7,000 police to be deployed for Bersih rally

KUALA LUMPUR: About 7,000 police officers will be on duty during a massive Bersih rally planned for the Malaysian capital on Saturday (Nov 19).

Members of the electoral reform group have vowed to press on with the Bersih 5 rally despite the arrest of Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah and secretariat member Mandeep Singh.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Amar Singh on Friday urged the public to steer clear of major gathering points in the city. Seven hotspots were labelled off-limits to rally-goers, including the iconic independence square Dataran Merdeka, the national mosque, Dataran Maybank and the area outside Sogo shopping mall. Police also plan to divert traffic from 58 routes in Kuala Lumpur from 7am on Saturday.

The Red Shirts, a rightwing group aligned to Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and his ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), has vowed to confront protesters.

The likely conflict between the Red Shirts and Bersih supporters - also known as Yellow Shirts - has prompted extra security measures. Malaysian police have warned that tear gas and water cannon could be used.

"Besides the Red Shirts and Yellow Shirts, we were also informed there are two more groups, the Black and the White Shirts who are planning their rallies tomorrow, all at the same time, same place," said the police chief of declaring certain areas off-limits. "That's why we are doing this, we hope the people will not join the rallies."

Mr Najib has warned both the Red Shirts and Bersih supporters against any violent confrontations during the demonstration this weekend, telling the official Bernama news agency on Thursday that "that's not the culture that we will want to be accepted as our way of life in Malaysia".

Authorities have maintained that both the Red Shirts and Yellow Shirts contravene the Peaceful Assembly Act for failing to obtain permission for the use of the rally venues, even though they have alerted police about their planned gatherings.

"I take this opportunity to advise those who wish to attend the rallies - don't act outside the limits of the law," the Star quoted Deputy Inspector-General of Police Noor Rashid Ibrahim as saying.

Bersih has said it will dispatch 1,400 security personnel to protect rally-goers.

Former Malaysian premier Mahathir Mohamad, who is spearheading a movement demanding that Prime Minister Najib step down, has urged Malaysians to join the demonstrations on Saturday.
