Minister for Social and Family Development, Chan Chun Sing, explained during a community visit that Singaporeans should also be conscious of issues which may affect Singapore as far ahead as 2065 and beyond.

He spoke about how Singapore is celebrating SG50 next year but especially for young Singaporeans, they should be aware of and be able to think about world developments which may impact Singapore in another 50 years’ time.

Minister Chan was speaking in front of over 160 students from secondary school to university in Woodlands and he urged them to adopt the “4 As”: awareness, analysis, application and alternatives.

He said that young Singaporeans should not be “a frog in a well” and they should always be aware of developments around the world.

Some students gave examples of the melting ice caps and the Ebola crisis and Minister Chan added other issues like global economic crisis and how these issues can affect Singapore.

Mr Chan said that Singaporeans must be able to analyse these issues, be able to apply lessons from them to Singapore and also be able to think of alternatives which may improve Singapore’s resilience to such global changes.

"Never keep our eyes off the ball of what is happening elsewhere which may impact us," he said.
Minister Chan said that students must take charge of their own futures to ensure that Singapore can still be successful 50 years on.
