Hi RapeBill,

Change the absolute minimum here, then convert the rest in Bangkok once you're there. It might make more sense that way. :)

By the way, how often do you travel to Bangkok? It seems like you're there all the time! :p

oh, I will normally change my money at GM because my wife's family will usually fetch me from the airport and go back directly.

This year, I have been going to thailand once every 2 months. Very taxing, on all aspects.

Hi Norikasan55,

May I ask for some advice? The last time I was in Bangkok, I purchased a series of top-up credits for 1-2-call in 7-eleven, but the only thing the cashier gave me were receipts of purchase with PIN numbers printed on each one. It turned out to be the wrong purchase - apparently they're supposed to be issuing you only scratch-and-reveal top-up cards instead of just receipts. As expected, the PIN numbers on the receipts were not usable (in any case, there is an additional digit reflected as opposed to the normal 16-digit PIN on the scratch cards).

That's 2000 baht down the drain, then. I just want to know what went wrong during the transaction process - the cashier didn't know English and I showed him a sample of the scratch card I bought in Singapore for reference so it couldn't have been wrong, no?

Buy 1xM1 top up card 15 dollars which have 18dollars value valid for 6 mths with 021 airtime free. 18 dollars of local airtime = 021 call to thai airtime.

Buy 1xM1 1818 calling card which is 10 dollars can be use at home or anywhere in sg.

My key point is..

Using M1 1818 card on M1 top up card can get 300mins of talk time to thai.

At the same time the M1 top up card value will not be deducted. But remember the 6 mths expiry, few days/weeks before the top up card expiry simply use it to call 021 to thailand to finish up the 18 dollars value.

M1 top up card have autoroam service. Also M1 internet sms is FREE. Each day anonymous/guest can visit M1 website to send up to 40sms per day to M1 subscriber.

Bro , no kidding?? the top up card value will not be deducted? So good?:p I better get myself the formulae u created as soon as possible...

confirmed toll free to call 1818 from m1 prepaid card

from the FAQS on m1 webby
20. Will I be charged for local airtime when I make overseas calls using mobile phones?
When you make an international call with the 1818 card using a mobile phone, you will be billed for the local airtime charges by the relevant telecom operator and the ICC 1818 rate. Only M Card users making 1818 calls will not be billed for local airtime charges as the call is toll-free.

But for internet sms, the m1 subscriber u are smsing needs to be subscribed to internet sms isnt' it?

Can anyone advise if the rate at Suvarnabhumi AP is comparable to what we exchange in singapore? I'm in rush and didn't manage to exchange in singapore, dun want to get ripped at the Changi AP, but I think over in Bangkok, the rate isn't that bad as compared to our AP.

Superrich plunged to 23.75
Over the weekend through mon, rate held steady at most bkk changers between 23.75-23.82. Also depends on USD movement

Last week, thai central bank also got some flak for defending bht.

I've not bought Thai Baht for almost a year already as I'm usually paid in Baht. But all ended up in MPs/G-Clubs. Haizzz. :( :D

What I suggested was at times like these. When THB is at 24+ region buy more and hold. Don't be too greedy. :)

I bought some HKD at 5.40 last week as I feel it may strengthen to 5.10 in the coming months as seen in 2007. Good to buy some JPY as well. USD maybe buy a little first as it's on upwards trend. 1.36 few months back. Now slowing climbing up at 1.4+ region. The days of 1.3-4 region will not last forever. I will whack if it drops to 1.39+ and hold long term.

Haha really too greedy. Didn't think the SG Govt will cut appreciation of SGD so soon. Was still holding out for 24.5 at that time. Pity now.

USD seems like on slight rebound but have to see how the feds handle. Seems like everyone is stockpiling cash. I'm personally going into gold.

With oil down, USD in turmoil, EUR prolly stable..GOLD is where I see all the stockpiles of cash going into. :p

I suggest you change some SGD to THB in Singapore first to use for the first 1 or 2 days in BKK. Bring SGD to change to THB in BKK. Don't change in Suvarnabhumi Airport as the rates suck.

You really mean 100/4.516. Logic is that you are either buying or selling foreign currencies to your HOME currency. So buying bht100 costs you S$4.516*. Reverse order when in LOS. Selling your S$1, you get bht23.XX. (LOS home currency). *Works out to 22.14, which really sucks:D

Thanks all the bros for their advice. Heard that the Thai airport there got some auntie money changers who give a better rate than the airport money changer counters, would that be a better choice? Or change in BKK city better?

Coz my funds only come in on 1st Oct which is a holiday...then 2nd oct early morning flight so no other place to change.

change in Goldenmile the best la, 2nd best option go little india Mustafa Centre (24hrs), rates pretty decent, or change in BKK shopping centres (there is one at Ratchada Robinson) and last option at the hotel.

dun trust those money changers walking around the airports or those taxis touts...

Okok thanks. Coz I limited option for funds exchange. Money never come in on time. So thinking change abit somewhere for travel expenses(BKK taxi and stuff) then change whatever I withdraw at Changi Airport before the flight at BKK.

So actually looking more for money changers in BKK.

..changing at Thailand hotel is still better than changing at the airports, i always notice airport rates are always at least 1.5baht or more lower
Both airports AND hotels are no-nos. Even bkk airport's better than changi's. For hotels, worse off than bkk airport. Another extension to their business (like F&B, or overpriced minbars:p). When in urgent need, change minimum to get you by.

I'm not in the trade but why is the baht so strong even with all the political problems and worldwide financial meltdown.

With tourism and exports down , one would expect the thais to devalue it. As well with the problems mentioned above , I was expecting it to be in their 30's like post-Asian Financial Crisis.

Any insight?

Yeah true SGD went down vs other curriencies too. I was expecting thailand to devalue the baht too so they can increase their two main money earners ; tourism and exports.

But the baht is also holding against other currencies that why i was puzzeled why its still so strong. Some people say it is pegged mostly to the yen ; among other currencies.

Not trying to steal the spotlight from Bro YY....he may have a diff reason which would likely be more accurate compared to mine...

But basically, I think the Thai Central Bank is artificially supporting the Thai Baht agst other currencies now...but they will not be able to do tat (plans to de-value the baht in Jan 2009) for long...

Whereas, MAS is not intervening as of now...

Just my thoughts...Bro YY....how true is this and ur comments pls?

I'm just a regular bloke, with interested eye on bht for personal interests (consumption?)... no diff from rest of us here;). If only my crystal ball's working, I'd have a field day with puyings with plenty change left:p

On currencies, it's all relative to what other currencies you compare with. We all know about the strong USD, so you see bht bandwith close to 33.9 and our sgd close to 1.50 (1.48/9) last night).

Honestly, we shdn't read too much into bht devaluation into 2009. But it's clear with MAS stand on loosening sgd for our exports to more competitive due to our lousy GDP (growth) nos.

As for political strife, it's no longer at aug's height. Moral victory (for PAD) with taksin's conviction and now there's broach talk of peace talks by chamlong.

As for economic front, here's latest economic stimulus by thai govt -deficit spending bht350bil or 3.5% of GDP (up from 2%+)
Bangkok Post | Top Stories | New stimulus (http://www.bangkokpost.com/topstories/topstories.php?id=131714)

Anyhow, I believe rate over tues/yesterday has since slightly improved to broach 23. What happens next week is anybody's guess.

Interesting to see bht development to sgd over the period. (If you can't see the picture, here's the link below).
