Ex-officer gets 400 years for fraud

Bangkok: The Criminal Court Thursday gave a reduced sentence of 400 years imprisonment to a former administrative police officer who had defrauded immigrants of 91,200 baht. Pol Sgt Maj Mano Nucheu, 39, a former administrative police officer who had defrauded immigrants of 91,200 baht.

Pol Sgt Maj Mano Nucheu, 39, a former administrative officer at Bung Kum police station, was found guilty of taking part in the collection of fees from 157 immigrants totalling 72,200 baht. He also took another 19,000 baht of bail surety in three cases.

The incidents occurred between 2001 and 2004 when Pol Sgt Maj Mano was an officer with responsibility to oversee fees and prepare reports about state income.

The court ruled that the evidence showed the defendant was guilty of fraud, therefore the court gave the strongest punishment of a five-year jail term for each case.

With a total of 160 cases, the total years of imprisonment was 800. However, he had confessed and had already returned the embezzled money so the punishment was reduced by half to 400 years.
