Ex-Mediacorp actor James Lye has been appointed the global head of international banking at Standard Chartered.

In a statement on Thursday (20 October), the bank said that in the newly created role, Lye "will lead the Group International Banking team and drive focused execution to turbocharge the bank's International Banking business". The bank currently offers international banking in four of the top cross-border hubs: Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, and Jersey.

Lye, 53, was previously with Citibank for 20 years, where his last role was head of markets for Citibank International Personal Bank Singapore, a business unit specialising in offshore investment and wealth management products and services to high-net-worth individuals residing outside of Singapore. He was responsible for some 300 bankers.

Leading roles in Mediacorp dramas
Although he left the entertainment industry in 1998, Lye is still most well-known in Singapore for his leading roles in local dramas VR Man and Triple Nine. His role in the latter, as Inspector Mike Chin, won him the 1997 Star Award for most popular newcomer.

Based in Singapore, Lye will start his tenure with Standard Chartered on 1 November, and will be reporting to Raymond Ang, the global head of affluent clients, and Samir Subberwal, the head of the consumer, private and business banking, Asia, and the global head of digital business.

Subberwal said in the statement, "Increased cross-border wealth management needs arising from increasing international mobility is a trend that is here to stay. We have doubled our International Banking team in the last three years and will continue to support our clients by hiring the best talents and enhancing our International Banking proposition through investments in digitalisation."
