I am wondering....2 days ago, I send some $ to my tirak in BKK thru a remittance company in Goldenmile. The exchange rate was SGD$1 to THB 22.43. The moneychanger's rate there was SGD$1 to THB22.5. On top of the lower rate, I was also charged an adminstration fees of SGD$12.

My question is this....can we remit in THB instead of SGD?

Bro, I don't think we can remit using Thai baht here. The banks/remittance company opearate on S$ only.

If you have Thai baht and want to send it up, they will convert it to S$ first. Then they will calculate how much Thai baht it can change into. It is not worth it.

Thanks Bro! It seems that both ways, these remittance companies will earn. Not only they give a lower exchange rate but also charge an adminstration fees of SGD$12.:(

I still have some THB left over from my last trip. I will be going up again in May, guess I will save it up for then.:)

Selling rate (by money changer) for currency notes. TT rates more favourable, due to handling. Of course, if you have plenty bahts to offload then look for their buying rate.

Reverse when you in LOS (not to confuse you further) their buying rate for sgd (ie your selling rate) is what interests us. Changing your small fortune for your next foray?:D

1. TT (telegraphic transfer) or bank draft. Easier if you have electronic banking. For TT, working days lead time -if different banks

2. Remittance shops (24 hours window, excl weekends/hols). Popular is GM. Register account with your nric. 1/2 shops can even do electronic transfers via direct debit on local bank account and own webbie link

3. Hand carry by some1 trustworthy:p

"Stronger baht expected next week"

(BangkokPostcom) - The Kasikorn Research Centre believes the baht will continue to strengthen against the greenback next week as foreign investors continue to get rid of the US dollar.

They also attributed the continued strengthening of the Thai currency to increased market activity from importers and exporters.

Analysts believe the baht could move to between 31.40-31.60 baht.

erm.... actually when 1 sgd change >23 baht, that mean sing dollar is strong and baht is weak?
meaning the thai economy is no good and sing econ is very good?

at the moment, the sing currency is appreciating.. gaining in value against other currencies, doesn't necessarily mean thai economy no good.

Hi all,

As many of us would have read, the S$ is strengthening against the US as well as other currencies in the region and this has allowed us to import more goods with the same amount of money. As i think it would also apply to thai baht, it is a matter of time that the exchange would hit something like 24.7 - 24 or so. I think 2 years ago, this was the rate as i was travelling to BKK quite often. However, i was actually surprised that the baht was still going strong even after the Ringgit inched its way down....RM is S$1 = 2.32RM...so lets hope that the baht will ease a little....for those who are going to BKK, if you did not already know, the rates seem a little better in bkk then in Singapore, because it is....so you could change some there as well....

cheers...

others that have also eased are the HKD - 1 = 5.7 or so the last time i saw on the singapore money changers....

It's the soft USD vs other currencies. Reason S$ is better of late (vs THB) is MAS tweaking within a broadband of basket of currencies. If only we had a crystal ball..but I wouldn't hazard a bet 24.7 (or did you mean 23.7?) -24 range so soon. If you are right, many bros will be smiling to the bank (ooops, LOS)
...Like to know if there is any difference between the remittance rates in GM & the ah neh moneychanger's rate. If so which offer better rates?
Bro, there is always some diff between remittance rates and regular exchange (money shop or ah neh2). Diff sometimes called margin, service charge etc. Your cashing out US$ must have hurt..

Bro you know how to find out export rates/charges for goods (not human) from thailand to singapore?

Hi bro, i am not too sure about the costs, but the last time i went to bring in some stuff, i decided to check out the rates. It is something like this, please do correct me if i am inaccurate,

They charge either by half container or full container load....something like SGD$2500 or so for the full container load or something. Its about 10m square of space....like i mentioned, i did not bother to find out in detail when i heard the costs. There are other factors to consider, i.e., singapore port duties and taxes, some holding charges and what have you. It turned our quite costly. As i was bringing in some cloth material, i decided to handcarry it over....saved a whole lot....but there are places in jatuchak where they make arrangements for your transport. There are also a few at Pratunam Plaza OTOP where they do tihs service....i suggest you go to these places or ask others who have experience in this for more info....

really sorry about the lack of help. Kor Tort mak...

Hi,

Stay @Budget inn near the bus interchange, a room cost around $20 or a little bit more. There are a few within the walking distance near the bus interchange. I am not sure now whether the rental has increased or not. For alcohol, drink Thai whisky, Viper, the housing quite similar to JW red label. A 750ml bottle of Viper cost around S$20plus, the price is slighty higher in night spot. Forget Chivas ,& JW Black label & woman if you want to spend within your described budget. Maybe if you are able to get a free bonk or at a reasonable price if you are articulate & good looking. Good luck.

Read somewhere from some money article that rule of thumb is changing currencies at departure (esp with sg's open forex) is better. Like last weekend, most bkk places were notch below 23

BKK exchange rates were 23.1 or slighty above 23 , Sing dollars appreciating and they are keen to buy more . :)

Hi,

So is there a UOB Thai branch anywhere near the airport? Sorry for asking again, but I think I'll only be changing my currency once I reach Thai shores. It doesn't make sense to travel all the way somewhere in Bangkok for that extra exchange rate benefit so I'll really need a good money exchange service once I land. I know the airport exchange sucks. :)

Bro, I can only fathom that not many here bother with locating UOB branch in close proximity to airport. Airport's in middle of nowhere, daresay most will just head off to their destination hotel -not unless you thinking of nearest built up areas like Srinakarin or Bangna.

UOB/Bkk Bank rates are only indication, do not think rest deviates too much from prevailing market pricing. Yes, airports are not best places to change money.

For practical reasons, can always change enough for "seed" money from Sg (eg GM). When in town, you can looksee rates to change daily. From my experience, the lesser known banks and kiosks (than bigger Bkk Bank types) offer a shade of difference.

Not that diff will make you a rich man, unless you got a small fortune to trade. Going July (my radar's on 1/2 week).:p:D

It's been rising consistently for the past 2 weeks! Local exchange rates will hit the magical 24.0 by next week - who will bet against it?

I wonder if it's anything to do with the current political situation in Thailand in general (protests against fuel prices and murmurs of a strike by lorry drivers threatening to cripple the famous Bangkok traffic to a standstill).

Weaker baht pay more imports, like oil based products etc. Bkk also kena rising inflation, so with higher cost of living who else but end customer pay? sure, less fishballs or smaller food portion is another price change.

Not only taxi just up now (bht35 flag rate still on, but distance linked). Your condoms also go up, if you believe latest price controls on 60 items lifted::p

Suk stretches forever, doesn't it - I don't think my legs will appreciate me walking 20 minutes to wrangle an extra 20 baht out of the better exchange rate. :p I'll probably be staying in Soi 11 this time around and I think it'll take at least that amount of time to walk to Soi 22. Food portion is already very small for a bowl of THB20 noodles. Can imagine need to eat x3 bowls just to fill up the stomach when the food portion shrinks.

Maybe the WLs will use the oil price hike and raise their fees. :p

I feel the Thai P4P scene is getting too complacent for its own good. They have to look around what the region is offering. Nevermind let the law of economics do its job. When your favourite chicken rice stall increases its price. Naturally you switch to a nearby stall offering a competitive price with the same if not better quality.

Wake up call?

Airlines to cut long-haul flights to Thailand next year

BANGKOK: -- Several major airlines including Thai Airways International are cutting long-haul flights into Thailand next year in line with a forecast 12-per-cent drop in the number of inbound tourists, said the Association of Thai Travel Agents.

ATTA president Apichart Sankary said that although the Tourism Authority of Thailand targets 17 million visitors next year, only 15 million may arrive.

Starting from today, THAI will suspend its New York-Bangkok service. The company has also reduced flight frequencies, re-routed flights with particular impact on its US operations and introduced other cost-cutting measures.

"Other airlines such as Lufthansa are also considering reducing long-haul flights between Thailand and Europe," said Apichart.

Thailand is expected to miss this year's visitor target of 15.7 million. ATTA, which encompasses inbound travel agencies, expects the number to reach only 15 million.

While domestic tourism will be more sluggish than last year due to political conflict, Apichart attributed the lower number of foreign visitors to efforts in Europe and the United States to lure tourists from the Middle East.

Maitree Narukhatpichai, president of Phuket Tourism Association, admitted that foreign tourists' bookings for the island this month had dropped 15-20 per cent from last year's level due to political tensions, which were driving away visitors from major markets.

Seni Phuwasethavorn, president of the Koh Samui Tourism Business Association, said the high season would not be as active as last year due to the higher cost of travelling.

For instance, the ferry fare from Surat Thani to the island will soon be increased by 20 per cent. Currently, Samui's hotel occupancy rate is at 60 per cent, down from 70-80 per cent in the same period last year.

Until the political tension are ease in Bkk, the economical vis the currency movement will not be stable thus it's heading south....it's the struggle between the "old elite vs new economic forces" and looks to be going on for a while till both side compromises. Meanwhile jai yen yen na.....:p:D

Positive June export nos, not just oil easing off has helped baht. Exports surged >27% yoy, upping 1st half export growth to >23% (eg still high prices for our staple rice). On political front, Samak gin gang has got reprieve with recent distraction with neighbours cambodia

Realistically, we couldn't have expected a free fall (after <24), not indefinitely anyhow.

Hi Norikasan55,

There is only one shop on the first level that sells 1-2-Call top-up cards. I can't remember the name of the place, but it's a small set-up just beside a provision store - enter the Complex through the door just beside the BKK Forex, then turn right once you're inside. It's just there. :)
