered with an intense and heartening sauce, their rojak is definitely something you’d have to try for yourself.

The fruits and vegetables used are refreshing and complements the sweet sauce, giving a well-balanced flavour that will negate all queuing time. The toasted youtiao is crisp on the outside, mellow and fluffy on the inside, making it extremely addictive with the pungent yet fragrant sauce.

Chicken in Cabbage? :D

Kia Hiang: old, but not forgotten
I remember this almost dingy restaurant tucked in the corner at International Plaza even during my days when I was working around the corner at Anson Road...and when Malvyn suggested lunch there, I thought it was a splendid idea.

He made the reservations at 12:15, my friends arrived on the dot at 12:15, and they sat us.

The food came in furious time...very fast.
95750
The taugeh, was tasty...very lightly seared, with fragrant salted fish, served on a hot plate. Nice.

The omelette was interesting:
95749
This looked like a fairly typical Chinese Omellette...fried quickly in a very hot pan, with lots of oil, so the sides are almost charred crispy, because the searing heat is only applied for a short while, the insides can sometimes still be almost liquid...half cooked. I love the taste of this style of omellette. But the Kia Hiang chef has something else hidden under his sleeve. Within the eggs, he had stuffed silky tofu, and minced chicken. This made the insides of the almost crisp shell very smooth and soft, and the chicken provided some bite. Nice touch.

We also ordered the pork ribs:
95748
More like pork chops than ribs, these were rather large, flat steaks with bone attached at one end. It was rather fat, so was tender. The seasoning had some kick...adding dimension to the pork. I would have preferred a leaner cut of meat, especially with my recent experiences in Germany, but this was ok in taste.

Next the dish we came for: herbal spring chicken.
95747
When it came in a claypot, it looked like a large head of cabbage. Opening the leaf of cabbage revealed a whlole spring chicken. The sauce was a wonderful, mild brownish black sauce, which smothered the tender spring chicken. Splitting the chicken open with a spoon...the chicken was rendered to disintegrate at touch with the intense heat from the cooking, revealed a bit of moey chai...typical of Ti Wang Chi (Emperor's Chicken) which gave the gravy the characteristic flavour. The dish was excellent. Very nicely done, mild tasting, but yet excellent flavour.

Overall, a very good meal.

The food here is very good and overall, I feel that it has flavour without tending to be over oily. Of special mention is the Ngor Hiang here which is one of the best Ngor Hiang I have ever eaten. Funny to find an outstanding Ngor Hiang in a Economic Rice stall rather than a Ngor Hiang stall! The shiok thing about it is that almost one third of the Ngor Hiang is made of sweet, crunchy water chestnuts. Worth coming just for the Ngor Hiang. The curry chicken was mild, creamy and very yummy. Not as special as the Ngor Hiang but definitely very competent.

Conclusion
Overall, the food here is great which explains the constant queue. The good thing about it is that you really do feel that it is something that mom might whip up at home. (assuming your mom is an excellent cook) Great place to visit for some tasty home cooked food. 4.25/5

Blackball – The Must Eats at Taiwan’s No1 Glass Jelly Dessert Chain
96574
This Blackball Taiwanese dessert 黑丸嫩仙草 has been attracting good support, especially among the youths at Bugis+.

Seriously, with Singapore’s hot weather, almost any dessert-thing should work.
96575
Blackball is said to be Taiwan’s No.1 grass jelly desert chain, with natural ingredients flown fresh from Guanxi (that’s why more expensive lah.)
96576
The Taiwanese desserts are available cold, warm, hot or icy. I swiftly ordered the BlackBall Signature Crushed Ice ($4.90), Jiu Fen Taro Ball Crushed Ice ($4.50) and Honey Yam Crushed Ice with Milk.

The top-selling BlackBall Crushed Ice comes with an abundant variety of toppings, such as golden sweet potato, pearl, red bean, yam ball, glass jelly topped with milk.

Actually, it is qqqqqqquite close to what I had in Taiwan. You know it is not quite there yet, but is still quite delicate especially the glass jelly which has a winning smooth texture yet not being overly sweet.

The Honey Yam Crushed Ice was my table’s favourite, the yam tenderly soft almost disintegrating in the mouth. The aesthetic value can be improved, but refreshing factor is definitely there.

The Taiwanese desserts we had are not (I quote my friend) “life-changing”, but are “nice and deserve a repeat visit”. I concur.

Even my Taiwanese friend commented that it is not too bad. The name “Blackball” comes from a combination of ‘black’ glass jelly and taro ‘balls’. And Blackball’s silky glass jelly is indeed one of the best-tasting available here.
