Benitez asks for patience as he defends Liverpool record

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has launched an impassioned defence of his time at Anfield and asked his critics for patience.

Benitez has come under fire after Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Manchester United meant his side slipped to 11th in the Premier League.

"When we lost to Burnley (in the FA Cup) two years ago it was the end of the world for some people and we went on to win the Champions League," the Spaniard told reporters on the eve of the League Cup third-round tie at home to Reading.

"Last season when we lost to Crystal Palace (in the League Cup) we then won the FA Cup and were in the final of the Intercontinental Cup."

Benitez said it was too early in the campaign to judge how Liverpool would fare.

"In October last year we were 24 points behind (eventual champions) Chelsea and finished with 82 points, a record for Liverpool," he said.

"It is only October now and it is important to be patient. We know we have to improve and we will work hard to improve."

Benitez does not view the League Cup as one of his top targets.

"My priority is to win every game but if you talk about the League Cup then you can say it's not my priority," he said.

"If you read the rules then you see you have to play your strongest team but how can you play your strongest team in all the competitions?

"We will try to use our senior players but I won't use (Steven) Gerrard or (Xabi) Alonso or players who have played a lot of games. It is too much for them to play well all season without a rest."

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez insists he will not be swayed and will continue to play Steven Gerrard on the right of midfield.

The Spanish manager came under-fire following the Reds' dismal showing in their 2-0 defeat at Manchester United on Sunday for playing his skipper on the right side of midfield.

That defeat left Liverpool 11 points adrift of their main title rivals, but despite claims the Gerrard is not happy with the role he is being asked to play, Benitez is adamant he will continue with the tactic.

"I am as happy as Steve McClaren with Steven Gerrard and where he is playing," said the Liverpool boss.

"Steve scored 23 goals last season, playing on the right side of midfield. He is not being played as a right winger.

He is always getting the ball and coming inside, that is what the role is and he had the best season of his career playing that way.

England can see that and that is where they are playing him too.

Yes, Stevie can play well in central midfield, he could play well anywhere.

I have talked to Stevie, and he is happy.

He is the captain and must be an example for the rest and he knows that the most important thing is the club, the team, the supporters and after that, the players."

Compared to Fergie & Wenger, RB is considered a newbie in EPL. Whereas compared to Mourinho, LFC don't have the wealth to buy quality players that cost ten of millions pounds in which CFC considered peanuts to them. Most important, i think is teamwork that causes Liverpool to be where they are at the moment. Each player may have fantastic individual skills but soccer is a sports that need teamwork & understanding to gel the team together. Also too much rotation is just bad for the team. Just my 2cts worth of opinion.

Both were doing fine initially but favoritism eventually take place and the whole team begin to be unpredictable with their form.

yeah... i don't pretty much get you... i don't know how a liverpool fan should be happy with just champs. league qualification... we should be challenging for top honours every year... not the odd charity shield every other year... and definitely not be boasting about 3rd place in the EPL...

if you still wanna side with rafa, do take note in all EPL matches with rafa in charge against chelsea, liverpool lost all of 5 past meetings... drew 1 against manure in 5 games and won 1, drew 1, lost 3 against arse... and don't even make me bring up bolton... sigh...

as much as i hope liverpool to win,this current crisis of sorts must be solved by rafa.1st the defence,whatever happen to the tight defence?and the problem of the strikers!my view is that if you do not let the strikers play games together to develop the understanding,it will never be a lethal combination to start pumping in goals.hope rafa make up his mind on his strikers.i do not have problems with squad rotation but too much of something will always do more harm than good.

actually my 'dream' manager for Pool will b some1 tougher in d mould of Martin ONeil, Guus Hiddink or Arsene Wenger. Rafa n GH seems too soft n nice.

well, David Moyes is doin not too badly @ Everton ... he's young n shaping Everton into quite a solid outfit. Not easy to beat. mayb in years to come dun b surprised if we see him joining Pool 1 day.
