I like the letter writer's suggestion to fine overpaid fuckup PAP MPs. I also like his suggestion that voting should not be compulsory in by-elections, as it could give SDP a better chance of winning.

MPs who step down for the wrong reasons should be fined

Despite the decisive action taken, some Singaporeans are angry that Mr David Ong’s personal indiscretion forced him to resign (“PAP took decisive action over David Ong, says Chun Sing”; March 14).

This is the third such case in four years. Surely lessons should have been learnt, especially by the People’s Action Party (PAP) Members of Parliament (MPs), as integrity has been a PAP fundamental.

The situation is aggravated because Mr Ong did not express contrition initially, citing a personal reason for stepping down.

The Prime Minister’s letter last year to PAP MPs on the rules of prudence and proper conduct has fallen on deaf ears. It is disconcerting that ministers and MPs active on Facebook remained silent on the issue. There should have been public condemnation. It was also not the right time to eulogise his political career and achievements.

To mitigate the unfairness of the public paying the price for someone’s indiscretion, legislation should be passed to fine MPs who step down for the wrong reasons, such as Mr Ong.

Also, voting should not be compulsory in a by-election because, unlike in a general election, the Polling Day is not a public holiday.
