Time: Close to midnight on Monday
Location: Lau Pa Sat

We have finally overcome the crisis for the day events. Everything is more or less in place and we can now heave a sigh of relief. So for now, me and Angel are going for a well-deserved break and a good meal.

At such hours, there are not many choices left for supper, so we make our way to Lau Pa Sat to grab some food.

We order some local dishes like carrot cake and satay for sharing.

Angel: "Uncle, it's a surprise that you eat at such places too."

Me: "Haha Angel, I am a normal person like you. Why won't I eat at such places?"

Angel: "Errh well, Rex usually doesn't like hawker food and not even food court as he always complains it's noisy and messy. So usually we will eat at restaurants."

Me: "Ya. Rex is born with a silver spoon in his mouth, maybe we pampered him too much. He is a smart boy and he always gets his way, as his mother dotes on him too much, a bit too much. I have always been quite worried about him as he seems to be very flippant about relationships and he has never met with any setbacks in his life. His brother Ryan is more down-to-earth and more mature. But I am very happy to see Rex together with you, because I think you are a sensible and more mature girl, should be able to help Rex settles down."

My heart is actually in a dilemma while I am saying this. The father in me is fighting against the man in me.

Angel blushes and says: "Uncle, you think too highly of me. I am just a normal girl. I just hope I won't disappoint you in my work."

I am not sure if it's the heat from the nearby satay stalls or it's her blush, Angel's cheeks is glowing in pink and just seems so palatable. Wake up! I need to take control of my emotions. This is my son's girlfriend, for goodness sake.

We continue with our food and make small talk along the way and I realize that Angel is much more mature in her thinking than you would think for a girl of her age. While the conversation carries on, Angel is starting to open up more and more to me....

Me: "Oh so you like classical music and theatre works?"

Angel: "Yes yes! I like theatre productions a lot. I have acted in a few theatre performances before and I have even directed a couple of shows before."

I am beginning to see a different side of Angel, I don't know how to describe it. When we are talking about acting and theatre works, her eyes lit up and her voice starts to take on a more chirpy pitch and she just rattles on and on about her experiences in acting and performances. So there is actually a kid side to Angel. You can sense her love and energy in acting.

Me: "Does Rex like it as well?"

Suddenly Angel looks a tad disappointed.

Angel: "He finds it too boring. He fell asleep at the first couple of performances he come to support and he stops after that. But it's ok, everyone has their own interest. Just like I don't really enjoy the extreme sports that he plays."

This girl is such a nice lady, always so understanding and accommodating. I hope Rex can treasure her.

Me: "I used to be active in theatre works when I was younger, you know. But ever since I started to run my business, I have less and less time to pursue my interests. Now hearing you recounting your experiences, I suddenly have an itch to act again haha."

Angel: "Really? That's such a coincidence! Uncle, actually we are in a headache because we are unable to find someone suitable for one of our main characters in our upcoming performance. You fit the profile perfectly! Would you be interested to help us?"

This is the first time I see Angel so happy. It's like a little kid finding a sweet. Her eyes are glowing with anticipation. Seeing her like that, would anyone think I have the heart to reject?

Me: "Of course, Angel. But I must put a disclaimer first. Do not blame me if I can't act well. It's been years, you know."

Angel: "Thank you Uncle! Let me call my director now. He will be so happy!"

Angel is on the phone and explaining to the other party that she has found a perfect candidate for the role that they are unable to fill. They can proceed with the original script. It seems like they are almost going to abandon that script which they love so much due to the inability to find the actor.

Me: "By the way, what role will I be playing? Why would a 50-yr old man have such an important role in the script that it's almost abandoned?"

Angel: "Oh, this script is about <Love in the City>. There are 3 different couples who face different forms of challenges in their relationships. Basically all three couples face huge resistance to them being together, and how they ignore the societal norms to come together. The first couple is a gay couple, that highlights the internal struggles of two man. The second couple is a middle-aged divorcee with two young kids falling in love with a rich, young man, and how they overcome the family resistance of the rich guy to be together. The last couple is a young lady falling in love with a man who is old enough to be her father."

Suddenly I can sense a change in Angel's tone.

Me: "So I assume I am the old man in the third couple? Will you be acting as well?"

Angel: "Yes, you are the lead in the third couple. I will be acting as well."

Me: "That's good. So what role will you be playing?"

Angel: "The other lead character in the third couple."
