Thumbs up PM assures Moulmein Kallang residents they will be taken care of

An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

SINGAPORE — Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong tonight (Aug 8) assured residents of the soon-to-be-defunct Moulmein-Kallang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) that his People’s Action Party (PAP) team will continue to care for them no matter what constituency they are in.

Under the new electoral boundaries report, Moulmein-Kallang GRC will be absorbed into four constituencies: Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, Tanjong Pagar GRC and the newly-created Jalan Besar GRC, which will also take in the current Moulmein Single Member Constituency (SMC).

“Many of you will be happy because Jalan Besar has got a historic name, a historic memory to it... We will also look after Moulmein, wherever you may be, whichever constituency you belong to, the grassroots leaders will be there, the advisers will take care of you, and will make sure that it continues to do well and continues to progress,” said Mr Lee to 6,500 guests tonight at a National Day dinner hosted by Moulmein-Kallang GRC and Whampoa SMC.

He added: “However the boundaries are drawn, the grassroots leaders and advisors will look after you… I hope you will work together, give your support to the grassroots advisers and grassroots leaders so that together we can make Singapore better, so that together we can celebrate many more happy National Days to come.”

Mr Lee also pointed out that the constituency’s area is steeped in rich history, with the Civic District, Kampong Glam, and 92 Kampong Java Road, where founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was born. The Government has preserved a lot of the area’s history and culture, but at the same time they have also modernised the area as well, with new flats and community clubs, he said.

He thanked MPs and grassroots leaders here whom he said have worked hard to improve the environment, infrastructure and facilities as well as in building community spirit, he said, noting that they have been doing so not just over the last five years but for many years before that.

“Let’s continue making it better, let’s continue making sure our children have a bright future,” he said.

Minister for Communications and Information and Moulmein-Kallang Member of Parliament (MP) Yaacob Ibrahim, in his speech, also thanked the residents for their support and feedback over the last four-and-a-half years. He said the advisers have worked hard to bring about improvements in physical infrastructure and introduced programmes for the benefit of the residents.

“This is the kind of support that we want to build upon as we move forward,” he said.

Mr Lee said National Day this year is a special one, as the nation is “celebrating 50 years of progress, prosperity and coming together”. The past 50 years have not been an easy journey, he noted.

He paid tribute to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, “who had decided that we would be a country, who decided that we would be successful, who decided that we would make the effort, make our way and show the world what Singapore can do”.

He also thanked the pioneers of Singapore, whom he said had given the late Mr Lee and his team their full support and worked hard to create Singapore. Inviting the pioneers to stand so that everyone can applaud and express their appreciation, Mr Lee said Singapore is here today because of this generation. “They sacrificed, they slogged, they worked and built today’s Singapore...So we remember the pioneer generation, we thank them, we honour them, we salute them.”

He added: “This SG50, we rejoice, we celebrate and we also remember Mr Lee Kuan Yew... and we look forward and we make the same determination to build Singapore, to make it better and take Singapore into SG100.”
