wow you're lucky .. my gal and her whole family stays in kengtong (u noe how hard and irritating it is to call to kengtong)

yangoon got mobile line right ? my gal's going there to study soon and she mentioned it'll be harder for me to contact her as she's all alone there and not sure of which number she'll be having, and said she has no mobile(cuz she's in kengtong which is internal dailing) and she will only call her mom once a month due to $ constraints.

once again, i'm abit doubtful of her words, given her the benefit of doubt though. any bros here can verify ?

Re: Mae Sai, Thailand

Relating to Myanmar Passport.. I know of a girl who just recently applied for one. Total cost was about 60,000B, this was inclusive of accomodation in Yagoon, air ticket to Yagoon, paid for a guide and of course the passport. The whole process took about 2 weeks and she actually had a guide from the thai myanmar embassy.

My wife is from Kengtung, so this is from her...

If your girl was a WL b4, then it is highly unlikely this is true. The reason is simple:
1) If she is going to school in Yangon, it is assumed she is going to the University, which means she must have study as least until high school in keng tung. If so not many of these girls actually become WL
2) If she has education already.. and is a WL, then this job is 20 times better paying than any job she can hope to find even with 1st class honors in Myanmar. Further, Shan people is unlikely to get good post in govt or business jobs...

Sanity Check:
- Can she speak and write english? If she cannot, she have not been to school.. school in Myanmar had english as core subject (ex british colony like us)
- Can she speak and write Burmese? if cannot, again never been to school.
- Ask her which school is she going, at least she must know the name...

Sound like she is trying to hint you not to call and most of all not to go find her... by spinning this story.

I will be traveling from Ruili/Mengla (Chinese border) to Tachileik/Mae Sai in July. Latest reports say you (meaning anyone - International) with a 100US deal with travel agents in Kumning. You get a 2 week Visa. The word is you can not do it the toher way round.. Burma to china. As mentioned, I hope to take the route in JUly. i have been to Ruili before and found it disappointing! Few Burmese girls!

Bro,

Do you know where your gal stays in KengTung? KengTung is not small and it will be required for you to know her village name. I have known of some Myanmar girls who doesn't tell their tiraks where exactly is their village. This is because the relationship has not been confirmed yet and that's why they doesn't want to say it out. You might want to check with your girl first.

I can confirm the above-mentioned 3 points listed by Bobosasa. The education system is Myanmar is in such a way that English and Myanmese language is a must.

Bobosasa, I have up your reps for your information.

HI MD.
yea i understand this pt too. anyway,my girl's spoken english is very good (hehe when 1st time know her okok only, "trained" over time) written.. not very sure.. as for myanmese, she knows how to speak and write. her thai language are both not bad written and spoken, often read books (thai story books, thai cleo etc)

i dont know exactly, while she was in SG.. she told me b4 but i forgotten, very long ago. and she mentioned its very messy i sure lost if i go.
den again, might be true she doesnt let me know where her village is cuz we're merely together for 1 yr. she prolly EITHER doesnt want me to know at all, or wants to comfirm the r/s

leaving my options open

Hi subaculture,
Seems that u had stay in Ruili before but are quite disappointed there. Can tell us more about the place. I had started a thread titled " Borders town in Southeast Asia and China" which will be taking about the borders towns. Ruili is one of them. You are welcome to comment and share your experience there. Thanks.

Hi bro Trick,

Are u referring to the Thai side or the Tachileik side ? In the Tachileik side, if you want really near to the border, there is a hotel called Golden Triangle Hotel. It is located on top of a small hill just at the round-about. From the web, it seem that a 3-star hotel, costing US$43. But I think you can get better rate there if you are there.

Another one i saw is called Maekhong River View Hotel a few kilometres (I think less than 2 kilometres) from the border. Actually quite near. If you take their taxi - like those Thailand's pickup taxi called songthew, it is just a few minutes away. It is just like typically 3-star hotel, with its own restaurant, massage centre. At that time, i just look around and they show me the place - the facilities. Very friendly staff. But i find the hotel a bit dark. In fact, I find that the Burmaese shop are always so dark, especially in the day. Dun know why.

For your info., opposite this hotel is a short lane, with many prostitute houses inside.
