PRCS ON SOCIAL VISIT PASSES OPERATE BROTHEL OUT OF RENTAL HDB IN WEST COAST According to a report by WanBao, a prostitution ring has been found to be operating out of a rental HDB flat in Westcoast GRC. It was reported that the neighbours of the 5th floor flat had no idea that the 3 room flat next door was being used as a brothel. It is understood that it was run by a syndicate who also hired “brothers” to keep a look out at the void deck for any trouble. The girls would advertise their services through WeChat and many of them are only on social visit passes in Singapore. This information was revealed when a WanBao reporter went undercover to the flat and posed as a customer. He described that the door was answered by a scantily dressed PRC girl who explained to him that she had only arrived in Singapore the day before. The living room was dark and he was given a choice of which room he wanted to use. There were different rates for rooms with bathrooms and rooms without. Before the ‘transaction’ was started however, the reporter told the girl that he wanted to wait for a friend before starting. She responded that he’d have to leave or the “brothers” downstairs might be angry. The reporter from WanBao also got information that the girls were rotated about every month when their visit passes expired. People on social visit passes are not permitted to work in Singapore and therefore such brothels are clearly illegal. This also means that the women do not go through health screenings and yet the use of technology such as WeChat allows them to reach out to many men. Despite these women openly advertising their ‘services’ it seems that the authorities are unable to track them all down and stop such illegal brothels from operating.
