A Summer's Weekend In Haikou

Part 1

Jack and James went to Haikou to find some bonks and laughter. Back came Jack with a smile and James came laughing after.

A nolstagic poem recited by the English educated with a twist to satisfy a different context like in our case.

Hi, I am Jack, the wandering reveler. I have been traveling around for work and I managed to squeeze some time into the limitations of my schedule for some leisure. After an absence of almost 9 months, partying in places either to mediocre to speak of or too common to be unique, I have finally found a new location worth narrating.

It all started on a bored weekday in the office surfing the net and I was prompted to enter the jetstar website for some budget tickets. Looking around, I saw nothing interesting except the usual Jakarta, a location I have almost tried everything worthwhile, Bangkok, too common to be special, a no brainers‘ sort of merrymaking venue, Ho Chih Minh... but I am going over there in less than 3 months all expenses paid for by company. Then, I saw Haikou. I scanned around and found the ticket price reasonable and reserved one for the trip arbitruarily. For God’s sake, a round trip ticket costs only 200bucks and perhaps I should just endeavour into the realms of culinary experience instead of any forms of merrymaking.

Scouting the backpacking websites revealed that this place seems like an enclave for the lesser trades. Knowing someone who might be keen to join, I hesitated no longer and called him to inform him of my impending trip. As usual, the procrastinator failed to grasp the cheap tickets and the prices inflated over by 50 bucks which to someone like him a big deal. James said, “But it’s already 200 over dollars.“

Re: A Summer's Weekend In Haikou

Part 2

“I told you to be quick, didn’t I?“ I retorted without pulling any punches. We have been acquainted for more than 6 years and James is known for his tendency to do the right things at the wrong time, largely due to his notorious characteristic; procrastinating.

Perpetual recollection is not necessary to recall the various stupidity James has ever exhibited during our friendship. He was chastised by my universally understandable frustration over his inexplicable stupidity when I realised he squandered every penny of his meagre 5000 dollars annual bonus at Marina Bay Sands, several months after I pushed him to open an account with UOB Kayhian for some sensible investments. To rub salt on wound, it took him 1 year to fill up that form and mail it back to his broker with plenty of pushing. “You could’ve made some profits with that 5K you incinerated. It could’ve been 5.5K or 6K today, or if you made losses, it could be 2.5K now, better than being a pauper today with absolutely nothing.“ I recall telling him off.

It took him another week to finally save that 50 dollars and get a Jetstar ticket to Haikou on a Jetstar promotion. I told him to prepare about 5000RMB for the trip if he intends to indulge reasonably. Something I realised he was incapable to do so later.

Re: A Summer's Weekend In Haikou

Part 3

One day before the trip, we agreed to meet at the airport at 6am for the half past 7 flight and he was as usual, late. I checked in and walked into the waiting lounge only to have him coming behind 30 minutes later. We had some breakfast at Burger King as I proceeded to brief him of some of the dos and don’ts for the upcoming trip. Knowing his lack of capability to discipline himself, I warned him repeatedly on several issues.

“Do not go for free lance girls. Do not even attempt to ask them to come into your room.“ My words seemed to fall on deaf ears and this frustrated me tremendously. “We go as 2 and will return as a duo. So don’t do anything stupid.“ He brushed me off and said that we can always take a look. The free lance as he said were reported online being cheap, RMB300 only.

“Are you having hearing deficiencies? Do you know what risk entails if you get a free lance to come into your hotel? I have been warned by experienced Haikou revelers that some of these freelance prostitutes are scammers and some guy will come knocking on your door demanding you to hand over his ‘wife‘ and pay him some money as compensation or risk arrest. Whatever it is, don’t do it! Don’t take unnecessary risks just to save 50 or 60 sing dollars. Do you hear me?“ I got rather irritated by his nonchalence.

“It’s all right, nothing will happen.“ James and his trademark nonchalence sometimes infuriates. It is only his extreme loyalty to friends that redeemed him, otherwise, I will pull no punches when I have to kick him out of my solidarity.

Re: A Summer's Weekend In Haikou

Part 4

The almost 4 hour flight landed smoothly minus the frequent racket caused by the Chinese nationals onboard. Meilan International airport is a puny little one with very modest human traffic, perhaps the summer heat was too much to bear for a vacation in China even for the locals residing overseas.

We hopped into a taxi after agreeing to a RMB60 fare and made our way to the hotel almost 30 minutes away with little congestion. The first impression of the hotel was ghastly. Renovation work was in progress and the advertised WIFI was non-existant. Of course, I wouldn’t have booked this hotel if I were to be the one doing the reservation. It was James as usual, trying to save a few bucks getting the cheapest possible hotel. A mere RMB188 per day costing slightly above a hundred dollars for the next 3 nights.

I was pissed off as I told James before the flight that I made arrangements to meet friends, female friends specifically for tonight’s partying session in one of the most hyped clubs around. And Wechat was my only means of contact them. James as usual wasn’t even concerned not realising the prospects of having to spend the evening alone. I had to push him to get out of the hotel to find WIFI or buy a Chinese SIM card. He took it really easy without realising that we are already in the mid afternoon and I desperately need to get in contact with the girl I was supposed to meet in the evening.

For the record, the girl is a personal friend of my Hainanese neighbour and she will bring along some other female friends to join us in the night’s activities.

Re: A Summer's Weekend In Haikou

Part 5

With much pushing, James finally reluctantly arose from his petulant complacency and followed me across the road to acquire some form of methods to contact the female friend I had for the evening.

As we roamed along the streets still caught within the ensnares of the nolstagic architectures of the 80s, we caught sight of a mall and decided to try looking for a local SIM card instead of wifi. To our disappointment, we found neither coffeehouses nor retailers that carry sim cards.

"Take it easy... why are you so frustrated?" James as usual poured his woes trying to catch up with my sense of urgency.

"Do you know that if we cannot contact the girl, tonight, you and I will have to drink alone." I replied trying to gouge the complacency congesting his sensibility.

After some walks and buckets of perspiration, we came to this claustrophobic shop along the main road selling and repairing mobile phones. We approached the shop and bought a SIM card at RMB30. James however did not buy it, again due to his complacency.
