How big will be Tet bonuses?

VietNamNet Bridge – It is expected that the Tet bonuses to be offered by foreign invested enterprises to their staff will be half as much or double that of the previous year. The finance and banking, telecom, oil and gas and other service sectors are also expecting relatively high bonuses.

Nguyen Tuan Quynh, Chair of SFC, a fuel company, said that the company had a prosperous year 2010, therefore, the Tet bonuses will be bigger than that of the previous year. All the employees will get the 13th month salary and two-month salaries for Tet.

The Tet bonus levels have decided based on the business result in 2010. The highest Tet bonus level would be 55 million dong. “This year’s Tet bonuses seem to be higher than in the previous year because SFC has a prosperous year n 2010,” Quynh explained.

He said that in previous years, the company only released information about Tet bonuses just before Tet. However, the company wants to declare the Tet bonuses soon to encourage its staff. Once anticipating the Tet bonuses, the employees can set up their Tet purchase plan.

Garment and footwear companies have promised to offer bigger Tet bonuses this year Every worker will get the bonus equal to one-month salary at least. This was confirmed by Pham Xuan Hong, Deputy Chair of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association, and General Director of Saigon 3 Company

Hong said every worker will get one-month salary at minimum and 2.5-month salary at maximum. However, he added that Tet bonus increases will not be high enough to cover the price increases.

Garment companies have experienced a prosperous year. Enterprises get a lot of orders in the post-global crisis period. many enterprises have enough work to do until the end of the second quarter of 2011. However, they say they do not hope to see their profit increase sharply in the next year, because the input material prices have been increasing sharply

Duc Thanh Wooden Furniture Corporation has not made official declarations about the Tet bonuses, but the company’s General Director Le Hai Lieu said his 1000 workers will get bigger Tet bonuses this year. Every worker will get the 13th month salary. Besides, they will also get other bonuses based on their contribution to the company.

General Director of Hung Vuong Joint Stock Company also said that Hung Vuong makes a large profit this year, estimated at 500 billion dong, because the company benefits from the exchange rate fluctuations. Therefore, the Tet bonuses will certainly “satisfy the staff”

Nevertheless, many other companies are not really satisfied with their business results in 2010. Phan Dinh Son, Director of Bao An Company said that the turnover growth rate is below the expectation. Therefore, the Tet bonuses for Bao An’s staff will not be higher than the previous year. According to Son, the highest Tet bonus level would be about 30 million dong.

To date, the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs has not received all the reports from local departments about the Tet bonuses.

Mai Xuan Tri, Deputy Director of the Khanh Hoa province’s Department of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, the Tet bonuses of the enterprises in the province will be lower than the previous Tet. The highest expected Tet bonus level is 71 million dong, while the lowest 30,000 dong.

Sperm in short supply in Vietnam metro

Doctors prepare sperms for an in vitro fertilization case at Hung Vuong Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City. Sperm shortage at the city hospitals have made infertile couples more desperate.
Infertility is a growing problem among young couples in Ho Chi Minh City, doctors say. What’s worse, the city is short on sperm.

Some desperate couples have even turned to anonymous online sources that offer to help them conceive, in the biblical sense.

Doctor Hoang Thi Diem Tuyet, head of the Infertility Faculty at Tu Du, the city’s leading Obstetrics and Gynecology hospital, says 32,020 couples sought help for conception during the first nine months of this year—up 6.5 percent year-on-year.

Every day, around 150 people seek consultation and examination for infertility at the hospital, Dr. Tuyet said. Around 10 percent of those couples require in vitro fertilization (IVF)—a process in which the female egg is fertilized from outside the body.

“Since the faculty was established [in 1997], nearly 4,000 children have been conceived through IVF,” she said.

In the statistics release by Tu Du Hospital, 39 percent of the infertility cases are attributed to husbands, 27 percent to wives and 21 percent to problems with both parties. The cause of 13 percent of said cases has not been determined.

Rising demand

“The demand for infertility treatment has been increasing,” said doctor Nguyen Thi Ngoc Suong, head of the Infertility Faculty at Hung Vuong Hospital.

Every day, the Hung Vuong faculty sees between 80-90 couples. Doctors here prescribe in vitro fertilization to between 20 and 30 couples each month, according to Dr. Suong.

Most of the patients at the clinic range between 31-35 years of age and come from all walks of life. Some couples are in their early twenties.

In many cases, infertile couples put off conception for work or financial reasons for many years after marriage. They may use a variety of different birth control measures during that period, said Ho Manh Tuong, general secretary of the HCMC Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Association.

“The pressure of life, of work combined with dietary and environmental conditions cause conception problems,” Tuong said.

Falling supply

Despite a growing demand, hospitals are chronically short of good sperm.

Tu Do Hospital only releases sperm from its bank after a healthy deposit is made.

Dr. Tuyet said that once a physician at Tu Do advises a couple to go in for an IVF, the husband and wife then have to track down a sperm donor. It’s not been official how much the donors would get.

Many couples can’t get over the embarrassment of asking anyone for help. In some cases, Tuyet said, their own families prevent them from using scientific intervention to effect conception.

Even when infertile couples find a donor, the deposit they submit is tested for several months to ensure it is viable and disease-free. Sometimes, if the sperm donation fails to meet hospital standards, it cannot be exchanged for a healthy sample.

Moreover, “it’s not easy to find someone willing to donate sperm,” said Dr. Suong from Hung Vuong Hospital.

Desperate times

Doctor Tuong said some couples waited so long for sperm donations that they gave up. Some were prescribed IVF at age 30 but had failed to track down a viable sperm donor by age 40, he said.

The doctor said some desperate couples appear enticed by illegal online sperm supplies or private clinics.

Health inspectors in HCMC recently found a doctor at a clinic in District 1 selling sperm for VND10- 15 million (US$513-770) per dose. The doctor further offered to inject the healthy sperm into the wife’s reproductive system for VND5 million.

Many men have been selling sperm online for between VND4-16 million ($205-820) - some even offer to deliver their sperm directly into the womb.

Doctors say these practices can result in infectious diseases and do not guarantee success because the sperm has not been tested.

Dr. Tuong, of the city infertility association, asserted that the government should actively encourage people to donate sperms; they are donating other organs, he pointed out.

Yet Tuong did express concern that too much sperm donation might cause blood relation problems, later.

Super-scooter selling like hot cakes despite price storms

“The clients that we target are high income earners. These can be the clients who have cars already, but still want to own motorbikes,” said Costantino Sambuy, General Director of Piaggio Vietnam. It is clear that it would be much easier to drive on motorbikes in the inner city with heavy traffic.

143 million dong, equal to $7000, is a fortune for low and medium income earners. However, this is a mediocre sum of money for high income earners. Especially, analysts say $7000 is not too high if compared with other scooter models, like Honda Spacy 125 or Dyland SH, which are much more expensive.

Prior to that, in June 2009, Piaggio Vietnam launched Vespa LX125 at 60 million dong, a relatively high price level in comparison with the average prices on the market. However, the model still sold very well. In 2009, Piaggio Vietnam sold 22,300 products, about 3500-4000 products a month.

In 2010, the motorbike manufacturer plans to churn out 50,000 scooters from its factory in Vietnam and sell 72,000 products, including both products assembled in Vietnam and imported cars in order to diversify the products. Costantino Sambuy told Dau tu newspaper two weeks before the end of 2010 that the manufacturer fulfills all the business targets set earlier this year.

Alongside Piaggio Vietnam other motorbike manufacturers are also trying to introduce luxury models to attract wealthy customers. Honda Vietnam, for example, introduced Honda SH 125 and Honda SH 150 with the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of nearly 100 million dong and 121 million dong, respectively.

The market of super-scooters for high income earners has witnessed the emergence of a giant from Italia - Ducati. After opening the first showroom in HCM City, Dong Duong Company, the official distributor of Ducati decided to march towards the north, introducing models at prices $15,000 and $70,000 in Hanoi.

The managers of Dong Duong also said that they do not target popular clients, but target high income earners who purchase luxury scooters for their collection or just for fun

The returning of the luxury products to Vietnamese market was marked by the opening of the Kawasaki showroom run by Phuong Mai Company in HCM City and Hanoi.

Right after that, the Vulcan 900 Custom, with a sale price of $17,000 receive a large number of orders, along with Boss 174cc and KSR 112 cc.

Besides, the motorbikes with the cylinder capacity of 400-18,000 cc with the sale prices of $20,000-52,000, imported under the mode of complete built units, have also been available at Ravo Motor Showroom in Hanoi.
