SINGAPORE should be as much Australia’s “family” as New Zealand, Prime Minister Tony Abbott will tell a major business breakfast in the Asian city-state today.

He will also meet with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President Tony Tan for bilateral meetings and to sign off on the Singapore-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

That agreement will focus on the economy, defence and security, while Mr Abbott’s trip has mostly focused on trade and investment.

“Australia, like Singapore, is a trading nation,” he will tell about 400 business leaders at an Australian Chamber of Commerce breakfast.

“Australia is proud to have such a close relationship with our northern neighbour.

“My hope is that Australians will see our relationship with Singapore as we see our relationship with New Zealand. New Zealand is family to Australia — and Singapore should be as well.”

Prime Minister Tony Abbott takes his morning bike ride on the streets of Singapore with the Australian and New Zealand Association, Singapore, cycling group.

Australia was the first country to establish diplomatic relations with Singapore, and has been a “beneficiary” of its economic rise, he will say.

“This is a two-way street. I want your investment in Australia,” he will say, according to an advance released last night.

Mr Abbott and Trade Minister Andrew Robb have been focusing specifically on Northern Australia during this visit, spruiking the region’s allure to investors and their own Northern Australia White Paper.

During a roundtable with a smaller group of business leaders yesterday — as well as Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles and Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett — Mr Abbott declared the north the “next frontier”.

“(There are) vast quantities of land, of water, of resources which should be better developed than they are right now,” he said.

“Obviously it’s imp that we respect our pristine environment but nevertheless we do need to make so much more of Northern Australia.(It) was once isolated, remote, difficult but because of the rise of Asia, North Australia is very, very well situated because of changing technology.

“So much can happen in Northern Australia that would once have been difficult so this is ... the next frontier for our country and our region.”

Mr Abbott will tell AusCham the Government is cutting red tape for investors to look at infrastructure, agriculture, tourism and education.

“Our reform agenda for the north includes: creating a single point of entry for all regulatory approvals for major investors; delivering a range of land and water reforms; establishing more flexible working holiday visa arrangements; and supporting migration agreements in designated areas,” he will say.

Mr Robb said it was a “very exciting” trip because of the opportunities emerging from major investors from Singapore.

Mr Abbott will leave Singapore tonight after delivering the prestigious Singapore Lecture on “Our Common Challenges: Strengthening Security in the Region”.

Earlier yesterday during an opening of the James Cook University campus, Mr Abbott

joked about a hypothetical, but pervasive problem, of dealing with slack workers.

“Sounds like Members of Parliament,” he told students.

As Mr Abbott toured the Singaporean “mega campus” the group had told him they were learning about leadership.

“Can we join the class? We might learn something,” he quipped.

On the other side of the room Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told a group of female students “women can do anything”.

The Singapore outpost of the Queensland university will teach about 4000 students.

Last night Mr Abbott attended the “50 BBQs” event with Prime Minister Lee Hsieng Loong.
