P4201, with 12 people on board, had lost contact with Singapore air traffic control at 11.22am, said CAAS. The aircraft departed Pankal Pinang at 10.24am Singapore time and was expected to arrive in Batam at 11.58am. Its last known radar position was about 40 nautical miles southeast of Tanjung Pinang. The M28 Skytruck plane lost contact with air traffic control during what was supposed to be a 1.5 hour flight in western Indonesia. Indonesia news outlet Detik reported that the light aircraft “crashed in the waters" off Kabupaten Lingga, Riau Islands. "The data given is true," said Riau Islands Police chief Brigadier General Sambudi Gusdian. "Fishermen found clothes, suitcases and air plane seats we fear belong to the plane," national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar told AFP. On Saturday night, Singapore Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said the Republic of Singapore Air Force activated its Super Puma helicopter, Fokker-50 and Chinook, with a C-130 on standby to assist with the search. Wreckage was sighted at about 3pm, Dr Ng said. "The SAF will continue to work closely with Indonesian authorities to find survivors. Our prayers are with the families of the missing crew," he wrote. “Two ships are awaiting clearance by the Indonesian authorities to assist in the search and rescue efforts,” sad CAAS. The CAAS Crisis Management Centre has also been activated. Indonesia has a poor aviation safety record and has experienced several air disasters recently. Last week, an Indonesian army helicopter crashed on Borneo island leaving three crew dead, while in November a cargo plane crashed in Papua region killing four. - CNA/AFP/xk Click here to view the whole thread at www.sammyboy.com. |
