With all due respect, the language of English as we know it, takes words from all sorts of languages, latin, greek, and so on. In a way, English is actually 'made up'. And the reason why the Oxford dictionary keeps adding new words every year is because this language is not perfect yet, and cannot fully describe every single sentiment and emotion. Give me a good and simple word to replace the emotion and expression that comes with "lah". And if so, why do we need to express ourselves in such a manner? Is it our culture, tradition or just the effects of speaking more than one language. We have simply put the best of both languages together to create our 'unique' blend of English, as it serves the purpose of communication.

Even the scots and the brits have their own slang for some terms. So whose fault is it? This is simply the evolution of language.. And you have to be thankful that evolution of language did take place, or else we'd still be drawing animals in caves.

No language is "perfect". ALL are constantly evolving.

Language if for the purpose of communication. If a country with a population of 60 million wants to come up with their own version of English, it might make sense.

However, for a country of less than 4 million which has no language of its own wants to invent some bastardised form of English which sound absolutely ridiculous to the rest of world, the country must be NUTS!

Its just a language of convenience while communicating between our 4 million folks. Naturally when communicating with the rest of the world, we/ i would revert back to proper english for the simple reason of better communication. But as i said, our english is unique due to our multi-racial society, we tend to pepper our conversations with our "mother tongue" languages when we cannot find the proper english word to describe the situation/feelings/thoughts effectively and as accurately as we could have done by using some words from the variety of languages we may speak.

However as i have mentioned, you wouldn't find me speaking to a foreigner in singlish simply because he would not understand. And yes, although this forum is accessible to the world but who are you kidding when you ask where the majority of the forumites come from?
