Police warn of scam calls with automated voice messages impersonating SPF officers
Posted 14 Nov 2016 17:36

SINGAPORE: The police are warning members of the public to be wary of phone calls impersonating its officers.

The recipients of such calls would first hear an automated voice message in English or Mandarin, with instructions to enter a number. A Mandarin-speaking operator would then ask for their personal information, or tell them to go to a police station with their identification card, otherwise police officers would be sent to their residence.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) raised the alert in a Facebook post on Monday (Nov 14), and said in some cases, those who received the call were instructed to visit a website which looked similar to the SPF’s official site, or carried an SPF logo.

The police made clear that those calls were not made by its officers and that the SPF does not use automated messaging systems to contact members of the public.

“Such calls are typical scammers’ tactics,” SPF said. It advised people to take the following precautions when they receive such calls:

• Ignore such calls and the caller’s instructions
• Do not provide your name, identification number, passport details, contact details, bank account or credit card details

The police added that those who have received such calls, or who have information related to similar scams, can submit details online or lodge a police report.

To stay informed on the various types of scams, the National Crime Prevention Council has compiled a list at https://www.scamalert.sg/
