Health Minister Gan Kim Yong said yesterday that the best way to keep healthcare affordable, is for Singaporeans to stay healthy. :kma:

He pointed out that Singapore is continuing to see a rapidly aging population and fewer marriages and children, so health care costs will continue to increase with less support from families.

In the future, we may see more and more elderly singles with no family to support them, this will continue to put a burden on public healthcare systems and will cost the government more money in healthcare in the future.

Mr Gan suggested that this could be an issue but he also clarified that "ageing is not a problem, it's health that is a problem". :oIo:He was speaking during a MediShield Life public forum organised by REACH yesterday.

Talking about how to stay healthy, Mr Gan said that he thinks the best way to keep elderly Singaporeans healthy is to keep them working. This is something he learned from Japan.

This way, he explained, the elderly can "age actively" by staying employed and remaining in the community. They will also still be able to pay for their own healthcare needs. :*:

One of the participants at the dialogue had suggested that the government implement a 'no claim bonus' for people who stayed healthy, but Minister Gan rejected the idea saying that they didn't want to encourage people to avoid seeking healthcare just for the sake of the bonus.

He advised the public to stay healthy by exercising regularly and eating healthy.
