LTA rewards $1.34m to SBS Transit and $504k to SMRT for improving bus waiting times

SINGAPORE - Public bus operators SBS Transit and SMRT have been rewarded for improving waiting times of buses, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on Monday (May 9).

The Bus Service Reliability Framework (BSRF) trial took place from June to November last year and covered 34 bus services. 27 of them achieved good wait times with regularly spread out bus arrivals.

LTA added that both operators have sustained improvements in reliability through enhanced management of the bus fleet and the hiring of more service controllers.

According to the statement, SBS Transit earned $12,440 per service per month for reliability improvements for 18 services while SMRT earned $12,000 per service per month for improvements across seven services.

In total, SBS Transit earned about $1.34 million while SMRT earned $504,000.

Meanwhile, new bus service 308 serving Choa Chu Kang will be launched on Sunday (May 15). One more new service will be introduced during the mid-year in Bedok and Tampines.

This latest update follows LTA's announcement that nine new bus services were introduced in the first quarter of the year. They are SBS Transit Services 134, 150 and 382G/W, SMRT Service 805 and City Direct Services 666, 667, 668, 669 and 670.

Besides additional services to shorten bus waiting times and overcrowding, 15 more buses were deployed to 13 existing services in the first quarter. This added 185 weekly peak-hour bus trips.

LTA added that the operators also improved seven bus services by deploying higher capacity buses along sectors with heavy ridership.

This provided another 35 weekly peak-hour trips.
