is it? i thought the last time was they did it as a one off thing....but group stage didn't Liverpool after winning the CL the season before went in through the knock out stage first before qualifying for the group stage?

Bro Frankiestine, that's precisely the one off thing you are talking about, as that time, they didn't cater a spot for the defending champions and thus Liverpool had to start from the 1st qualifying stage.

However, after that season, if I'm not wrong, if the defending champions is not able to qualify for the Champions League by its league standing, the team holding the last slot will lose its slot. Example, if it occurs that another team is holding 4th and Liverpool wins its 6th European crown but finishes 5th or maybe below (touch wood!) the team finishing 4th will lose its Champions League slot to Liverpool

certainly agreed with you bro, i rather see them finish higher up the table, then just plainly playing for CL win, of course I love that, to win the 6th title. But I certainly hope the players can concentrate more on the league games, and win this coming weekend game against boro, and of course the games after that.

If he does that again this season, he will convince the fans and owners even more that he's not the man to bring the league title back to Liverpool. For fans, it will be frustrating to see us losing to sides like Wigan, Bolton and yet we can beat the Inters, Barces, Milans of the world.

Don't think he will. Rafa is smart enough to know he has to secure 4th (financial reasons, minimum expectations from fans and bosses). Once he does that, then he will field weaker sides in the league. It's not like we have a lot of other domestic distractions other than the league
