Athletics: New Singapore records set in all four women's jump events this year

By Chuan Limin

Singapore athletes are taking a great leap forward, with all four national records in women's jump events broken this year.

Michelle Sng cleared 1.84m in the high jump at the Philippine National Open-Invitational Athletics Championships and Rachel Yang soared past 3.83m in the pole vault at the Malaysia Open in March.

Lynette Lim rewrote the triple jump mark with a 11.94m effort at the National Inter-Schools A Division competition in April while Eugenia Tan dazzled with her 5.94m long jump in the Singapore Athletics Track and Field Series 4 last week.

Said Sng: "It was a proud moment when I got the message that Eugenia broke the long jump record. That all four records were broken this year says a lot.

"Records are meant to be broken. It's great for the sport if you see others coming close to it."

The long jumper, along with three other national athletes - race walker Edmund Sim plus long-distance runners Jeevanesh Soundararajah and Banjamin Quek, were present at the launch of the Asics Suntec City store on Thursday.
