I try to turn my attention back to Yasmine, a simple looking girl with nerdy glasses who is feeling out of place in Yaddie's mass gathering birthday party of 30++ pax.

Pearly: " Are you secretly in love with her?" She continue to interrupt without realizing.

I turned my attention back to yasmine feeling slightly irritated. I was enjoying a rather pleasant conversation with Yamine before she interrupted. But mostly, I didn't like Pearly even before I met her. I know I am being stereotypical but beautiful singapore girls are mostly without depth and personality and extremely self centered. So far she seems to be proving the 3rd feature right.

Pearly: Really? You two look good together. We always tell Yaddie's that.

Me: "We are not compatible as lovers" I replied uninterested

I lowered my head to Yasmine sitting beside me and whisper into her ears that I am sorry for the interruption, also taking in the scent on her hair at the same time.

Yasmine giggled and gave me a nod of her head with a look of amusement saying she understand. She also sneak a look of acknowledgement that she knows what I am thinking since 20mins before, we are sharing our observation about the people in the party and Pearly came very negatively from our observation. Pearly now notice I am more then cordial with the simple nerdy looking Yasmine.

She lowered her head and whispered in my ear this time

Yasmine stood up and point to me she would be over at the other side of the party. I am pretty sure she couldn't hear what Pearly just whispered in my ear. I manage to stop her before she walked away.

Me: Whats your number, Yas? I spoke in normal volume so Pearly heard me. "The party is going to get rowdy near 12am" I explained.

Yasmine look at me with observational eyes with a slight discomfort in her body language. Pearly being in the picture made my earlier newly establish chemistry with Yasmine awkward. She wasn't sure where I am coming from asking for her number so abruptly.

I gave Yasmine a cheeky look and raise my glass of Hennessy

"Ships sail in mysterious way that we cannot comprehend. For possibilities!" Yasmine broke into a smile. She understood i meant it could be friendSHIP or relationSHIP. She drank half the drink from my glass and pass it back to me to finish it and dial a number on my phone. She then swiftly zoom across the room and settle into a comfortable background she found.

I turn my head back to Pearly sitting beside me and studied her point blank. There was no trace of friendliness on me. I shaken her confidence and succeeded in making her feel awkward.

Pearly: "I am so sorry. I didn't know I was disturbing"

Me: "What do you want?" I asked point blank again without any gentleness in my tone in which she must be used to having from man smitten by her good looks.

Pearly: " Oh I just thought I wanted to get to know you better since I heard about you from Yaddie for the longest time but you were seldom in any of our gathering"

Me: "That is only part of the reason. You are also using me as an excuse to get yourself out of that little pretendious circle formed around you" I shot right at Pearly's face.

If Yaddie talked about me to her gal's gang. She didn't prepare them enough how direct and unsociable I can be.

Pearly frowned. "Why did you say that?"

Me: " No Why. I say that because that is what I observed"

Me:" Listen, I am a businessman and I spend alot of my time in unpleasant and pretendious business setting with business associates, clients or employees. After work, I like things to be as unpretendious as possible. I would practice more tact if you want. But I like to know people without the facade we all have to put on. Bonds form this way are the most real and you also avoid further cluttering your phone book with acquaintance you don't intend to keep"

Pearly : "Ah which is why you have such a great friendship with Yaddie?"

Me: "Exactly. To answer your question. No Yasmine isn't my type. But there is a small possibilities she could be depending on how our chemistry develop."

Pearly : "Then what is your type?"

Me: "The most brutal truth any male can tell you will be any beautiful woman who attract them sexually. Another answer will be none.

Pearly totally didn't get what I meant and this wasn't even deep. I thought about my reply and consider if I should really go to the extreme end of what is already deem socially unacceptable.

And that was my first encounter with Pearly. That episode became a hot topic among Yaddie's girl gang. And I continued to be just outside of Yaddie's circle of friends.

Yasmine and me however became movie and gaming pals where we sometimes goes for a midnight spin and even a graveyard adventure where we discuss our views about religion and the spiritual world. We kissed and had abit of misadventure car romance where we discovered we are sexually not compatible. We remain friends till today.

Pearly and me on the other hand cross sword for the second time a year later.

I felt a tap on my shoulder but didn't bothered to turn around as I continue slipping my drink. I simply assume it was Yaddie and motion her that her seat is across my table.

"So you really are that unapproachable" I heard an unfamiliar voice but a familiar face then sat infront of me.

"Ah you are that girl. Why are you here?" She caught me by surprised.

"Pearly" She reminded me her name. Not at all pleased.

"Ah yeah, Yaddie asked you to come?"
It isn't like Yaddie to invite someone without informing me as she know very well I am very picky with the company I keep.

Pearly: "No, I asked her out but she told me she is meeting you today" I thought I joined in if you don't mind as I have 3 hours to kill before meeting my Client"

I thought about that statement for a while and knew something is missing. Yaddie knows me well. She knows I will not like this and it is 5pm at the moment.

"You are meeting your client at 8pm?" I asked.

Pearly: "Yup, just to deliver his order to him" She studied me before asking again. "How did you and that girl go?"
I didn't reply and went back to slipping my drink. Pearly ordered a drink for herself as if I had given her permission to the table. I didn't bothered to say anything and studied Pearly. I gave a good thought about what I heard from Yaddie about her and concluded that no only is she used to being the center of attention in front of males, it actually bothers her when she isn't. Girls, even among good gal friends are fiercely competitive underneath and this one spend far too much effort on her appearance to make sure every details from her head to toe is in perfect order. Not a trace of imperfection.

It is only after I begin writing, then i understand the amount of time and thoughts required. Preparing yourself and your environment to write is a tedious process for me since I need to dive into memory lanes and to get myself into writing mood.

Its been disappointing after re reading what I wrote so far as well.
The story just doesn't flow nicely and the characters are not introduced and protrayed as strongly as they truely are.

Chili Padi and ping ping are 2 of the most colourful characters I met in Geylang and my command of english just isn;t good enough to tell the full story

The linkage to each parts may not be there but I'm sure most of us can relate and understand what you trying say.
Itz like how some directors would film their movies; flashbacks inserted at the intervals of the movies and slowly piecing up the story.

I heard government after 20 years of foot dragging has finally decided to move vices out of Geylang for good.

Places thrown up were Kranji, Kovan, Woodlands, Chua Chu Kang.

This is because Geylang is too near future Kallang Sports Hub and Paya Lebar Business Hub and too near Suntec, Marina Bay and Shenton Way.

It will give a bad image of sports, business mixing alongside with vices.

What do the Brothers here think ? Geylang now has construction everywhere and mostly residential freehold condominiums.

Geylang to transform or not ? Tanjong Pagar and Keong Saik Street manage to transform already.
