Singapore extends censorship to scene at Taiwan’s Golden Melody Award

admin / 2 days ago June 29, 2015

The Singapore Government censored a protest scene from the Taiwan’s prestigious musical award event, showing instead a message by Starhub deeming the segment of the programme “not suitable for broadcast”.

The censored scene was a short footage of an award-winning band carrying a banner saying:
“今天拆大埔,明日拆政府. Fuck the Government”
Translation: “Today they tear down Dapu, tomorrow we tear down the Government.”
Dapu is a residential housing area forcefully cleared by the Taiwan Government in 2013 to make way for factories despite the protests of the residents and civil rights activists.

Singapore rank 153rd in press freedom and its media are heavily censored. The Singapore Government is against press freedom because it endangers the legitimacy of its governance and causes them to lose votes. Singapore is also one of the few countries in the world to have a Ministry of Information, and only one media company, the Singapore Press Holdings. Bloggers and writers who refuse to be censored by the Singapore Government have faced numerous defamation suits and sedition charges. Just last week, a 16 year old Youtuber has been sent to a mental asylum because he posted a video criticizing the Prime Minister and his recently-deceased father.
