Oh Brendan, this season, man.

How many life line chances do we get?

That said, it’s the hope that kills us:o

A quick word on Chelsea making it to the CL final. Really pains me to see Kante rejuvenated and compare this to the failure that is Naby Keita...really thought Naby would be our Kante, so very disappointed, more so when we badly needed him to shine this season:(

Here are the remaining key matches for the various teams.

Liverpool: Leeds (away), Man U (away). The rest are bottom sides.

Spurs: Everton (away), Man City (away), Leeds (away), Leicester (away)

West Ham: Chelsea (home), Everton (home). Rest are bottom sides

Chelsea: West Ham (away), Man City (away), Arsenal (home), Leicester (home), last match against aston villa (away) may not be easy too.

Leicester: Last 3 BPL matches are Man U (away), Chelsea (away), Spurs (home)

West Ham has the best schedule. They face lower sides and they do not have European matches. So can rest totally. Chelsea still have a FA Cup against Man City. Chelsea likely to progress in Champions League too and their remaining BPL matches are tough.

We have a strong chance to finish top 4. Leicester is not that strong. Still relying a lot of Jamie Vardy but Brendan Rodgers is a choker. Last night he lost the match against West Ham by suspending 3 players. That is why his top midfielder James Maddison did not play. BR rather risk a top 4 spot to make a point.

I wrote this almost a month ago. BR always choke. He must be regretting dropping his best players to make a point in the match against West Ham then. BR fooling around with the potential CL revenue.

We are still in the running for 4th spot but we have to help ourselves. Other teams can keep dropping points but if we don't capitalise, no one can help us. Just a reminder of Leicester's last 3 opponents.

Yes, fair comments.

One thing though, seems like Ole may 'throw' the Leicester match because of the punishing change in schedule. Hopefully Villa will beat United, which may then get Ole to push harder against Leicester.

Can't see United 'throwing' their match against us though:rolleyes::D

City choked last night against Chelsea but title as good as decided.

MU will go all out for the EL trophy I'm sure, not taking risk with injuries. so hoping they will rest players against us.

Hopefully Pool can cut a deal with him n release him early. No point keeping him already cos his injury is permanent. This Keita is worst than Sturridge + Matip combined!

Man U kelong..... field reserve team to let Leicester win.

Expected. By letting Leicester win, they can prevent us from finishing in the top 4. The recent 2 draws where we conceded late goals really hurt us. If we don't qualify for top 4, Liverpool will rebuild this team which isn't a bad thing for me. This current team has reached its maximum potential.

So nice to see the return of Bobby Dazzler
Take a bow Mo, what joy when he scored and the captain's armband was the cherry
And what about our 6th & 7th CBs eh?! Could have collapsed but instead stood tall

Also have to say, never seen such shitty biased refereeing at Old Toilet between us and scum. McTominay should have been sent off for what he did to Sadio. Anthony Taylor is a disgrace.

Oh yeah on a lighter note, gather Souness came to blows with Jaimie Redknapp over the reversed penalty decision:D( Roy Keane sided with Souness!)

Not sure why Mane gets angry for not starting? Mane performance went south from December onwards.

Andrew Rpbertson had not been playing well also cost Liverpool.

Alisson also not his usual safe hands.

I get this feeling this whole saga will only be decided on the last match.

Be careful of what you wish for. Did you check out who our last opponent is? Our bogey side

Actually, the main difference is our front 3 did their normal job. They ran into spaces, look hungry and took their shots. Previously, all the good chances were wasted and the pressure fell on the defence. Sure, we are weak in the CB areas but if our strikers don't score, it is unfair to blame the defence when we lose.

So glad we won after Manure threw the match against Leicester. They must have thought they can kick out of the the CL by winning this morning. OGS has been a very lucky manager so far. His tactics have been pretty negative. He has 2 good goalkeepers and hardly any notable injury to his defence and yet his side conceded 1 more goal than Liverpool who is having the worst defensive crisis in living memory. With the crowd likely to be back next season, I wonder how many matches he can survive before losing his job.

Silly season is beginning again. A lot of transfer rumours now and it seems Manure and Liverpool are fighting for the same players. If you were a player, will you want to play for Klopp or OGS? Plus Manure is bounded by the liability that is Pogba. Sibeh lazy in defence and tracking back.

Well, Leicester won the FA Cup. That means there is a grudge match element in their league meeting with Chelsea. Given the British drinking culture, I think Leicester will likely lose in the Tuesday meet up with Chelsea. Chelsea will be eager to prove they are a better team. They dominated the FA Cup and have better team stats.

Personally, I am hoping for a draw or a Chelsea loss. We need Chelsea to drop points.

"It's a funny old game, Saint"

Spurs legend Jimmy Greaves famous comment to Liverpool legend Ian St John on the Saint and Greavies TV Show pre EPL days.

Could not have said it better myself. Saint must have had a huge smile wherever he is last night.

The Gods must be crazy.

Alisson scores a worldie header in added time. Unbelievable on so many levels. Man this even better than sex.

Klopp likens it to a Giroud header but I recall our great King Kenny scoring in such a manner many moons ago.

And what a beautiful post match interview by Alisson. So humble and moving, simple and profound. YNWA Alisson.

Credit to John Achterberg(Liverpool GK Coach) for calling out Alisson to go up, so too Sadio.

Also great corner whipped in by Trent, kinda like Beckham.

Overall our finishing let us down again though. Instead of hitting top corner perhaps our guys should hit more low and hard balls at the net.

But can't fault us for never giving up.

Big shout out to Thiago. He was pure class. Can't wait to see a consistent MF of Fabinho/Henderson/Thiago next season.

The Window still remains slightly open, thanks to our latest legend, Alisson.

We go again next against Burnley.

Allison's goal is amazing. He is now the only goalkeeper who has scored for Liverpool. Setting his goal aside, our front three is clearly not as sharp once again. Sigh. We should be blowing teams away with the chances we are creating.

There are comments that Burley's burly forwards will man-handle Rhy Williams. That is a real worry. High crosses from the flanks that allow their big forwards to push Rhy Williams around to score headers.

After we blew it against Newcastle

We blew it late against Leeds too.

I am not so worried about our CB pairing. I am more afraid our front 3 will fire blanks again. Their lack of goals places a lot of stress on our defence. I also notice they are more selfish. Mane and Salah seldom pass to one another when the other party is in a better goal scoring position. Like 2 strangers playing on the same team at times.

Strangely, we have yet to launch next year's kit. Isn't it a tradition for us to wear next season's jersey on our last match? Sort of like promoting next season's jersey. So far, no news.

Off to the Championship Big Fat Sam, where you belong.

Mixed performance, still not finishing them chances but after a truly horrible season with just one game to go, I will take them 3 valuable points and 3 very valuable goals, thank you very much.

First time Leicester move out of the Top 4 this season, I think? Could not have come at a better time for us.

Not only that we are now only 5 points off 2nd. Indicator of where we should really be but for our terrible injury list, bodes well for next season.

Back to last night's match...

Thiago bossed it once again. We are now seeing glimpses of the Bayern Munich Thiago. He literally oozes class and has dragged us back into the Top 4 game over the last few matches when all was almost lost.

Nat Phillips take a bow son. Cometh the hour, Cometh the man. Nat has stood up and taken control of our horrible CB situation when all appeared to be lost. Also, so happy for him to get his first PL goal for us. Reminds me of ex-Arsenal skipper, Tony Adams.

So happy for the Ox. Can see Klopp still has faith in him and he repaid a tiny bit back last night. With a strong pre-season and if he stays fit and injury free, who knows the Ox might be a 'new' signing next season? Let's hope. For now I would say this is the best quality I have seen from the Ox since his Tik Tok dance performance with his pop star gf:D

Salah seemed to have left his scoring boots at home at last night. But maybe he did this to motivate Harry Kane against Leicester for the Golden Boot final countdown on Sunday:p

Finally credit to Klopp for sticking with young Rhys at CB and keeping Fabinho at DM. Problems with Rhys are obvious but the benefits of having Fabinho in MF together with our boss man Thiago are vital under the circumstances.

Think the biggest headache for Klopp on Sunday now is whether he starts with Gini. Wijnaldum was really poor last night and not for the first time mind. Sense Gini is not only thinking of his next club but also Holland/Euros in June rather than the Reds final push for Top 4.

Anyways, at least it is now in our hands.

Roll on Palace on Sunday. At Anfield with 10k Reds fans in the stadium. Whatever happens its going to be emotional!

European continental footie last night was quite exciting, especially the battle for La Liga.

So happy for Suarez - £4.4m signing from Barcelona to A Madrid ; 21 goals in 32 games; this guy still has it going:cool:

Also Kieran Trippier showing Harry Kane what happens when you leave Spurs:D

Congrats too for Lewandowski. Beating the great Gerd Mueller's 40 goal record with 41 Bundesliga goals in one season. Truly amazing, this guy is a legend and groomed by klopp no less:cool:

A lot of things still to be played out tonight.

Hoping Lille can do it in the Ligue 1 just like A. Madrid did last night.

Also hoping Juve don't get a CL spot in the Serie A; I am cheering for Atalanta, Milan and Napoli to get the remaining 3 spots.

And as for the gripping finale to the battle for the 3rd and 4th CL spots in the EPL, would be lying if I did not admit that I am nervous. Quite a few permutations here, crazy stuff, just like our season.

That said, all I want to see from our lads is to be brave, show courage, press and fight to the very last minute of this match, give it their all and hold their heads up high whatever the outcome.

Come on you Reds!

We fought really hard to be within CL contention. After the late draws against Newcastle and Leeds, I thought it will be really hard to qualify. Please don't forget we are playing at home and there will be 10,000 fans in attendance. 10,000 cheering fans helping us to qualify for the CL. Big lift. Crystal Palace is sort of in a holiday mood now. Out of relegation, the manager is leaving. Many of their players will be out of contract... which means they do not want to be injured. 17 players will be out of contract. Crazy situation. Check out this link. https://www.transfermarkt.com/crystal-palace/vertragsende/verein/873

Sorry to repeat this again. When I saw Leicester's last 3 opponents, I knew we are in for a chance if we can keep within striking distance. Having a 4 goal difference is definitely a huge advantage. Leicester's match is though as Harry Kane is fighting for the top scorer award (probably his last match for Spurs too) and Spurs is in contention for the new competition that is the 3rd tier Europa Conference League. It is a different tournament from the Europa League. I don't see Leicester catching up on the goal difference. They may not even win.

Let's enjoy tonight's match. I will be watching. Whoever is watching can just type your comments here and let's chit chat during the match.

After our match ended, I switched over to Leicester's match and watched the goals. Basically their goalkeeper Kasper lost them the match. First goal should have been saved. 2nd goal was a shocking own goal by Kasper. Keeper came out to punch the ball during a corner and punched the ball into his own goal instead. Made the scoreline 2-2 then.

The team mentally collapsed after that and conceded 2 more late goals. If only they knew 2-2 Is good enough to be in the CL. Chelsea was 2-0 down then.

In my earlier tributes for the season, forgot to mention Alisson:o

What Alisson did against West Brom makes him a legend, more so because we then got 3rd. Thought the win at OT was the game changer but that Alisson goal was the final momentum push belief which finally got us over the line.

Ray Clemence is still my all time fav Liverpool GK, probably because I grew up watching him but Alisson is fast catching up. The Napoli save on our way to winning the CL in 2019 and now this West Brom goal definitely places Alisson as one of our great GKs:cool:

Go home now to Brazil with peace of mind to pay respects to your dead father, Alisson.

Ditto to Klopp now returning to Germany to finally say goodbye to his dead mother.

Painful season but at least the both of you together with the rest of the Redmen have ended it on a high:cool:

As an aside, would also like to compliment West Ham. Can't stand Moyes but have to give him credit for what he has done at WH this season. Many had WH down in the relegation zone after last season's poor performance but what Moyes has done to turn them around is remarkable. Think if Declan Rice was not injured earlier, WH might still have been in the mix for Top 4 yesterday.

On the flip side, Spurs, Arsenal and Everton have been disappointing. Not that I am complaining, especially when it comes to the Toffees!

Discuss where Liverpool need to strengthen?

IMO - midfield and defence

Since Gini departed, Milly and Cpt Henderson already passed 30s.

Henderson, Fabinho, Milner, Curtis, Ox, Shaq.

I hope Liverpool signed 1 proven midfielder and 1 understudy.

Defence need to spruce up since Matip is injury prone. Nat Philips and Rhy Williams can be understudy.

Hope signed 1 proven defender.

How Jurgen Klopp pulled off 'the impossible' and saved Liverpool's season
Liverpool looked destined to miss out on Champions League qualification - but a few crucial changes turned their season around

By
Chris Bascombe
24 May 2021 • 10:42am

It’s worth reminding ourselves how forlorn Liverpool’s hope of qualifying for the Champions League looked when they were beaten 1-0 at home to Fulham on March 7. It felt they had spent too long gazing into the abyss of their title defence, and the abyss was gazing back.

They had lost six consecutive home league games, their longest ever such run, and the first team to do so in the Premier League since Huddersfield Town in 2019. A winless Anfield run had extended to eight games - the last time any Liverpool side was so fallible at home, they had finished bottom of the First Division (in 1954). Most worrying, there seemed no obvious solution because while the primary focus was on Liverpool’s defensive absentees, they had stopped scoring. Excluding penalties and own goals, Liverpool had failed to do so with each of their last 115 shots at Anfield in the Premier League.

Liverpool were ten points behind Leicester City, but the talk was no longer about how to catch them. In an interview with German newspaper Bild, Klopp seemed resigned to his club’s fate.

“I like to be an optimist, but in the league it is almost impossible to qualify,” he said.

Behind-the-scenes, club officials were readying for unknown territory. Never mind missing out on the Champions League and a minimum £50 million in that European bonanza, an even worse scenario beckoned.

“It will be an absolute nightmare if we end up in the ****** Uefa conference league,” confided an Anfield official. No wonder there were some higher up the chain of command trying to start their own European tournament with guaranteed mega-millions.

Yet as the gloom descended, the roots of recovery were already in place.

Why Fabinho was the key to Liverpool’s revival
On the day Liverpool lost to Fulham, midfielder Fabinho was a 76th minute substitute. The cameo was a tentative but critical step in his and Liverpool’s recovery. Although it was barely referenced at the time, Klopp’s side looked better in those 14 minutes than in the previous eight weeks - think of it as Lazarus' first muscle spasm. The Brazilian’s injury a month earlier had added to Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities because he had spent the first half of the season as an emergency centre-back - one of most of the 19 centre-back pairings before Easter - with Klopp calculating he had plenty of midfielders to cover his relocation.

The Fulham loss can be seen as the Liverpool manager’s ‘enough is enough’ moment as he decided there was more to be gained with his number six in his preferred role. Three days after Fulham, Fabinho ran the game in the second leg of the Champions League round of sixteen game against RB Leipzig, and remained there for eight of the last ten Premier League fixtures, starting with an away win at Wolves. Liverpool failed to win only two of those remaining ten games. It is no coincidence that when points were dropped at home to Newcastle and away to Leeds United, Fabinho was forced back into defence due to an injury to Nat Phillips. Based on the evidence of Liverpool’s grand finale, Phillips probably would have challenged Diego Llorrente to prevent Leeds’ 87th minute equaliser, and risen above Dwight Gayle to prevent him teeing up Joe Willock’s injury-time strike for Newcastle. Phillips emerged as an unlikely, heroic figure - first alongside Ozan Kabak and then youngster Rhys Williams. But the stability came from the man just in front of whatever inexperienced duo picked. Fabinho proved to be Liverpool’s most influential player - the gatekeeper and the pivot. Beyond Anfield, there is suspicion people still do not realise how good the South American is. When he plays in midfield, everyone around him looks better and Liverpool perform like champions.

Welcome to Liverpool Thiago Alcantara. We had been expecting you…
Everyone benefited from Fabinho being restored into midfield. The rookie defenders were protected, and Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson became increasingly confident they could scamper upfield in the knowledge Fabinho and/or Georginio Wijnaldum were covering their tracks. Then there is Thiago, the playmaker who had spent the first part of his Anfield career injured, only to be introduced in a dysfunctional hybrid role where he was compelled to be a defensive shield as well as link to the front three. Because of that inauspicious start, Thiago’s debut season has been the subject of much revisionism, the slightest critical remark deemed heresy. He was never that bad in his first few months, but given the hype when he signed it is not contentious or inaccurate to say he was underwhelming. Of course there were mitigating circumstances, but the player and his manager acknowledged some of the criticism was valid. They said it as it was.

“I'm not happy with my performance since I came here,” Thiago said on March 11.

“It's been a tough period for all of us because we didn't in our worst nightmares expect we are now in this position in the Premier League.”

Klopp was similarly honest.

“It’s not quite clicking, but we will see the best of him,” said the manager.

“I don't think we saw it already, but that is not a problem. We are 100 per cent convinced we will because he is a world-class player.”

From there, every minute Thiago spent alongside Fabinho freed him to play ten yards up the pitch and stop dashing back towards his goal to collect reckless yellow cards. It meant Thiago started to resemble last year’s Uefa midfielder of the year.

By the final day against Crystal Palace, the player described as ‘the closest you will see to Xavi Hernandez’ upon his arrival was worthy of that billing. Thiago was sensational in Sunday’s 2-0 win, bending the tempo of the game to his will, passing sharper and quicker and giving the kind of virtuoso performance that put one in mind of prime time Xabi Alonso. As an appetiser for next season, it had the 10,000 crowd salivating, especially as the link-up between Thiago and Roberto Firmino hinted as the start of a flourishing on-field relationship.

Cometh the hour, cometh the leaders
Captain Jordan Henderson missed half the season. Vice-captain James Milner suffered several injuries. The other vice-captain Virgil van Dijk was out from October. Liverpool had to look elsewhere for leaders and found them in Alexander-Arnold, Wijnaldum, Robertson, Thiago, Alisson and, of course, Fabinho. Alexander-Arnold’s influence grew as the season progressed, most noticeable in those critical away wins over Wolves, Arsenal, Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion, where his set-piece delivery enabled Alisson to score the most memorable Liverpool goal of the season in the 94th minute.

That last gasp contribution piled the pressure on Leicester City and Chelsea, who had by then surrendered their significant points advantage, failing to make hay when Liverpool dropped points to Leeds and Newcastle. It meant they headed into the final games nervous, while Liverpool - who also had Diogo Jota back from injury and Mohamed Salah chasing the golden boot - began their final stretch feeling they had nothing left to lose and carried forward the winning momentum in their last two decisive games.

There had been a feeling at Anfield a month ago that so long as Liverpool were within touching distance of Leicester in the final straight, they had a chance. That was because of the horrendous fixture list for Brendan Rodgers’ side, with trips of Manchester United and Chelsea, and a tricky final day visit of Tottenham Hotspur. The FA Cup Final was always going to be a distraction in Leicester’s top four pursuit, too. It was not a case of Leicester imploding. They won at Old Trafford and could have dropped points in those other games at any point of the season. So it proved as Liverpool's six point deficit with four games remaining became a two point lead, with Klopp improbably finishing third. Chelsea's unexpected dip was a bonus. It should be deeply worrying for everyone else that even when so wounded, Liverpool ended the campaign only a few wins from being title challengers.

Ultimately, Klopp will reflect that he oversaw the resurgence by sticking to the tried-and-trusted formula of ensuring as many of his best players were fit and in their best positions at the same time. His faith in his players to deliver once circumstances became more favourable never wavered. The same can be said of owners Fenway Sports Group, who endured a difficult year but should be commended for strangling at birth any misguided suggestion Klopp was under internal pressure during the team's lowest points. Skill, confidence, and the mishaps of their top four rivals did the rest.

IMO - that's correct decision.

I thought we will buy him, play him for a season and sell him for a higher price. Can make a profit... just like Minamino. Afterall at age 20, he will not be taking up a slot in our squad right? I think under 21 is still considered youth team?

Just groom the present 3 CBs in Davies Phillips n Rhys.. Klopp should give Davies a chance since Pool had bought him already. Don't find Konate that impressive unless Pool can get a cut price deal for him.. Would be better if Pool rotates among 4 CBs next season.

I know it’s only a YouTube clip but it’s very impressive, the ease in which he brings the ball out from the back.

The bottom line is Konate is extremely good when fit, also only 22 years old.

I hope his trajectory is the opposite of Keita's. Naby was a potential star but unfortunately appears to have become an injury prone washout instead.

Konate hopefully shrugs off the niggles and fulfils his potential.

Perhaps we can return Keita to Leipzig and get Konate in a swap:D

Phillips definitely keep. Rhys needs a lot more game time experience. Loan him out. Davies I suspect we bought to make a quick profit. So probably keep him and give him some game time to market. Also helps that he is from England.

Apart from defence, think we need to find a replacement for Gini and another forward player as well.

Last season Liverpool were really unlucky to be against opposition players, referees and VARs.

VVD was whacked by Everton Pickford and nothing happened.
VAR disallowed at least 10 Liverpool goals.
Most refs will disallowed Liverpool goals unless is clear goal.

Liverpool lost points to Fulham, Newcastle, West Brom, Soton, Chelsea, Burnley, Brigthon, Leicester and Everton.

A season Liverpool can forget because long term injuries to 3 senior CBs.

Davies was bought before Kabak loan deal confirmed. Also because Preston wanted the Van Berg deal.

Klopp sees players during every training and he can feel if players ready to play first team.

Konate deal is sealed and will signed. No chance for swap deal with Keita.

I am sure Liverpool will sell Keita if there is a buyer.

We also need good back ups for our left back and right back. We cannot expect Robertson and TAA to keep clocking up the minutes and maintaining good form for an entire season. Robertson needs some rest.

Next season we will play even more matches due to the expanded CL. Plus lose players to African Cup of Nations. We need more players.

Think Ed Woodward just extended Ole's contract at United. Best news I have heard(if true) since we finished 3rd on Sunday:p

Said this before on this forum and will say it again, United will never win a big trophy(PL & CL) with Ole at the wheel. He is tactically clueless and seems to pin all his hopes on his big players(Bruno, Pogba, Cavani, Rashford etc) to save the day. When this does not materialise, United are screwed. Look at what happened just before extra time, instead of Ole giving a pep talk to his players, I saw Mike Phelan giving them instructions instead:rolleyes:

When I heard Conte had just left Inter after winning the Scudetto no less, was worried he might go to United. Even Zizou and Poch might now be available.

Very glad United still seem happy with Ole though. Long may this continue!

On Zidane, PSG is a possibility. Juve is NG though as Allegri already appointed once again.

Tuchel is another interesting one and I also rate him. Tough one tonight for him though because think City have the momentum. That said the ball is round.

I'm not excited about this purchased. Feel that the $ is better spent on an attacking midfielder. Pool has Phillips n Davies as back-ups, no need to add more CBs @the moment unless Pool has other plans for the 2 of them.. Rueben Neves from Wolves will be a good buy to replace Gini.

Pool has been quite unlucky with all the players they had bought recently cos majority are injury prone. Phillips has proven he's a reliable CB, isn't it better that Pool groom him to be an even better defender rather than risking on Konate? Let's hope Konate will not be another Keita.

Welcome to Liverpool, Ibrahima.

On the ball his technique is excellent. Off the ball (IMHO) his tackling is a little erratic. This will improve with age and experience. Not forgetting his speed.

I think we've made a gamble here. 35m probably seen as a calculated risk.

If he shakes off the niggles we're looking at one of the best CBs in the world for the next 10 years. Yes, think Konate has that much potential.

A successful combo of VVD & Konate would make our high line defence a formidable first line of attack as well. Alternatively, Klopp could even go with VVD-Konate-Gomez at the back and really push forward our wing backs.

Interesting to see what happens now to Phillips(great guy and no doubt he was immense in the second half of the season but long term think he is too slow for what Klopp wants at CB) , Rhys and Davies.

Next season going to be very interesting as Chelsea under Tuchel shall definitely challenge for the PL. Credit to Tuchel as has Chelsea very well drilled. What they lack though is goal scoring power, at least at this moment in time. Also have to say Kante was awesome. Great guy and so humble.

Edwards can slash down the price and weekly wages. We need someone to back up Thiago and make the killer pass. Thiago cannot play in every match. Coutinho's strengths are playing the killer through ball and shooting outside the penalty box. He will also be perfect for Spurs. What I really hate now is Keita likes to dribble. By the time he finish with his dribbles, he has given defenders time to close down Mane and Salah. Keita.. is very 1 dimensional

Coutinho's biggest mistake is to join teams with no fast strikers. Salah and Mane will be looking to run into spaces where Counting can thread his killer through passes. Messi and Suarez are too old to outrun defenders. We also face an issue with opponents play a low block and pack their penalty area. With Coutinho playing, he draws defenders out of the penalty area as the defenders know they have to get out to close Coutinho's shooting space. That gives Bobby space in the penalty box. We also have no regular goal scoring midfielder in our squad now.

Coutinho was young and he makes mistakes. At 28, he is in the prime of his career. He has won the Bundesliga and Champions League (I think) with Bayern Munich. Proven winner. If anything, we have to thank him for giving us Allisson and VVD.

Somehow got this feeling Hendo gonna missed the penalty. He doesn't looked confident n true enough his shot was weak n not well placed. Goalie easily saved it!
I would prefer Gini to go to PSG, this to show Barca that not everytime they can simply poach any player they want!

Better if he goes to PSG. Barca is heavily in debt and has asked their players to take a pay cut and pay deferment. At least with PSG, their owners are super rich and future pay is more assured. If Gini goes to PSG, he can help us psycho Mbappe and tell him how Anfield or Klopp is like.

Find that Gini has not been fairly treated @Pool. He was getting only 80k per week n he was playing n contributing so much! Players like Ox n Keita didn't even touch the ball n they're paid 120k. I do feel for Gini the frustrations he might be having inside him n moreover Pool didn't even offer him a good new contract ! Probably he must've been very disappointed that's why he chose to leave.

When Ox was leaving Arsenal and when Keita was leaving RB Leipzig, they were hot properties with many suitors. So definitely we have to offer good terms to attract them over. When Gini came over from Newcastle, Newcastle was relegated and we offered him an escape route to remain in the EPL.

That's life isn't it when it comes to work and love? Hotly contested items rise in value. In the 5 years he was with us, I don't recall any other team trying to recruit him. As Gini's boss, if he didn't try to leave me or if no one else is trying to poach him, why will I offer him better terms? If anything, blame his agent for not marketing him to other teams or pushing Liverpool to pay him more. He can sign a pre-contract with another team since January but despite his agent pushing him to Barcelona, PSG or Bayern, no big team signed him. If no one wanted him then and no one die die want him now, why will you pay him more?

Heard PSG paying Gini alot of cash

"According to Dutch publication De Telegraaf, the 30-year-old will earn €10 million per year after tax at PSG, which is worth around £8.6 million – or £165,000 a week."

This will make many players unhappy if Liverpool pay such cash to retain him.

I think the American owners use a performance based contract. So his weekly pay may not be the highest but he may get performance bonuses like games played, match win bonuses, tournaments won etc. So when you add them up, can be quite a lot too especially given that Gini won EPL, CL, Super Cup, World Club Championship.

Lorenzo Pellegrini would be a decent acquisition I feel.

Seems like a quite versatile player, has played deep and as a #10; looks like he has a bit of energy and dynamism about him, but can drift in & out of games. I guess that’s because Roma is not very good.

If he came here, he would be more a Henderson ‘replacement’ than a Gini one & I do not see him breaking into the first XI immediately, however, he would definitely bring a slightly more attacking profile to midfield.

Interesting to see what we do.

Looking at the fixtures, the winner of the England v Germany match has a pretty good chance of reaching the Final because apart from the Dutch, the rest of the favourites like France, Belgium, Portugal and dark horses Italy and Spain are on the other side of the list.

A lot depends on whether Southgate screws things up on selection and tactics.

Southgate is not that a good coach imo..
He hasn't been able to get the best out of his players so far. Partnering Rice n Phillips in centre midfield is totally lacking in creativity as both are just good @ sideway n back passing. Judas Sterling starting in every match is baffling even though he's the only scorer so far. I hope Grealish starts ahead of him in the coming German match.
The only reason I hope England goes through is that it adds to some excitement in this tournament..Not a big fan of England though.

Not a big fan of England though.

In 2017, England won the under 17 and under 20 World Cup. Brewster was top scorer at the U 17 World Cup. England is supposed to have a golden generation coming up. Many of the U 17 and U 20 are beginning to be household names too.

I think they have a wrong coach though. A top coach probably won't want to be the national team coach. Too boring and I suspect the pay is low.

But both Southgate and his players need to be brave and daring against the Germans.

Would like to see only 1 DM, Phillips. Drop Rice for Grealish. Drop Sterling and play Foden and Saka on both sides. Also start Mount. Would also like to see Sancho thrown in as well.

Also did anybody watch the Belgium v Italy match? In particular a young Belgian lad called Jeremy Doku? Even though Belgium eventually lost, this lad put on an amazing performance.

Apparently Liverpool were close to signing Doku when he last moved from Anderlecht, but he eventually did not come to Anfield as he wanted to play and not sit on the bench, so he went to Rennes instead.

Price then was already 26m Euros. This wonder kid's price must be at least double that now:eek:

Liverpool's pre-season programme will begin on Monday July 12 with a training camp in Austria.

The Reds will start preparations for the 2021-22 campaign in the state of Salzburg, with a number of senior players set to report for duty on day one as part of a 34-man squad.

Jürgen Klopp’s side will also undertake work across Austria at a base in Tyrol later in the camp.

New signing Ibrahima Konate is among the players due to begin training on Monday following his transfer from RB Leipzig.

Details of Liverpool’s warm-up fixtures, and subsequent broadcast details, will be confirmed in due course.

Assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders said: “We look forward to going to Austria again for the start of our pre-season. All the conditions to prepare the team there are just at a very high level.

“We will use this to go back to basics. When you ask a lot from your players you have to give a lot as well – and we find all of this in Austria.”

Players reporting for pre-season training on July 12

James Milner, Adrian, Ben Davies, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip, Nat Phillips, Divock Origi, Ben Woodburn, Rhys Williams, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kostas Tsimikas, Caoimhin Kelleher, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones, Taiwo Awoniyi, Marko Grujic, Harvey Elliott, Loris Karius, Takumi Minamino, Jake Cain, Leighton Clarkson, Marcelo Pitaluga, Harvey Davies, Billy Koumetio, Owen Beck, Kaide Gordon, Mateusz Musialowski, Tyler Morton, Conor Bradley.

Its coming Home.

More like its going to Rome.

I was slowly starting to rate Southgate as this Euros progressed but now back to my previous view of Gareth, not good enough, too scared and frightened.

Really feel for that young lad Saka, no way he should have been taking that pen. Why not let Sterling, Grealish, Henderson, Stones, Shaw or even Phillips take the pens first? And why didn't Southgate bring on Rashford and Sancho earlier, at least in ET?

After England scored they just tried to shut up shop. Very bad move.

Top marks to Mancini and his Italian team. Totally deserved to win this Euros. Donnarumma is a beast. PSG smartly picking up top talent to make another stab at the CL.

Really hate this guy for what he did to VVD but must say Jordan Pickford played his best game of this Euros in the final.

Finally the real final was the semi between Italy v Spain. Macini and Enrique being the best managers in this Euros.

Italy the much better side ultimately, justice was done. England no match in terms of ball control, technique n keeping possession. Spain is the only side better than Italy in ball possession. Why Grealish didn't start the match was baffling? Saka is still not @the top level yet. Rice n Phillips were never good enough right from the beginning, they couldn't even control the midfield n both players were very similar in style. I just hope Pool doesn't buy Declan Rice. Even Mason Mount was overrated, good a club level but only a very ordinary player playing for England, not even a single goal from him...
Italy the deserving winner!

Apparently UK bookies have got City as favourites to retain the PL, followed by Chelsea, Liverpool next and then United. Very early days though.

Also seems like Nat Phillips might be going to Brighton for £15m.

I would put Chelsea first. They have bought well and Thomas Tuchel is a good manager. I don't trust VVD, Matip and Gomez. VVD and Gomez have not played a warm up match right? I don't think VVD can play a game every 2-3 days so soon after such a major injury. If NP goes, he will have a steady season while we may run into an injury crisis again mid-season. He should stay.

If any player unhappy then should be sold. No player bigger than the club.

Then that means many players will be unhappy if Henderson is sold. The team knows Gini is underpaid for the work he does on the pitch and how often he plays. They can also see how much Gini is earning now and the length of his contract. Many of our top players are crossing 30 soon and they want Liverpool to commit to their last big contract. If not, let them leave and find a big contract like Gini. Even Salah has been talking about renewing his contract for some time.

Sadly, our team rebuilding is non-existent. Mane and Firmino has started to decline last season. Yet we are still describing our front 3 as world class. FSG's idea of moneyball is to buy cheap players with great potential. So far they have bought Konate. Whatever they may be buying also missed out on pre-season with us so the acclimatisation period will be longer.

Keita is going to be fit before AFCON and be injured after AFCON.

escobar43535

I would also put Chelsea first if they are able to get a reliable top quality striker like Haaland or Lewandoski.

That said if City get Kane, they are also going to be well up there again.

Hate say this but even United look to be buying quality players. Then again I don't rate OGS.

As for Liverpool, I am not so worried about our CB situation. Think it shall work itself out regardless of whether Phillips stays or not.

The bigger problem seems to be our front 3 in particular Sadio and Bobby. Like you said they both look to be on the decline. Hopefully they still have another season or two to shine because we can't be just relying on Mo. Jota is a good addition no doubt but still not enough if we want to seriously challenge for the PL again.

Actually we need more goals to come from our MF to supplement our attack. Unfortunately Fabinho and Thiago are not goal scorers. Technically very good but not known for goals. Which means we are left with Henderson, who is also not known as a goal scorer.

So unless we purchase a known goal scoring MF, we are stuck with trying our luck to get something from our bench with Ox, Keita and Curtis.

On the rebuilding bit, can't really blame FSG because Covid has thrown a spanner in the works. Just have to hope we are able to replenish our finances this coming season and then see where that takes us next.

Must say I thought "wow" when I read that rumour. Chiesa looks very good and does indeed seem to be the right fit for Klopp's type of attack force. Hope the rumour is true because regardless of whether we actually get Chiesa it would at least show that FSG post covid are still prepared to give Klopp his marquee signing should the need arise.

Back to the here and now, the just completed sale of Harry Wilson to Fulham for £12m means that Liverpool have now made £33.3m in transfer sales this summer, hopefully with more still to come. Taiwo Awoniyi (Union Berlin) and Marko Grujić (FC Porto) between them brought in £17m, Liam Millar joined FC Basel for £1.3m, and Kamil Grabara moved to FC Copenhagen for £3m.

Wilson has also been out on loan three times, which saw loan fees of £5m paid between Derby County, Bournemouth and Cardiff. That means that the Welsh winger has actually made Liverpool £17m in all having graduated from their academy.

Given the signing of Ibrahima Konaté set Liverpool back £35m, they have almost broken even so far. Elsewhere at Liverpool, still to go, potentially, are Xherdan Shaqiri, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi, who between them could possibly demand close to £40m in transfer fees.

That would mean a possible total recoup of around £73m. Nat Phillips (£15m to Brighton ) could soon edge the dial towards the £90m mark.

Michael Edwards been busy again this summer. Fingers crossed he can pull another rabbit or two out of his magic hat to add more top quality immediate impact players to the Liverpool squad.

Not sure how Liverpool can spend such money?

If true then good news to bring Euro 2020 winner to Anfield. Think is virtually impossible.

Now I am sure after offering new contracts to Trent, Fabinho, Alisson and Salah, maybe a big name signing.

I think Liverpool do not want to upset those current players which they deemed important to keep before the big signing.

I am sure many MC players will be unhappy with Grealish big signing especially Sterling, etc.

Tbh don't have a clue whether the Reds shall eventually make a marquee signing before the summer transfer window closes bro.

Somehow i am back to being pessimistic again as i dont think we have the cash unless we are able to sell first and i dont see this happening because other clubs are also cash strapped because of covid.

On a positive note, looks like our preseason training is going quite smoothly. VVD finally getting some much needed game time, Keita seems to be fit and strong(just have to hope for the best on this one!), Konate fitting in nicely, Elliott might have a chance to stay instead of being loaned out again, Tsimikas looks pretty good and even Minamino appears to be playing quite well. Also there is a young kid by the name of Kaide Gordon who looks to be one for the future.

Really looking forward to our opening game against Norwich.

Given how our competitors are buying players and rebuilding their teams for the many seasons to come, we are tying players on big contracts till their 30s. I don't understand the logic.

1. Looks like Liverpool relying on the trusted players who won them the CL and PL.
2. Unless transfer signings by end of wndow which is 31 Aug.
3. Dun forget we going to lose Salah, Mane and Keita for AFCON.
4. Chelsea signing Lukaku, MU signed Sancho and Varane, MC signed Grealish
5. If MC can sign Kane then should retain PL
