SINGAPORE - A total of 100 cartons of contraband cigarettes were found hidden in a sports car driven by a 26-year-old Malaysian male early this morning.

The man had driven a Malaysia-registered sports car to the Woodlands Checkpoint in the wee hours of Friday morning.

Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers discovered a hole in the rear speaker compartment and found the contraband cigarettes inside.

The total potential Customs duty and GST payable for the cigarettes is estimated to be about $7,700.

The driver was taken in by officers at the Singapore Customs for further investigations.

Buying, selling, conveying, delivering, storing, keeping, having in possession or dealing with duty-unpaid goods are serious offences under the Customs Act and the GST Act.

Repeat offenders can be fined up to 40 times the amount of duty evaded and/or jailed for up to six years.

The vehicle used in conveying the contraband can also be forfeited.
