Can any bros tell me where to get good rates in Spore?

Newbie here.:o Thanks.

Think Arcade is good.

But all depends on how much you want to change. May not be worthwhile to hunt everywhere unless you change a lot.

Every 0.05 difference in rates = THB 50 for every S$1000/- you change

Eg.

Place A is 23.75
Place B is 23.80

For S$1000, you get THB 23750 in place A and THB 23800 in place B. The difference of THB 50 not very much.

Not sure about money changer near your hotel. But here is plenty or money changer in bangkok. The 2 wih good rates are Superrich (head office branch) and Vasu exchange.

If you can bring S$1000 notes, you get better rates compare to smaller notes.

In bangkok, you can always request for different denomination of THB. What I do usually is after I get my THB currency. I will take 4 THB1,000 note and tell hem to give me 15 X THB100 & 5 X THB500.

That's why Naemlo suggest you to go to Superrich to change.l

Small notes always come in handy. Especially when tipping.
If you want also can ask the money changer to give you some THB50 and THB20

Now i know whats super rich. Think bank no no for me. Maybe just change some from Sillypore. May need to pay cab fares etc etc on arrival at airport.
Maybe change S$100 in Singapore, THB2300+ should be enough for taxi and some balance in case of emergency. The rest you can change in BKK

Vasu Exchange, Grand Superrich & Thailand Superrich are all around 24.35-24.40

Arcade usually lower than this. Maybe 24.20-24.30

On the other hand its actually a small difference when you change 1K.

Eg.

Bro are U a “yellow” shirt ??? Just kidding.

Contra to what U have just said, the outside world view Thai economy has been a star performer these few years.
Look at all other commodities export based countries like OZ, Brazil,Indonesia, Malaysia and even India you know Thailand not doing too bad.

PM Yingluck is doing a fantastic job in a very divided kingdom with so many powerful rich with vested interests and axe to grind.

The following article first published by The New York Tomes was republished in the ST today :

Can Egypt learn from Thailand?

By Jonathan Tepperman
The writer is the managing editor of Foreign Affairs.

BANGKOK was rocked by anti-government demonstrations earlier this month - once a depressingly familiar sight.

But that bad news shouldn't overshadow the good. Disruptive protests may have been all too common in Thailand just a short while ago but, in the last two years, they've become an anomaly. The country has gone from a virtual wreck to a booming and relatively stable success story. Figuring out how it's managed to do that is important, and not just for Thailand's 65 million citizens. For if a place this polarised can pull itself back from the brink, other bitterly divided societies might be able to as well.

To get a sense of how far and fast Thailand has come, consider its recent past. Marketed to tourists as the land of a thousand smiles, Thailand spent most of the last decade fighting with itself.

The trouble really began in 2006, when the military, in connivance with royalists and the courts, overthrew populist prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The coup ignited years of running street battles between citizen armies of "yellow shirts" - defenders of the old, semi-feudal order - and "red shirts", Thaksin supporters among the rural and urban poor.

Political power changed hands four more times in four years. In January 2010, the police responded to enormous red-shirt protests by killing over 90 demonstrators, injuring 2,400 others and jailing hundreds. The economy went into a tailspin.

Then, in August 2011, Thaksin's sister Yingluck became prime minister. And today, barely halfway through her four-year term, Thailand looks like a different country.

According to Mr Ruchir Sharma, head of emerging markets at Morgan Stanley, the economic outlook is the brightest in 15 years: The currency is up, land prices have climbed and the stock market has more than quadrupled since 2008. Tourists have returned and the streets (despite the flare-ups this month) are mostly quiet.

So how did Ms Yingluck, initially considered a mere proxy for her exiled brother, do it? The formula turns out to be deceptively simple: Provide decent, clean governance, compromise with your enemies and focus on the economy.

Ms Yingluck understood that she'd never accomplish her broader agenda and improve life for the poor unless she could first calm the place down and complete a full term in office. And to do that, she had to give all Thais a stake in her success. So she began a bold economic stimulus and reform campaign. Some of her moves, like a 40 per cent minimum-wage hike and subsidies for car buyers, were aimed directly at her lower-class base. But others, such as US$67 billion (S$86 billion) of infrastructure spending and cuts to personal and corporate taxes, have benefited the wealthy as well.

She also sought to make peace politically. She has courted opponents, holding respectful meetings with the powerful and popular king - and even with the general allegedly behind the coup against her brother.

According to Dr Thitinan Pongsudhirak of Chulalongkorn University, Ms Yingluck has brought the elites on board by offering a tacit bargain: She preserves their privileges and they let her hold onto power.

Thus she has left the military alone, even recently naming herself defence minister so she could ensure that no one would mess with the army's prerogatives. She has avoided challenging the Constitution, including the infamous lese-majeste laws that ban criticism of the monarchy.

She has kept corruption, a perennial problem in Thailand, to a minimum. And she has ensured that her brother, whom the aristocracy still fears and loathes, remains in exile.

This, in many ways, is an ugly deal. It means Ms Yingluck must tolerate undemocratic checks on her power and the repression of free speech. Despite an amnesty law now being debated in Parliament, some of her red-shirt supporters are angry that she hasn't done more for the families of those killed and imprisoned by the military-backed government in 2010.

It's also a fragile bargain. Thailand's recovery could easily unravel. Die-hard yellow shirts have pounced on the Prime Minister's mistakes, such as a scheme to boost the price of rice that backfired spectacularly. Other dangers loom: The economy is still too export-dependent and, while everyone is getting wealthier, inequality is growing.

Ms Yingluck hasn't erased Thailand's dividing lines so much as papered them over, and the underlying power struggle could erupt again at any time - especially if her brother returns or if the king, now 85, dies. But the longer Thailand remains at peace, and its economy keeps growing, the greater the odds that real democratic politics will take hold, so that when Thailand does finally confront its divisions, it will do so through ballots, not street battles.

Indeed, the flaws in Ms Yingluck's grand bargain are part of its genius. The fact that everyone is irritated by the truce she's negotiated is a good sign, not a bad one: It means nobody is getting everything he wants.

That's how compromise is supposed to work. It may seem messy; it is. But it's the kind of mess that other countries like Egypt or Venezuela or Zimbabwe can only envy right now.

Will the baht and rupiah going to face another 1997 crisis kind of situation again? Investors pulling billions out of the region with talk again of US Fed Reserve stopping their money printing policy. Thailand is officially in a technical recession. Now waiting to see how low can it go....

too young and poor to have cheonged around this time. can't wait :D

but I kind of think all the Russian investment will prop up prices in Bangkok and pattaya. but maybe a new province or village will emerge to be the new cheap spot.

According to Thai DPM & Finance Minister, Thailand is not in a technical recession coz one of the reasons for slower growth was the long Songkran holiday? He also wants the Thai baht to weaken so as to stimulate more exports so can we expect the baht to weaken more in the coming weeks against the Sing $?

Report from Bangkok Post dated 6 September 2013 :-

Warning over fake ringgit in Southern Thailand

The Thai Association of Foreign Exchange is warning the public about the widespread of use of fake foreign currencies in Thailand, particularly in the southern provinces, where Malaysian ringgit is the most commonly faked note

Chanaporn Poonsuphirun, the association’s president said the counterfeit ringgit notes are very realistic, so difficult to differentiate from the real thing.

She said fake ringgit notes are being discovered from Chumphon down to the border with Malaysia, due to high numbers of Malaysian visitors to Southern Thailand.

Other fake currencies found in Thailand include Indian rupee and United Arab Emirates dirham.

She said the association is trying to educate employees working in exchange shops in the South to detect fakes. It is also training personnel in exchange shops nationwide about cancelled banknotes, so they avoid accepting notes that are no longer usable.

Currently, there are around 1,300 exchange shops operated under licences granted by the Bank of Thailand but there are also more than 1,000 shops operated without licences. The association is planning to work with the Central Bank to draw these unlicensed shops back into the legal system.

Ms Chanaporn said there is currently a shortage of specialist staff in the industry, because it takes at least two or three years to train a person in examining foreign banknotes. She said the base salary for a skilled worker should be between 20,000-30,000 baht a month.

The association said many businesses are competing against one another for skilled staff, so are attempting to attract the best workers through employee incentives such as profit sharing.

Let me clarify about withdrawing from Thai banks with a Thai bank ATM card.
Thailand is a big country. So much bigger than what we normal frog in a well Sinkies can imagine. So if u managed to open a Thai bank account good for you but plz remember that there are charges. IT'S NOT FREE like some bro said here.

Example... U open a Kaaikorn Bank account in BANGKOK. Any Kasikorn bank ATM in Bangkok u withdraw from is free. BUT if u travel to another province and withdraw from the same bank ATM there is A CHARGE about Bht20-30 per withdrawal.

UOB THAI and UOB SINKIEPOR. I was a UOB Sinkie account holder. When I withdrew from Thai UOB ATM there was a charge. It was no different from any foreign bank even if it was the same company. THIS NEEDS VERIFICATION. Best call UOB Sinkiepor to confirm!

Bros,

If you have a CIMB bank account in SG, you can use your ATM card to withdraw from CIMB Thai ATM Machines without any additional withdrawal service charge. Your withdrawal will only be subjected to the usual bank forex rate for that day.

This is the same if you withdraw ringgit at CIMB Malaysia ATM or rupiah at CIMB Indonesia ATM.

The only problem is that the CIMB ATM network outside Malaysia is quite small. Not easy to find in Thailand, Indonesia or SG.

Forget about UOB or DBS. Even if you use your UOB or DBS SG ATM card at an overseas UOB / DBS ATM Machine, you will still get charged the additional withdrawal service fee.

There is no benefit and its like the same fees you get charged if you withdraw from a KBank or Siam Commercial ATM Machine.

Hi Bro Sojo,

Then I think as Bro Indianmagicoil has said, better to call UOB SG to verify lor as he also kena pay the service charge.

Personally I never use my UOB Singapore ATM Card to withdraw in Thailand before but I did use it before at UOB Malaysia ATM (in JB) and still had to pay the service charge for withdrawal. :(

The only one I know for sure no service charge is CIMB. I used in BKK once and a few times in Malaysia also. No extra charges so far.

Unless they changed something since aug 2013, the 150 baht fee is not incurred. So far the rates have been decent as well, definitely can't beat those superriches.

Brother, Super Rich is in Bangkok so posting its rates here won't do any good unless u are in Bangkok today and now. And I believe the rate u r posting is for those who change $1,000 SGD notes.

For those who r in Bangkok now or want to use Super Rich as a barometer for Singapore exchange rates...

SGD1,000 = 25.05
SGD100 & below = 24.95

So USUALLY expect Sinkie rates to be a few points below their SGD100 & below rates. As always cavaet emptor & bona fortuna! :D

Right. How many blokes got 1k note (poor me not seen, nor had the good fortune to feel exclusive note). And are we changing family's fortune?

Yesterday at Clementi Mall was 24.9, for loose change bht5k the diff was 80 cents (vs 25). Factor in commute to Arcade, and expensive city parking -you maybe out of pocket (unless it's your inheritance you changing).

Point is, just be sensible and use the benchmark (agree some places are a rip off) to ensure you are not hard done by.

Also, SuperRich in Bkk seems to be ahead with rates (than bank kiosks). You can still get decent and marginally better rates than latter if you chance on small "mom and pop" shops/kiosks (as I had posted eons ago). It's all about competition, overheads etc. Just as in my last CNX forays, SCB had usual lousy rates and 100m away was this "local" joint with more bahts worth.

Am also not sure if we can expect to do way better than 25 soon, as jitters on QE in US is tapering off.

Correct ... Rates I am posting is for $1000 SGD notes but usually normal notes is 0.1 less than $1000 bank notes rates... right, posting for the benefit of brudders in BKK already or intending to come to BKK to exchange :D Sorry if I couldn't provide any rates info on SG changers becos old man me rarely in SG :D Cheers buddy !

Some useful info for Bros:-

Once tapering starts, THB will weaken as JPY will strenghten against USD because:-
Many THAI larger co have USD debt, so must long USD and short THB when taper starts
and
JPY strengthen as Japanese co short THB against JPY
Many large THAI co with foreign ops now doing FX Swaps.

Not that I am "black hearted", but THB weakening in Bros favour.

Sorry Bros, "long" means buy and "short" means sell.

THB will weaken slowly over the long run. Even THAI businessmen I deal with are getting out of THB.

Off course in short-term there will be ups and downs.

For me, a rate above 25 is a good bargain.

Raffles Arcade (Singapore) and Superrich (Bangkok) will offer the best rates.

Using SGD as base currency.
Once at THB25.00 (SELL) rate or above can show hand by buying.
When at THB24.80 (BUY) rate or below can take profit first by selling. :D
