Train services between Joo Koon and Boon Lay MRT stations on the East-West Line were disrupted for more than two hours yesterday evening because of a traction power fault. Around 65 passengers had to get off an eastbound train and walk to Pioneer MRT station.

A train had stalled between the first station Joo Koon, at the western end of the line, and the next stop, Pioneer MRT station.

It has since been taken out of service, according to updates on SMRT's Facebook page.

SMRT, which did not respond to media queries during the disruption, said in a statement at 10.03pm on its page that train services had resumed by that time.

Free bus and shuttle bus services were available between Joo Koon and Jurong East stations until 10.34pm, according to its social media updates.

Train services on other parts of the line, from Pasir Ris to Boon Lay, were still running.

SMRT first tweeted that there would be an extra travelling time of around 20 minutes in both directions between Boon Lay and Joo Koon, which are separated by Pioneer station, at 7.49pm yesterday.

At 8.15pm, it tweeted that there were no train services between the stations in both directions.

Two minutes later, it added that commuters needed an extra 10 minutes of travelling time between Boon Lay and Jurong East stations.

Then at 8.40pm, SMRT said it was working to recover the service.

A tweet from commuter Vincent Li after 9.30pm said that a train "stuck" at Jurong East station was getting very packed.

In its social media update announcing that services had resumed, SMRT said it is "investigating the cause of the traction power fault and (is) sorry for the inconvenience caused".

SMRT announced last month that it was upgrading the electrical system of the North-South and East-West lines.

The project comes as the operator grapples with a rise in power- related breakdowns. On Nov 25, a circuit breaker fire caused service on the North-South Line to be disrupted for more than two hours during morning peak hours.
