Rsaf to fly "missing man" formation to tribute lee kuan yew

RSAF TO FLY "MISSING MAN" FORMATION TO TRIBUTE LEE KUAN YEW Post date: 27 Mar 2015 - 10:44pm  [Photo: Illustration of the Missing Man Formation taken from Edwards Air Force Base] In loving tribute of our founding Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew, The Republic of Singapore Air Force’s Black Knights will be flying a Missing Man Formation during his State Funeral on Sunday, 29 March 15. The Missing Man Formation is a tradition that dates back to World War I, and is used as a solemn aerial salute to honour deceased dignitaries or military aircrew. During the State Funeral, four Black Knights F-16C aircraft, in national colours, will fly in the shape of a 'V' towards City Hall. As the V-formation approaches City Hall, one aircraft will leave the formation and head off to the west, signifying the deceased’s final flight towards the direction of the setting sun. The other three aircraft will continue to fly onward. What is left is an asymmetric flight of three fighters with a visible gap where the departed aircraft used to be.
