Cameroon reduce Eto'o ban
January 7, 2012

Samuel Eto'o is 2 miss jz 4 competitive games 4 Cameroon aft seeing his ban reduced to 8 months.

Anzhi Makhachkala striker Eto'o had been given a 15-match ban aft he & vice-captain Eyong Enoh were found guilty of encouraging team-mates not 2 travel 2 Algeria 4 a friendly in November.

However, Cameroon President Paul Biya asked his country's Football Federation 2 reduce the ban &, aft a meeting, the decision was taken on Saturday morning.

A statement on Fecafoot's website confirmed tat the sanction has been cut & suggested the committee had taken in2 account Eto'o's enormous popularity in the country given his long career in the national team, saying tat although he was required 2 be a model of "patriotism, loyalty & commitment" as captain he "is a world famous athlete who has rendered outstanding services 2 the national team of Cameroon".

Enoh has also seen his reduced & he will now only be suspended for 1 competitive game, while Benoit Assou-Ekotto - who had been fined 1 million CFA francs - has seen his punishment rescinded.

Cameroon failed 2 qualify the 2012 African Nations Cup but begin qualification 4 the 2013 tournament against Guinea-Bissau on February 29 & then play Congo DR on June 1 & Libya on June 8 in World Cup 2014 qualifiers b4 playing the return leg against Guinea-Bissau on June 15.

Co-hosts net first win

African Nations Cup co-hosts Equatorial Guinea secured themselves a reported $1 million bonus as Javier Balboa earned them victory in the tournament's opening game.

The midfielder grabbed the only goal in the 87th minute as the National Lightning secured the reward offered by the son of long-standing president Teodoro Obiang Nguema.

It was no less tan they deserved aft having the better of the game, particularly in a lively 1st half.

Libya's Walid El Khatroushi & Jamal Mohamed were both just unable 2 carve out early chances while the co-hosts' 1st attack centred around great work by Iban Iyanga Randy, but Ivan Bolado was kept @ bay by Younes Shibani.

Balboa's weak long-range shot then almost squirmed away fr keeper Samir Abod - who had a huge let-off moments later.

Juvenal Edjogo's shot was deflected on2 the post & Bolado's follow-up was fumbled thru his legs & over the line by Abod, whose blushes were spared by an offside flag against Thierry Fidjeu.

Abod then had 2 snatch the ball aft Ali Salama deflected Iyanga's cross 2wards his own goal & Juvenal sliced wide aft Shibani cut out Balboa's cross.

Walid gave Equatorial Guinea keeper Danilo his 1st test early in the 2nd half b4 Fidjeu was off target with an acrobatic effort @ the other end.

Libya substitute Ihab Al Busaifi warmed Danilo's palms with a fierce drive but there was otherwise little in the way of goalmouth action - @ least until Abod dived 2 turn away Mohammad Doe's ferocious free-kick in the 72nd minute.

Equatorial Guinea's regular captain, Deportivo La Coruna striker Rodolfo Bodipo, had been restricted 2 a substitute's role by injury &, 10 mins aft replacing Fidjeu, damaged his Achilles tendon & gave way 2 Daniel Ekedo.

But the co-hosts snatched victory with 3 mins remaining when Balboa just beat the offside trap 2 race onto Ekedo's pass & lift the ball over Abod.

Libya responded & Mohamed forced a diving save fr Danilo, but Amia Ekanga then lashed a superb effort against Abod's crossbar.

Abdala Al Sherif was booked in stoppage time 4 diving in Equatorial Guinea's penalty area in a desperate attempt 2 win a spot-kick, & an equaliser could not be found.
