I'd suggest you just making a booking at a likely hotel through a booking website that does not require front end deposit (just as a bit of insurance) and then when you get there, just walk along Patong beach and walk-in to hotels you find suitable/nice; this is still low season there and hotels are not only still low-priced, they are willing to negotiate.

Wouldn't suggest this for the high season though.
