Sometime in Nov 2001, my SG friend (1st timer in SH and I was a new-bird as well) was walking along Nanjing Pedestrian Mall whilst I was taking a rest in a restaurant when he called me to tell me that a girl approached him asking for directions and later became friendly. Now that confirmed my suspicions. She had told my friend when they met at the Mall that she was alone in this big city and now she suddenly had a friend? Naturally, I didn't agree and the girl became insistent (and perhaps a mite too agressive) so I told my friend to tell her to fcuk off.

The point is: if you think you wish to pick up someone off the street, then do so but be the hunter, not the hunted. Survey girls are a good target - they're usually university girls trying to make an extra buck or two. How far you can go with them depends on you and your luck.

I've been approached by pimps too - their trained eyes can spot a foreigner miles away. I always tell them my wife is waiting for me and point to a shop several hundred metres away.

I don't like to be hunted - makes me feel like prey.

Several choices you got in Pudong,

Night Club at 4th Floor at Wei Tai Hotel: Very reasonalbe prices and 100+ girls, but this place is busy so go before 8pm

Night club at ?th floor at You You Hotel, some cute girls but most are average, it has a sitting area outside so you can go on your own

Two clubs on 42nd fl at Tsu Jing San Hotel, the Japanese style club has a sitting area outside but the other club has nicer gals

Two japanese style club located at Suncome Liaw's Plaza (office building), the Red what ever bar has nicer girls.

Overall, tips are 200 per gal in PUdong.

However, Puxi has a lot nicer places.

Night Club at Pu Dong Hotel.... you can negotiate for the room charge (like 150-200 per person or so)

Two japanese style club located at Suncome Liaw's Plaza (office building), the Red what ever bar has nicer girls. 250 per person for two beers. The other one is 200 for all you can drink beer and 300 for all you can drink wisky (and you can negotiate too)

Overall, tips are always 200 per gal in Pudong.

Both Wei Tai and Tsu Jiing San have a nice sauna. 800 all inclusive (ML included).



However, Puxi has a lot nicer places.

These questions were not directed to me but I'd offer my 2 cents' worth. Yes, the tip is for sitting only but at the Jap joint in Purple Mountain I've seen wandering hands. At every joint you go to, there may be some girls who'd ask subtly or directly for more tips - give at your sole discretion altho most of us here don't believe in spoiling the market.

I haven't been to all the places bro69er recommended to you but it's safe to assume he isn't directing you to hei dians.

Always ask for a fa piao (official receipt) if you suspect you're being overcharged - you'd be surprised at how quickly they realise there had been some mathematical mistake.

One pre-emptive approach I took when I was really new here involves casual name-dropping - "oh, I'm so tired - recently been meeting up with this police chief, that supreme court judge, etc" (was true in my case but how would they know?). You don't have to brag about it of coz. At least if they're thinking of taking you for a ride, they'd back off.

Even cab-drivers will take you for a ride - happens everywhere in the world. Ask for the fa piao. Some cabs have tampered meters - I sat in one last night. The meter read RMB21 for what I know to be an RMB15 trip. I asked for the fa piao and told him very firmly that the fare couldn't be correct. The cabby immediately apologised and claimed that his meter wasn't working properly and asked me to pay RMB15 only. If you want to avoid such hassles, always flag down only cabs from large reputable cab companies, like Dazhong.

It's a learning process - along the way you'd have to expect to pay some school fees. That's my personal philosophy - just avoid being too timid altho you shouldn't risk life or limb merely to save a few dollars.

I'm been living in Guangzhou for 1 year now and no cab drivers can be more sly than the ones here. Lawless, Rude and absolute dangerous: all these attributes in reference to their driving. As for tampering or metering the cabs, I simply just bargain before entering the cab. Heres the law: you bargain for at least 1/2 of the drivers' asking price and you should be safe. This means, from Point A to B, if they ask for RMB$50, then you bargain for RMB$25 or less.

As for claiming to be some big shot's friend or whatever; I've personally never tried and wouldn't bother.

If you want to go to a specific place I recommeded and don't feel very comfortable adventuring out, send me an inmail. I can recommend a mama/papa san to you.

And yes, 200 rmb tip just for sitting. Not all the girls are take out. 800 for overnight. For takeout, you have to ask mama san first and don't pay the 200 tip. Don't pay anyone more than 200 tip unless you like her toooo much.

One more thing, in Pudong clubs, don't expect the degree of luxury they offer in PuXi. On the other hand, the prices are lot cheaper anyway. Girls are more simple, don't dress/talk as well but they are as pretty as Puxi girls.
