Maxwell Food Centre tops local food haunts for third year running

By Chan Luo Er, Channel NewsAsia Posted 06 Nov 2016 11:21 Updated 06 Nov 2016 23:22

SINGAPORE: Maxwell Food Centre has emerged as the favourite food haunt of locals at the annual City Hawker Food Hunt for the third year running.

During the ceremony for the ninth edition of the awards at Ayer Rajah Food Centre on Sunday (Nov 6), 37 hawkers from more than 100 hawker centres islandwide were also recognised.

They include this year's top prizes for ngoh hiang which went to China Street Fritters (中国街五香胃肠) at Maxwell Food Centre, sambal stingray which went to Lucky Seafood (好运烧烤海鲜) at Pasir Panjang Food Centre, and fried rice which went to Tien Kee (新记) at Block 22 Toa Payoh Lorong 7.

The committee behind the food hunt rotates between various categories each year. Apart from the top stall from each food category, other stalls in the top 10 also received prizes.

More than 15,000 people voted online for their favourite hawker centre and the above three categories online at the City Hawker Food Hunt website between June and September.

Three new special award categories were also introduced this year to cover innovative hawker fare, economical dishes and environmentally-friendly practices.

Those on a budget can check out Xian Jin Mixed Vegetable Rice at Bedok North Street 1 Market and Food Centre, which sells any three meat items with rice for just S$2. They also serve bak kut teh at the same price.

The sole Green Hawker Stall award went to Ho Peng Coffee Stall at Maxwell Food Centre. The drinks stall owner has been recycling milk tin cans for customers who order takeaway for 60 years.

There are around 107 markets and hawker centres in Singapore, many of which are located in the heartlands.

City Hawker Food Hunt is jointly organised by City Gas and Shin Min Daily News and is supported by the Health Promotion Board, National Environment Agency and Singapore Tourism Board.

Wen Wen Pork Rib Big Prawn Mee: Prawn Broth Seafood Hotpot With Free-Flow Noodles

If you’re wondering if Wen Wen Pork Rib Big Prawn Mee has closed for good since their previous location at Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre is now undergoing renovation. Not to worry, they are now at an more accessible location at Old Airport Road Food Centre.

We took the chance to visit them on their first day at their new location. The boss Mr Richard, is super friendly and apologized profusely for making us wait for the fresh crabs to arrive on that day.

Apart from offering staple items like Prawn Mee ($4), Pigs Intestines Noodles ($5), Pork Rib Noodles ($5), Pig Tail Noodles ($5.50) & La La Soup ($5). They offer a Seafood Hot Pot ($50 onwards) that features a prawn-based broth used for their prawn noodles as well.

We couldn’t wait to snap away just looking at the mesmerizing colours of the Seafood Pot. Take it slow in the beginning and add your ingredients to the seafood pot to allow it to absorb the flavours of the broth.

The Seafood Pot comes with a variety of ingredients (crabs, prawns, clams, pigs intestines, pigs tail, pigs skin and pork ribs). Our version had baby abalone added to it which had a super smooth, chewy texture and pleasant briny flavour.

Other premium ingredients such as crayfish are available as well, but do call to check for its availability before going down.

The ingredients in the Seafood Hot Pot are all very well prepared. The crabs from India were extremely fresh with tender sweet flesh that can be pulled apart easily from the shell.

We really liked the crystal-like pig’s skin and pig’s tail that was packed full with flavour and a bit of collagen for a rich meal.

Based on the Seafood Hot Pot experience that we had, we can predict queues forming even on weekdays. Do call to reserve your Seafood Hot Pot in advance as there are a limited supply of seafood that they bring in for each day.

If you’re dining in a small group or don’t have time to slowly enjoy the seafood hot pot experience, try out their premium noodle offerings such as Abalone Noodle ($22.80) or Abalone, Pork Rib & Big Prawn Noodle ($18) as well.

Expected damage: $50 to $150 (Depending on number of people dining)

Thanks to the reminder of fellow bro here , I have not come here for many many years until today. Surprised to find operating hours changed as they used to open much earlier.

Even from the past, the braised dark sauce pig's trotters will be the highlight. If there are few more people eating, we will add on the bak kut teh 肉骨茶 and vegetable soup.

Frankly the pig's trotters are still good. I was not into the fatty type but the lean ones were meaty and tasty albeit a little salty.

There used to be an "Ah Mui" there but I didn't see her today. Apparently, as I know, they were related to Rong Cheng at Sin Min.

What a blast from the past...

I always find the Michelin stars (not the consolation bib gourmand) somehow missed some of the most famous delicacies in Singapore - Chilli crab, Curry Fish Head and of course Hainanese Chicken Rice.
Some folks believe all Chicken Rice are the same but it's not to be. The old school Hainanese Yi Qun to the executive Mandarin Hotel Chatterbox set to the tourists' fav Tian Tian all spot different presentation and cook styles.
One recent good finds I have will be Master Chicken helmed by Chef Jason Lim. He may be young but his cook style and hardworking attitude on top of his friendly disposition make him a promising food entrepreneur.
His trademark deboned chicken taste succulent and has a good bite. He uses good grains which also help in making the rice smells good and taste good yet not too overwhelming.
I had the giblets and liver and they taste good. Of course a good chilli, minced ginger and dark sauce complement the meal with a nice clear chicken soup.

PENANG CULTURE

Penang Culture's halal Penang food got a tweak recently with new additions to the menu.

Some are good, such as the Premium Lobster & Scallop Noodles ($16.50), which turns the humble Penang Hokkien prawn noodles into a gourmet version topped with scallops, slipper lobster, chicken pieces. fishcake, a hard-boiled egg and kangkong.

What is important is that the broth is as rich as in the original hawker version, with the complex flavours of the prawns, crabs and chicken bones used to brew it.

MING'S PRAWN NOODLE

58381

While many of his peers found jobs in restaurants after graduation, At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy alumnus Cai Jiaming, 26, chose the hawker route instead.

Almost every day, he heads to Jurong Fishery Port at 3am to pick the freshest prawns and to a wet market to get his supply of pork ribs.

At about 5am, he gets his master stock going for the day.

Six months on, Mr Cai's Ming's Prawn Noodle stall, at Alexandra Village Food Centre, has drawn a steady following of loyal customers.

The menu is simple - prawn noodles or pork rib noodles, priced at $3.50 each. Or have the best of both worlds with the pork ribs and prawn noodles for $5.

It is a rainy morning when I head to the stall, so I pick the comforting pork rib and prawn noodles in soup without hesitation.

The very polite Mr Cai asks me to pick my noodle of choice - I go for the yellow noodles.

Next question. Would I like my prawns shelled? Now, that is a very thoughtful option for people who do not want to get their hands dirty or are lazy, like me. Shelled please.

He then directs me to the tub of fried lard. I can add my own and, of course, I do.

There is ground chilli powder and sliced red chilli to spice up the soup.

On my tray, he places a (free) wet towel and cheerfully wishes me an enjoyable meal.

While the hot soup does not look as rich as others I have tried, it is still flavourful. It is light and I drink up most of it.

I get three plump prawns, along with three pork ribs. The prawns are bigger than usual and extremely fresh. While the pork ribs are slightly fatty, the meat is tender and juicy. The dish also includes beansprouts and kangkong.

Mr Cai admits that it has been a tough learning experience and that he hopes his decision to take the "more challenging" route is worth it. The chef may not be in a restaurant, but his service and cooking are top-notch. I hope he perseveres.

WHERE: Ming's Prawn Noodle, Alexandra Village Food Centre, 120 Bukit Merah Lane 1, 01-01

MRT: Queestown

OPEN: 7.30am to 4pm (Thursdays to Tuesdays), closed on Wednesdays

Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee

#01-3030 Stall 5 7 Star Coffee Shop, 151 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5, 560151

Was craving for a bowl of Thai Wanton noodles and decided to try the Soi 19 wanton noodles i've heard good things about in Ang Mo Kio. It was a Sunday and we arrived at around 11am to be greeted with this long queue which extended to the outer vicinity of the coffee shop they were housed in.

The price of the noodles ranged from $3.50 to $6 per bowl depending on your preference. You'll have lots of time to reflect and decide in the queue so there's no need to worry prior to queuing.

We ordered 3 bowls for each one of us after queuing for about 1 hour. I got large bowls for 2 and 1 with black sauce which added to a total damage of $15.

You can see that the large bowl gave more ingredients which is the fried pork belly char siew, additional fried wantons, chinese sausage (lup cheong), vegetables and wantons. Unless you're a big eater, the noodles are enough as it is.

From the 2 variations, i found the black sauce noodles tasted better. The noodles used seems to be a variation of the Kolo Mee found in Sarawak Malaysia albeit slightly thinner. This is a love it or hate it kind of thing for patrons and judging by the queue, many people loved it.

Since our bowl had additional ingredients, its nice to note that the stall uses their interpretation of "Bu Jian Tian" char siew which we fell in love with in the Tiong Bahru market stall that you can read here. This version, though using the same part, is sliced thinner and the char siew sauce is less fragrant when compared to Zhong Yu Yuan Wei. It still has its charm i believe. The lup cheong however, did not sit well with my wife and was left largely untouched. The vegetables and fried wanton are very serviceable as long as you do not expect anything special about them.

The wanton broth is salty and peppery which some people like and the wantons are nice despite their small size. We did find the wanton skin a tad thicker then usual.

Overall, the wanton noodles here are well made and with the queue, many people loved it enough to queue 1 hour for it.

Verdict: Good if there's no queue

Zao Lek Lok Lok: Boil, BBQ, Deep Fried Skewered Foods Now in Singapore Too

Gone are the days when we’ll have to cross the boarder into Johor Bahru for lok lok, or dip skewered foods to boil in a steamboat. While there are a handful of lok lok places popping up in Singapore, Zao Lek Lok Lok sets itself apart with the vast variety of dipping sauces it has, along with a manned barbecue and deep fried station.

Offering a lok lok buffet ($24 nett/pax), Zao Lek Lok Lok has recently also expanded into an ala carte menu, and has just gotten its approval for serving beers at its premise.

Up to six flavours are available on its menu, which includes chicken soup, Ma La, Tom Yum, $$$$$, Bak Kut Teh, and Satay (additional $4). Being lovers of spicy foods, we chose Ma La for our first soup base and Bak Kut Teh for the second, as it is quite uncommonly seen as a broth for steamboat.

I’d suggest not drinking the soups as they are saltier and more concentrated, more to flavour and season the food while they cook rather than for drinking.

A wide selection of skewered vegetables, meats and seafood were displayed and kept fresh in the fridges. As with eating at a buffet, grab a tray and feel free to go crazy with piling it up, but finish it too lah don’t waste food.

Some of our favourites were the smoked duck, bacon wrapped Enoki mushrooms, mantous (buns), vegetables wrapped in bean curd skin.

Once you’re satisfied with what’s on your tray, you may choose to cook them in three ways — to boil in the individual steamboat, bbq or deep fry. If you’re not sure which methods of cooking would be better, just leave it in the hands of the friendly staffs and they will use the most appropriate method for your ingredients.

Lok lok is all about unashamedly dipping the foods into the sauces, licking every bit up even if it drips onto your fingers. At Zao Lek Lok Lok, you’d find tubs of sauces like Thai Green Chilli Sauce, Chilli Crab Sauce, Fresh Hainanese Chilli, Sambal Chilli, Sweat Bean Paste, Dark Soy Chilli & Garlic, and Sweet & Spicy Thai Sauce.

Do look out for promotions that are going on its Facebook page, and extra touches that Zao Lek Lok Lok provides for an enjoyable lok lok experience with your friends. It’s pretty affordable and a throwback to good ol days, so do come visit Zao Lek Lok Lok.

Expected damage: $2.50 for 3 sticks – $24/pax

20 years of serving people living in the Yishun district has prepared this stall to effectively tackle the slew of lunch orders they receive daily. The juicy chicken that is coated in a thick layer of soy sauce is cooked at what the owners deem the optimal temperature. And because it is strictly boneless here, you can be guaranteed an equitable share of chicken for your money.

1. Long Qing Restaurant

5964259643

And finally, the top of my list would be Long Qing restaurant. Priding themselves in various soup bases that are 100% free of MSG and made from scratch, it doesn’t get any better than this.

In addition to their delicious hotpot, their restaurant is decked out in super hip furnishings complete with concrete walls painted thematically and tastefully.

Hot Pot Set ($55 – $65)

For the divided bowl, we selected a mala broth on one side and wild mushrooms on the other. The spicy mala was numbingly satisfying as our meats and vegetables absorbed the spice when dipped into the piping hot soup. The wild mushroom was an excellent palate cleanser as well.

Their luncheon meat ($6.80), potato noodles ($3.80) and crispy beancurd skin rolls ($6.80) are strongly recommended.

Perfect for an intimate dinner setting with your loved ones.

126 Dim Sum Wen Dao Shi (搵到食): Singapore Food Review

“Original Hong Kong road-side style Dim Sum”

126 Dim sum, or Wan Dou Sek (搵到食) in Cantonese, is a brilliant wordplay on the name as well as the street number that this dum sum restaurant is located on. If the owner wasn’t into dim sum, he/she could seriously consider a career in copywriting.

This is probably the most authentic looking Hong Kong style dim sum in Singapore, complete with a burly aunty with permed hair. Other close runner ups include Swee Choon Dim Sum and Victor’s Kitchen. The sheer genius of 126 Eating House dim sum is that it’s open 24 hrs, every single day.

598475984859849
598505985159852

Liu Sha Bao 流沙包 ($3.50). This is possibly the worst Liu Sha Bao (Golden Custard Bun) I have ever eaten. Not flowy at all, just a lump of custard that was made with corn and not even salted egg yolk. Avoid this at all costs.

Another item to avoid is the Xiao Long Bao, which I tried the last time. 126 dim sum’s version is a DRY xiao long bao with no soup inside. Bleh. The Char Siew bao and Har Gaos are pretty good though, as well as the homemade drinks, having extra touches like lemon tea with pomelo fibres.

Overall a decent, casual place to go with friends especially when hungry after midnight. I’d say Swee Choon Dim Sum is still a better choice overall, because their Liu Sha Bao is way better, but expect to pay a little bit more.

Affectionately known as the “basketball ramen” because of the logo, Marutama Ramen serves up a chicken broth instead of the usual pork based one. Chicken as a base isn’t as popular but Marutama has managed to convert many, having opened 3 outlets in Singapore. Chicken isn’t usually as flavourful as pork but at Marutama they do it right and is equal to a tonkotsu broth in terms of hearty flavour in my opinion.

There have been divided opinions about Marutama’s ramen but I love it (it’s also Seth’s favorite ramen in Singapore). There are only a handful of variations on the menu but frankly I don’t think they need any more. It’s a change from the pork based ramen but equally as satisfying and delicious.

Conceived by the creators of Tiong Bahru Pau, Sam Yat Coffee is their rendition of a Kopitiam-esque eatery, except with a modern twist. This was certainly a refreshing change from the hipster cafes that surround the vicinity.

Simplicity is at its finest when it comes to their interior. With white tiled walls and classic wooden tables, they have a pleasantly clean environment compared to the typical coffee shops we are used to frequenting. Not to mention the fact that it is air-conditioned, offering a nice refuge from the heat of the sun.

Toast set ($4.20)

Although they had various local delicacies on their lunch menu such as economic bee hoon and $$$$$, I decided to go for the holy breakfast trinity instead. Like other coffee shops, their toast set includes the familair trio: kaya butter toast, two soft boiled eggs and a choice drink of either coffee or tea.

Their traditional Kaya butter toast was nothing special, but up to my standards nonetheless. With a generous Kaya spread and a slab of butter wedged between each toast, it was a delight to have. The toast was also notably crisp around the edges, giving it a nice crunch.

Other options include the peanut butter toast ($1.60), steamed butter kaya ($3), french toast ($3) and scrambled eggs on toast ($3) if you prefer to go without the set.

The soft boiled eggs were cooked just right, in my opinion. The yolk was runny and the egg whites were consistent in texture. Topped with the usual soya sauce and white pepper combination, I slurped the entire bowl within seconds.

Serving up your favourite local delights, complete breakfast sets and unique desserts, Sam Yat Coffee is a great place to go to unwind and catch up with friends over a tea break. I would return solely for their kaya bingsu and perhaps to try their other desserts.

Expected damage: $4.20 – $6.00

The Coconut Club: Bringing Nasi Lemak And Cendol Back To Basics

Read more: http://sethlui.com/the-coconut-club-singapore/#ixzz4RXzTtwEw

Ann Siang Hill is THE place to be on a Friday and Saturday night, but there’s equal appeal to visit during the day. Slow walks along the winding streets and quaint shops make for a great afternoon and an even better one if I can get my hands on some solid local food.

The Coconut Club has now made sure of that.

A rustic interior immediately puts you at ease and echoes the very essence of the concept: going back to basics

I loved the old school decor and details that surround the open plan “bar”, where you can watch your favourite drinks being made. Teh, Kopi and Barley served just the way you like them.

60572
6057360574

I opted for the Homemade Ice Lemongrass Tea ($3) which ended up being the perfect complement to my lunch that day. I actually expected it to be sickeningly sweet but was pleasantly surprised with a well-balanced and refreshing drink, ideal as a palate cleanser.

I obviously expected the food to involve some kind of coconut, which it did and the small menu centres around two main dishes: Nasi Lemak and Cendol.

Yup, if you’re going to do something, do it right and do it well.

The lovely folks at The Coconut Club have spent two years researching and perfecting every individual element that makes nasi lemak one of Singapore’s national favourites. I’m a Changi girl, so I know my nasi lemaks, and guys, I think they’ve nailed it.

I can’t even rave about one component over the other because everything on that plate was made exactly how it should be and probably was, way back when.

The basic Nasi Lemak ($12.80) came served with a substantial portion of ayam goreng berumpah, and I was so glad that I wasn’t receiving a measly chicken wing. The seasoning on that chicken was on point and paired so well with the fluffy coconut rice and homemade sambal reminiscent of some of the best I’ve ever had.

The price seems steep but when you’ve had one too many an oily or jelat nasi lemak, I’d happily shell out that bit more for quality.

The generous portion of nasi lemak more than fills you up, but there is always space for dessert. I was worried about an overdose of coconut but the Cendol ($3.80) left no space for regrets.

The Coconut Club proudly sources its own coconuts, which goes into the nasi lemak rice and produces the coconut milk for the cendol. I was admittedly not that big a fan of cendol before trying this, given the occasional artificial flavour that the dish has, but now I’m officially a convert.

Shaved ice is topped with creamy coconut milk, palm sugar syrup, and homemade pandan rice flour jelly to produce this bowl of awesomeness. I noticed the different pale green colour, which is purely because no artificial colouring is added.

This cendol is up there with the best and would make for the perfect afternoon snack.

A restaurant on Ann Siang Hill without alcohol would seem a little out of place, so I’m glad The Coconut Club decided to include craft draft beers and wines on the menu. I never thought I’d recommend a wine with nasi lemak but this popular Rosé de Léoube ($58) cuts through the flavours beautifully.

I could probably not justify paying for this meal every single day, but eating nasi lemak that often can’t be good for you anyway. So the next time you’re after a solid version of this local delight, you know where to go.

They’ve definitely spoilt the market for me though in terms of cendol.

Expected Damage: $12 – $20 per pax

There seems to be an increase in white beehoon stalls recently. One of which I tried recently was Woon Woon white beehoon situated at Changi village food centre. Managed by two young lads (good friends) whom left their desk bond jobs to become young hawkers, which was the recent trend. The way I see them work round the stall, they definitely have passion in food. The stall was clean, neatly organized and signboards brightly lit to show customers what they actually have. As you could see from this price chart, there's different mix and match seafood varieties for you to choose from. Our beehoon portion was $30.00, which could easily feed 3-5pax, especially girls. There's 3 whole crayfish, lotsa clams, sea prawns, snakehead fish slices etc. On top of these sea creatures, generous amount of chinese cabbage, garlic bits and crispy pork lards were added in. In this whole dish, the most important factor for me personally, was the broth. It was sweet, but sweetness came from the chinese cabbage. The taste of the cabbage eventually covered the crustacean /seafood base which I felt a pity. Probably portions could be adjusted or Woon Woon could improve their base broth. Beehoon did not slurp up the soup too so it may be good if they were pre-fried with abit of "wok hei" taste to improve the overall taste.

TS thanks for sharing nice food.

Curry fish head set lunch meal for 4 today. Extremely yummy. Sri Veera's Curry Restaurant at 1 Hindoo Lane. 2 fish heads in claypot, 4 meat dishes, free flow 3 veg and rice served on banana leaf. Cost $30 nett.

I especially loved the teh tarek which tasted extra special than normal teh tarek I've tried, seemed to extra lemak and creamy tasting!

Their dum bryani and other dishes seems to be very good and popular too as I saw a lot of the other patrons ordering and devouring them most gleefully.
Owner, T Nagarajan, who is the grandson of M Vererasamy, the pioneer of fish head curry and masala chicken in Singapore, has carried on the family tradition. We were the only Chinese patrons in the place at lunchtime. As the whole place was packed full of local and foreign Indian 👳🏿 diners as well, and with so many Indian restaurants surrounding it, authenticity was assured and it just had to surely be good. 😊 Highly recommended‼️

Beehoon did not slurp up the soup too so it may be good if they were pre-fried with abit of "wok hei" taste to improve the overall taste.

Tried it's tasty and filling to the stomach but I feel it lack "wok mei". One man's meet is another man's poison so go give it a try.

On those gloomy days when all I need is a pick me up, nothing but a decent bowl of herbal soup will do. A herbal soup stall generally sells a variety, catering to the different benefits that the combination of herbal ingredients in the soups offer.

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses natural herbs with healing properties, and these recipes translate into soups that are perfect if you’re feeling under the weather. For a good and dependable selection, visit Earth Jar Treasure.

If you’re feeling tired, opt for the Ginseng Chicken Soup, or if you’re fighting a fever the Heat Relief Lotus Pork Soup will probably help alleviate your pain. You can definitely rest easy knowing these soups are going to be good for you

Earthen Jar Treasure Herbal Soup

NTUC Foodfare’s New Kitchen Loft Opens at Mapletree Business City

There are about 8 different stalls:

Heavenly Wang
Thai buffet (closed during dinnertime)
Japanese
Malay food
Indian food
Chinese stir fried food
Western food
Bar
You may be thinking, $6.90 a meal is not cheap. But if you walk around Kitchen Loft, the surrounding restaurants are more expensive to eat at.

There is also a Foodmaster food court at Mapletree Business City II, but it’s all the way at the other end and doesn’t seem to have the evening deals.

We also went to Foodmaster to look for dessert but the stalls were closed at 830pm although the food court technically operates till 9pm.

It’s always better to have more choices anyway, and I would come back to Kitchen Loft on weekday nights for the chill ambience and 1-for-1 deals.

I really like the effort put into the Kitchen Loft décor, such as the lighting, hanging plants, ceiling shelves and the stall frontages with jars of food on shelves below the counter. Very instagrammable.

(Orange line) By car:

Park at ARC which has free parking on weekday nights and weekends, then walk over via the overhead bridge closer to Fragrance Empire Building.

(Pink line) By MRT:

Exit Labrador MRT and take the overhead bridge to ARC Level 2 (keep left, don’t go down the escalator to level 1).

Option 1: for mobile people

Walk past the DBS and turn left at Coffee Bean.

Walk straight past Unity and follow the overhead walkway (there are steps here) to end up at Mapletree Business City.

Turn right at Starbucks, walk past the Pasta Mania and then turn left just before the travellators.

Option 2: For prams and wheelchairs

If you are pushing a pram or on a wheelchair, when you reach ARC, walk past DBS and go straight until you see ichiban boshi.

Turn left and enter the walkway between the western bar and Korean restaurant which will take you to another overhead walkway (orange line) without steps.

Go straight up the walkway and you’ll see Kitchen Loft.

(Blue line) By bus:

Depending on where you alight, make your way towards the bright lights of Mapletree Business City I.

Opening hours:

Mon-Fri: 8am to 9pm

Sat: 8am to 2 pm

In a land of Asian broths and soups, sometimes all you need is a creamier and thicker alternative to make the most of a soddy day. My palate demands the occasional seafood chowder, which seems to be getting increasingly popular in Singapore.

Chowder has a history of being considered a poor man’s food, where any available vegetables and fish are stewed in a pot with milk, flour and water. Now, chowders are laden with all kinds of seafood and my favourite has to be a good ol’ clam chowder, served in a bread bowl.

Seattle Pike Chowder does a great version in the form of the New England Clam Chowder. If you’re new to chowder, they even offer a Sampler Chowder where you get to choose from three on the menu.
