Young artists reimagine Saigon’s iconic food, drink
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 03/21/2017 18:30 GMT + 7 From a glass of iced coffee to a plate of broken rice served with grilled pork chops, the most iconic food and drinks in Ho Chi Minh City have become the subject for a group of young Vietnamese painters. ‘Saigon on the move’ is a project by members of Bui Fine Arts Center (Bui), an academy dedicated to the training of young artists, and which looks to depict Saigon youths’ favorite food and drinks in paintings. The works are a gift to “those who once stayed, are staying and will stay” in the dynamic southern metropolis, Bui wrote in the description of the photo album uploaded to Facebook on Sunday. Most of the dishes featured in the paintings can be found in the city’s back alleys and corners. Com tam (broken rice with grilled pork chops), banh mi (Vietnamese stuffed baguette), snails, baluts, banh trang nuong (grilled rice paper with toppings), banh xeo (Vietnamese pancake), iced milk coffee and peach tea are all favorites among Vietnamese and foreign visitors alike. The amateur artists behind these paintings come from a variety of walks of life, including IT experts, graphic designers, college students and construction workers who live in Hanoi, but all share a love for Saigon, a city of dreamers. continue reading here http://tuoitrenews.vn/lifestyle/4013...food-and-drink

Vietnamese air traffic controllers suspended for sleeping on duty, leaving shift
By Doan Loan March 22, 2017 | 10:50 am GMT+7 Two VietJet Air flights lost contact with the officers earlier this month in a case deemed serious by local authorities. Vietnam’s aviation authorities have fined and withdrew the licenses of two air traffic controllers at the northern Cat Bi International Airport after holding them accountable for communication breakdowns with the aircrew of two VietJet Air flights earlier this month. The two officers had “seriously violated” navigation regulations and failed to accomplish their missions, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) said in a statement released Tuesday. The accidents at the airport in Hai Phong City, around 100 kilometers (62 miles) east of Hanoi, severely threatened passengers' safety, it said. They were fined VND7.5 million (US$330) each and suspended for two months. The head of the air traffic control tower at Cat Bi airport has also been suspended, the aviation authority said. At around 10:51 p.m. on March 9, the pilot of flight VJ921, leaving Hai Phong for Seoul, was unable to connect with the air traffic control tower after making 29 calls. The connection was only resumed 50 minutes later. Earlier on the same day, flight VJ292 from Ho Chi Minh City had been scheduled to land at 11:30 p.m. in Hai Phong but the pilot was not able to communicate with air traffic controllers after 10 calls. He was forced to circle the airplane before finally landing at 11:39 p.m. An unnamed aviation official said one of the air traffic controllers was not present when the incidents happened while the other was sleeping. Vietnam’s aviation market is growing at the third-fastest pace in Asia-Pacific, with the number of travelers last year jumping 29 percent from 2015 to about 52.2 million passengers, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam. The fast development has put pressure on air navigation and caused overloads at major airports.

Saigon to ban vehicles from Bui Vien backpacker street
By Duc Huy March 22, 2017 | 12:00 am GMT+7 A night on Bui Vien in Ho Chi Minh City. Photo by VnExpress/Van Trai Shops and restaurants will be allowed to retake the sidewalks on weekends from 7 p.m. until 2 a.m. from April 30. For those worried about the fate of Bui Vien in the middle of the sidewalk cleanup frenzy, the city has announced a plan to pedestrianize the backpacker street on weekend nights from the end of April. District 1 officials at a Monday meeting said the 850-meter street will be saved for pedestrians from 7 p.m. until 2 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. During this time, vendors will be allowed to display their merchandise on the sidewalks, but not the road. The city will install CCTV cameras and deploy security guards to monitor the area. Tran Vinh Tuyen, the city’s vice chairman, said at the meeting that the street should add more cultural highlights like live music. “The area should stay vibrant,” he said. It’s still not clear what will become of Bui Vien during the week. Earlier this month the city asked shops and restaurants on the street to keep their business off the sidewalks. It has revealed a new plan to turn Pham Ngu Lao, De Tham and Do Quang Dau, other streets that make up the tourist center, into a pedestrian-only area after 6 p.m., but no timeframe has been set. The famous backpacker precinct, where all the lines blur between private and public spaces, between grill bars and sidewalks, between streets and dance floors, is posing a big puzzle for the city’s sidewalk revolution. District 1 officials have said the mission to clean up the city’s sidewalks will allow no exceptions. Anyone and anything standing in the way of city’s bid to become a Singapore-esque metropolis has been either reprimanded, pulled down or towed away. But many have expressed concerns that if the Bui Vien neighborhood is tidied up and all the fun has to be taken inside, the area's appeal will die. Then the tourists will leave, taking their money with them. Official figures show that the area draws 500 tourists every day, and 2,000 at its peak, pulling in more than VND37 billion ($1.62 million) a year.
