SINGAPORE: A travel agency in Tampines was fined S$25,500 on Wednesday (Apr 13) for operating without a valid licence for more than 4 years, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said in a statement on Wednesday.
According to STB, RTW Air Services failed to renew its travel agent licence when it
lapsed in December 2009, and was found to be operating without a license during a check in April 2014. It has since applied for and obtained a travel agent license, STB said.
RTW was convicted of 17 charges under the Travel Agents Act, with another 33 similar charges taken into consideration in sentencing.
Eva Air's website lists RTW as an affiliate, and states that the carrier owns 49 per cent of RTW as of Mar 5 this year. The listed address of Eva Air's Singapore office is also identical to RTW's, as listed on STB's online database of licensed travel agents.
RTW's current licence was issued on May 14, 2014, according to the database. STB said travel agent licenses are valid for up to two years.
The tourism board advised the public to "exercise due diligence when making arrangements for their travel" and to check its online database for the latest list of licensed travel agents in Singapore.
The maximum penalty for a travel agent that carries on its business without a valid licence is a fine of S$10,000 and imprisonment of two years.
