One million dollars were raised on Saturday for NTUC FairPrice's food voucher scheme, at the organisation's first walking event. The money will help needy families purchase daily essentials through FairPrice vouchers

Held on Saturday at the Marina Barrage to promote a healthy lifestyle and family bonding among Singaporeans, the morning event called "FairPrice Walks With U" was attended by some 5,000 participants and 1,000 FairPrice staff. The guests of honour included Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean and People's Association chief executivedirector Ang Hak Seng.

NTUC FairPrice Foundation had pledged to donate $100 to the scheme for each registrant but decided to double its contribution after all 5,000 places for the walk were filled up.

More than 20,000 needy families and individuals benefit from the voucher scheme each year. Since 2002, FairPrice Foundation has contributed $11 million worth of FairPrice vouchers to the Scheme. The vouchers are given to all constituencies in Singapore through the grassroots organisations.
