Bro. acm25, you are not alone. Freak not. :)

Surprisingly your first thought is to start a small business? Is it because you feel you could not work for people? Or you are thinking big thus too focused in earning big money? :)

10k of retrenchment benefits is really low....indeed what job are you hold previously? And what is your age? My friend got retrench last year and the pay out was like 200k, he was the sales director in a MNC.....:D:D:D

Agree with you bro, 10k to start a business in SG is quite hard, unless a small online operation selling clothes/accessories...but still need time to grow

Actually best advice for TS would be to go explore opportunities overseas.

Well, I might have some lobang in Cambodia, just PM me loh:o

I started my first business with $5000 so I'm sure $10,000 would do the job today.

It has to be service related and not capital intensive.

I'd say it's time to hunker down and start eliminating expenses.

Can we have more info about your situation? E.g Married w/kids and previous job history/qualifications?

This'll help us get a better understanding of your current issue.

Hi bro, sorry to know u are being retrenched.
if u want to start a business think of the following.

1. do u have any products/services to market now.
2. where/who are your target groups.
3. how well u know this product, this industry and market.
4. capital required or investors/partners.
5. u should already have reasonable interest or ready buyers now in your products/services even before you begin your business proper.
6. how to keep it sustainable for long term.

without a solid answer to all 6 or more (if any other bros can suggest), i guess its better to find another job, 10k in a bad venture can quickly disappear in days.

and beware of being overly optimistic as it clouds your proper judgement to risks and can make a person irrational.

all the best to u!

10k is for u to tie over 4 to 6 months family expenses while u r looking for new job .... it will dried up easily if u never manage well ... b prepare for jobless for 6 months or more in current SG that prefer more on FT .... just an adv use yr 10k wisely

Thanks all brothers for the valuable advice.

Me from media industry, in my 30s. Just feel that waiting for payday is a torturous procedure. Why not risk it all and be my own small boss?

I am willing to travel overseas and work, bring my small family along. Not a worry.

One bro pm me. I am sorry, could u kindly send me ur pm again? It's flooded.:D

I am going to be retrenched soon too, from what I know. I am retrenched not because I am poor performer, but they needed to cut someone and I am the target.

My thought process is more along the line of looking at multiple options and figuring out which is the best option based on the financial and family commitments I have.

For doing business, you need a clear plan, 10K, where is it going to go? dollar by dollar, next, what is the return from the money you spent. Not a projection, but how much can you really make? If you don't have any income coming in but just projections, then you have a problem.

Next, do you have reserves that can support you? etc...etc...etc..

I am looking for other jobs and at the same time looking if it is possible for me to do business with my skill set. small, service base, with very little capital outlay.

I am thinking I just have to try one by one and hopefully one of them works.

In the meantime, I am updating myself on all areas that are relevant for me, so that I am top of my game.

The problem is the older you get the more experience you are, its hard to find jobs of that level, also age is a unspoken consideration.

Anyway wish me luck! =)

Better? What if you are a top performer and they cut you but kept the non top performer around?

Sometimes, you are just a pure statistic, for all the PR a company does, you are ultimately a statistic, a number to evaluate and decide if cutting you will meet the number they need to satisfy to reduce the total cost.

I hope this little story here but marked the history can lift bros. up a little higher, including myself. :)

*****Abraham Lincon failed in business aged 31, lost a legislative race and 32, again failed in business at 34, had his sweetheart die when he was 35, had a nervous breakdown at 36, lost congressional races aged 43, 46 and 48, lost a senatorial race at 55, failed in his efforts to become vice president of the U.S.A aged 56 and lost a further senatorial contest at 58. At 60 years of age he was elected president of the U.S.A and is now remembered as one of the great leaders in world history*****

Just find another job with different pay in different industry if you can. I know it hurts you as the pay may be much lower and you may not be familiar with the new industry, but the thing is if you start a small business with $10K there is no guarantee the plan going to work and you may lose all the money in the end.

*****Whenever we doubt our own ability to achieve, it is worthwile pondering the obstacles that others have overcome. To name a few...

"Napoleon overcame his considerable handicap, his tiny stature, to lead his conquering armies across Europe."

"Winston Churchill was a poor student with a speech impediment. Not only did he win a Nobel Prize at 24, but he became one of the most inspiring speakers of recent times."

It is not where you start that counts, but where you choose to finish*****

Coming Soon....A new Start....

I feel the timing is right to move from this current place of employment as I am currently rotting and not going anywhere even though I am top performer, and hope that I find another one that will take me to the next phase of my career and life.

Please wish me good luck and whatever else necessary....:)
