SINGAPORE: A man was injured and 350 hotel guests were evacuated after a fire broke out at the Mandarin Orchard on Tuesday night (Mar 15).

Two Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at around 11.40pm. It sent two fire engines, two Red Rhinos, four support vehicles and two ambulances to the scene.

The injured man is a 69-year-old Caucasian who suffered injuries to his left arm and a minor head injury. He was taken to Singapore General Hospital, SCDF said.

Another four people were attended to by paramedics at the scene, but declined to be taken to the hospital.

An eyewitness, Hebby Deng, said the guests were evacuated to nearby *SCAPE.

The fire involved the contents of a kitchen on the hotel’s sixth floor, and was extinguished by firefighters using 2 waterjets within 30 minutes, SCDF said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Responding to a query from Channel NewsAsia, a hotel spokesperson said the fire was contained in a separate kitchen of the hotel’s main tower. Its in-house emergency response team immediately responded to the fire while the authorities were alerted, he said.

Guests were escorted back to their respective floors at about 1.20am on Wednesday after the premises were deemed safe by the authorities, the spokesperson said.

On Monday, a fire broke out at Tang Plaza where the Singapore Marriott hotel is located. About 100 people were evacuated in the incident, but no one was injured and the hotel was not affected.
