Man arrested for suspected involvement in online scams

Police said that since January 2015, they had been receiving reports regarding victims being asked to transfer deposits as part of a payment plan to secure prospective loans online. "After obtaining the deposits, the suspect is believed to have become elusive and did not extend any loans to victims," police said. The suspect then posed as an advertiser offering vehicle rental services online. Similarly, after the victims transferred their deposits as instructed, the suspect became elusive and did not deliver the vehicle promised. Following the reports, officers from the Clementi Division conducted extensive investigations and eventually established the identity of the suspect, who was arrested at Fajar Road on Friday. Preliminary investigations revealed that he may be involved in at least nine other similar cases, in which the victims have lost more than S$3,000, according to police. The suspect will be charged in court on Saturday for the offence of Cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code. If convicted, he may be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in jail for each offence.
