Thumbs up When a PAP constituency is infested with rats

Authorities working to control rat problem in Bukit Merah

SINGAPORE: More than 10 rodents' nests were found in the Bukit Merah estate recently, and authorities are now working with the area's town council and the neighbourhood to control the rat problem.

A resident in the area claimed to have seen a rat biting bread displayed on shelves outside a convenience store.

Responding to queries from Channel NewsAsia, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said it has asked the store to display all food items indoors, other than items that need to be kept in the fridge.
NEA said it did not find any rat problems in the store.

It also did not find any inappropriate handling when it came to food storage or waste disposal. It has asked the store to keep the area outside clean.

NEA added it is stepping up inspections, from once to twice a week.
NEA said it received a complaint from residents on 22 May and started looking into the problem the next day.
It found rat droppings in front of the store and nearby areas at Block 28.

It then found a nest at the neighbouring Block 11.
In general, each nest is occupied by two rats.

Tanjong Pagar Town Council said it has worked with NEA to eliminate 14 rat nests over May and June.

They have also caught six rats so far.
They added they are monitoring the situation closely.
