I didnt know IOU is consider legal document. I have a few IOU but i bring to police station and log a report, they say it can only be treated as domestic affairs and was told the law cannot do anything. and the prb is between u and the party. ask em go look for social welfare for help.

may be is time for me to dig out those IOUs. hope is still readable.

Pardon my very limited knowledge about the Law as I'm not in it as a profession in anyway.
There are many legal issues that the police will not act on.
Thus, many issues, if one tends to make a case outta it, it's up to them to seek legal council and make a case outta it for the courts to decide on the outcome.
Thus, anything not linked to criminal issues, will not be followed up by the police.

Her loan to u was a favour to u as her then-bf. now that u're no longer bf to her, if i were u i would return it even if it means borrowing from someone else to pay her. I ve seen cases where when ppl breakup they even return gifts (especially expensive ones). Though i dun necessarily agree, i m just illustrating the idea of a clean break and try as we might, we can't escape the materialism of this world.

$1.7k salary is quite hard to get credit card and credit line, i know. But don't u have other frens? how abt ur parents? $5k is not little but not really a lot either. since u're good for ur debt, should not be difficult to get help from 2 or even 3 persons (each one lend u a bit).

when i ended a r/s with my ex, she still let me use her credit card and pay for my bill. how sweet she is.

you are right, even after breakup or people buying expensive gifts to compensate breakup. it is an expression to tell the other party that you treasure the r/s, you once have with you but not able to be together forever due to watever reasons.

giving expensive gifts is also a form of releasing the emotion of parting. buying expensive gifts detach away the emotion you have for your ex. it does make you feel better.

actually when i broked off with her, i gave her back every single thing that she gave me. I couldn't take the insults that she hurled at me, said i forced her to buy this and that.. all the branded things. so i just gave her back everything.

Your ex is very sweet and mature. at least she knows where to draw the line and not mix "work" with emotions.

No need to get legal, if you can settle with $$ then using $$ to solve it, just that next time if you don't want to marry the girl don't initiate the r/s then. If you just want to release with no string attached then sbf is the right place for you.
