Unprotected oral sex (cunnillingus) although considered low risk for HIV, but other Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) such as Gonorrhoea, Syphilis or Herpes is possible.

The risk of HIV transmission through unprotected oral sex increases if there is contact with body fluids such as semen, vaginal fluids and blood but not saliva, with the presences of sores and broken skin.

The person who receives oral sex is at lower risk than the person who performs it.

French kissing is not a known mode for HIV transmission. It is only with the presence of bleeding gum or ulcers in both parties that can pose a low risk. Herpes, especially type 1(cold sores) can be transmitted through kissing.

HIV is transmitted through unprotected sex and exchange of body fluid.




The window period for HIV is between 1 to 3 months. A test done after 3 month is conclusive.

You can go for a HIV test 1month after exposure and retest at the 3rd month for a conclusive result. You can also screen for Syphilis and Hepatitis B from a blood test.


Each STI has different incubation periods:
e.g.
Gonorrhoea - symptoms appear 2 ~ 7 days after infections. A person has discharge, pain while passing urine. A urethral smear has to be done.

NGU - 1 ~ 3weeks after infection, similar symptoms to gonorrhoea infection.

HIV/AIDS - 1~ 3months (window period), blood test to confirm.

Hepatitis B - 3 months after exposure, blood test to confirm

Syphillis - 1 ~ 3 months, blood test to confirm.
