Now we knew all the clothings made in Vietnam come from Can Tho and owned by Taiwanese...
_____________________________________________ 200 evacuated as huge blaze spreads in Taiwanese factory in southern Vietnam By Cuu Long March 23, 2017 | 11:26 pm GMT+7 When I went inside, everything was ruined,' the garment factory executive said. Just as the firefighters thought the inferno that had erupted at a Taiwanese garment factory in southern Vietnam on Thursday morning had been contained, it spread to an adjacent building. Over 100 people have been evacuated from a nearby apartment building to a nearby school, said ward chief Nguyen Hung Viet, adding that another 100 will soon join them. The fire started on the top floor of a five-story building where garment firm Kwong Lung - Meko stores fabric in the southern city of Can Tho, forcing hundreds of workers to flee. Around 9 p.m. today, the fire unexpectedly spread through a conveyor belt to an adjacent building which stores fur, threatening the safety of residents living nearby. No casualties have been reported. "The fire is very hard to contain because it started far up and the factory stores a lot of flammable materials," colonel Le Tan Buu, director of HCMC Firefighting Police Department told VnExpress. "As we coordinate many forces, I think the fire will soon be stopped." Hundreds of firefighters from nearby provinces, including Ho Chi Minh City, have been dispatched to help Can Tho battle the blaze. Upon seeing the fire spread all over his factory, a Taiwanese executive who gave his name as Lai, fainted and was taken away in an ambulance. "When I went inside, everything was ruined," Lai said earlier this afternoon. Kwong Lung - Meko specializes in feather processing and garment production. Its factory covers about 17,000 m2 and has more than 1,300 workers in the Tra Noc Industrial Zone, about 15km from downtown Can Tho.

Notorious German beggar is back in Saigon
By Quoc Anh March 23, 2017 | 08:55 pm GMT+7 Benjamin Holst shared Facebook photos of him enjoying beers and Saigon nightlife with money obtained through begging. Infamous beggar Benjamin Holst, who has been traveling the world and partying with money made from begging, appears to have returned to Ho Chi Minh City, if photos posted on Facebook are anything to go by. Images of Holst have been circulating on social media over the past week showing him begging for money on the city's streets. Holst has been dubbed a “professional beggar” for repeatedly using his leg, which is permanently swollen due to a condition called macrodystrophia lipomatosa, to gain sympathy from tourists and locals around the world. “I post these photos and I hope someone can help him return home and receive treatment,” said a user who shared photos of Holst on Hoang Sa Street in District 3. But treatment might not be Holst's goal, who since last week has been posting photos on his Facebook page sitting in restaurants around Saigon’s backpacker corner and drinking beer, along with waitresses in skimpy clothes. According to his Facebook page, he flew to Da Nang last Wednesday after spending time in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, saying it was “time for cheaper girls”, referring to Penang. Many people who hear his story about needing to buy a plane ticket home give him money, which usually ends up being spent in bars and on sex services. In September 2014, locals in Thailand gave him more than $1,400 to buy a plane ticket home, and Deutscher Hilfsverein Thailand, an organization that helps German citizens abroad, opened a crowdfunding site for him. He was deported and banned from returning to Thailand after being found spending the cash at a party in Pattaya shortly after, the Star Online reported. But the pandling did not stop as Holst was later seen doing the same thing in Cambodia, Denmark, Hong Kong, Indonesia and the Philippines. He also got into trouble with authorities in Cambodia and Indonesia. Holst visited Ho Chi Minh City at least once in June 2016.

Vietnamese lose appetite for ‘Made in China’ household electrical appliances
By VnExpress March 23, 2017 | 04:49 pm GMT+7 Thailand has taken over from China to become Vietnam’s top supplier of household electrical appliances. Vietnam imported around $240 million worth of household electrical appliances and parts in the first two months of this year, up 5 percent compared to the same period last year based on Vietnam Customs data. During that period, ‘Made in Thailand’ household electrical appliances won the hearts of Vietnamese consumers, who seem to be turning their backs on goods made in China. Thailand alone pocketed over $130 million, accounting for over half of the total. This represents a 3 percent on-year increase, while runner-up China experienced a downturn of 2.5 percent. Some markets saw impressive on-year growth such as Italy at around 170 percent and Indonesia at 40 percent. continue reading here http://e.vnexpress.net/news/business...s-3559836.html

Five Vietnamese dishes that have got global gourmets talking
By Nguyen Chi March 24, 2017 | 10:15 am GMT+7 Just this once, let's rule out 'pho' and sample the rising stars of Vietnamese cuisine. Bun cha, "cursing rice noodles", snails, duck embryos and banh mi - ever heard of them? They've been catching the attention of foreign visitors of late, and some have already made it onto the international culinary stage. Regardless of their sheer weirdness or genuine quality, these dishes have moved the country's culinary reputation on past the traditional pho. 'Bun cha' Bun cha never used to be a real competitor against other famous street foods, such as banh mi, pho and cuon (spring rolls). It was only popular in Hanoi because in other cities, even Saigon, people had never heard of it. But the dish’s destiny has taken a turn. After the visit of former U.S. President Obama to Vietnam in 2016, bun cha (noodles with grilled pork) stirred up a social media frenzy, and now the dish is renowned among international visitors. Unlike other favorites that contain secret spices like pho, the ingredients for bun cha are easy to find and the recipe is not that complicated. All you need is sweet and sour smoky broth, barbecued minced pork patties and soft white rice noodles, along with a lettuce, cilantro and herb garnish. Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 opens Facebook page for street vendors
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 03/24/2017 15:00 GMT + 7 The Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 administration has turned a suggestion to having local street vendors meet their customers on the internet, rather than the sidewalks, into a reality. While an ongoing campaign led by the district’s deputy chairman Doan Ngoc Hai is focused on reclaiming walking space for pedestrians, the vendors who once operated on the affected sidewalk areas have found themselves with no place to operate. At a meeting on March 20, Tran Vinh Tuyen, deputy chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City administration, tasked District 1 authorities with indentifying a reasonable plan that would allow vendors to continue to earn a living without blocking the pavement. The official suggested that there should be zoned areas for street peddlers, adding that seeking out ways for street vendors to harness the power of the internet should also be considered, according to Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper. Just days after Tuyen put the idea forward, a Facebook page named “Am thuc Quan 1,” or District 1 Cuisine, was created, attracting curiosity from local users of the world’s largest social network. Despite such curiosity, by Friday morning the page (https://www.facebook.com/phohangrongsg) had only attracted 170 likes and very few posts and photos. continue reading here http://tuoitrenews.vn/business/40187...street-vendors

Saigon looks underground to solve chronic congestion
By Trung Son March 24, 2017 | 07:00 pm GMT+7 The city aims to open at least one underground parking lot this year. Ho Chi Minh City is working on plans for underground development across the city, which will involve public projects such as parking lots and subway stations. The city’s Department of Urban Planning and Architecture has been ordered to submit a proposal to the prime minister for review next month. Details have not been discussed but the plan is believed to include a number of underground parking lots. The city aims to complete at least one of them this year. Investors of private buildings will be encouraged to connect their underground spaces to the public spaces developed by the city, it said. As the most crowded city in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City is home to nearly 13 million people, including migrants. By the end of last year, vehicles in the city had increased to 8.5 million, including more than 600,000 cars, according to official figures. Travelers are being caught up in heavier and more regular congestion. Public buses in December reported that the average travel speed in the city had slowed to only 18 kilometers per hour. The city also faces a severe lack of parking space, and this has been exacerbated by the ongoing sidewalk campaign that has banned parking on roadways and sidewalks. Authorities in the city approved a plan back in 2012 for underground development in District 1, which includes roads, parking lots, bus stations and shopping malls under Le Loi, Nguyen Hue and Ton Duc Thang streets, around Ben Thanh Market and at Me Linh Point near the Opera House.

Saigon’s parking lot owners say one-price regulation unfair
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 03/25/2017 07:30 GMT + 7 Parking lot owners in Ho Chi Minh City are screaming unfair at a city regulation limiting how much they can charge customers. The regulation was introduced in January by the city’s administration in an attempt to control parking lots that previously forced customers to overpay. Accordingly, prices for non-public parking lots are limited to VND4,000 (US$0.18) for parking during daytime --between 5:00 am and 9:00 pm, and VND5,000 ($0.22) for nighttime. For cars, the respective limits are VND15,000 ($0.67) and VND30,000 ($1.34). However, the one-price parking lot policy, applicable to both lots using modern technology and lots simply using poles and ropes, has been called unfair by local building developers. Nguyen Phu Cuong, head of customer service at Pearl Plaza in Binh Thanh District, said the building has been going against the regulation by imposing higher parking fees and heavy surcharges for those who leave their vehicles overnight. Cuong explained that such fees were introduced to discourage visitors not using the building’s services from taking up space in its already crowded lot. The plaza currently has three basements floors for parking which mainly serve the 3,000 people who work in its offices, as well as customers who visit the attached shopping mall, cinema, and supermarket. Prior to the introduction of higher fees, factory workers would park their motorbikes for the entire day in the plaza and take their company’s bus to work in the neighboring provinces of Dong Nai or Binh Duong, Cuong explained. Some even went as far as leaving their vehicles for months on end, only to be charged with a few thousand dong under the city’s regulation, he added, forcing those who actually worked in the building to find parking elsewhere. Similarly, the parking lot of Ho Chi Minh City’s iconic Bitexco Financial Tower in District 1 is also charging motorbikes VND5,000 ($0.45) per hour, while cars pay VND50,000 ($2.23) in the first two hours and an additional VND20,000 ($0.89) for each additional hour. Nguyen Van Tien, an investor behind a parking garage in Tan Phu District said it cost an average of VND4 million ($179) for each square meter of parking in his lot. At that price, a space large enough for one car costs VND100 million ($4,464), Tien said. Under the current parking fee regulations, Tien said it would take forever for him to see any return on investment. “Technically I’m allowed to charge customers higher than stipulated by the regulation, since my parking building does not fall under its scope of governance,” Tien said. “However, it would still take more than ten years to see a profit.” Tien said the cost of investment on underground parking lots is more than two times that of parking garages, a discouraging statistic for developers.

Haul of weapons discovered as police storm gear shop in Nha Trang
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 03/25/2017 11:24 GMT + 7 An officer carries a bunch of Japanese swords from the raided residence. Police in Nha Trang, the capital city of Khanh Hoa Province in south-central Vietnam, have found and seized a large quantity of different weapons as they stormed a local house on Friday. The inspection took place at around 4:30 pm, when hundreds of police officers raided a three-story house, whose first floor is disguised as a gear shop for travelers and bikers, on Tran Nguyen Han Street. Officers then found a large number of weapons including Chinese broadswords, Japanese swords, bows, and fishing guns. It took police more than two hours to classify and seal all of those weapons, with an officer speculating that the items could have been smuggled from the northern borders. The identity of the weapon owner and the exact quantity of the items are undisclosed, according to Khanh Hoa police, which are further investigating the case. Officers load the seized weapons onto their vehicle.

Vietnamese spend hours on nonsense, but not 20 seconds at red light
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 03/25/2017 12:55 GMT + 7 The curious mob is seen in front of the Hien Linh Parish in Ho Chi Minh City on March 23, 2017 Vietnamese people seem willing to spend hours on watching anything unusually happening on the street, but refuse to wait for only 20 seconds at the red light, a reader said in a piece sent to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper. Nghi Son wrote to Tuoi Tre after witnessing a tragicomedy in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday, which is a strong argument to back his statement on the weird time management of some Vietnamese. Waiting hours for a nonsense thing On Thursday afternoon, I got stuck in the traffic when a mob of hundreds blocked a long section of Ngo Tat To Street in Binh Thanh District, waiting to see police work on a dubious sack that smelled of dead flesh. I was about 700 meters away from Phu An Bridge when I could not move any further, as the street was filled with long lines of people. Hundreds of motorbikes and cars tried to inch forward, not knowing what had caused such a heavy jam. It took me nearly 30 minutes to get through the chaotic traffic to reach Phu An Bridge. There, I saw a number of people, standing wherever they could, all eyes on the entrance of the nearby Hien Linh Parish, where a big crowd of mobs and some police officers were gathering continue reading here http://tuoitrenews.vn/city-diary/402...s-at-red-light
