Vietnam's middle class projected to double by 2020
By VnExpress October 27, 2016 | 01:00 am GMT+7 Richer consumers will likely pull huge investment inflows into the country. Vietnam’s middle class population is believed to be growing the fastest in Southeast Asia, making the country a very attractive market for foreign brands. The so-called "middle and affluent class" earning $714 a month or more in Vietnam will double to 33 million people, about a third of the population, between 2014 and 2020, the Nikkei Asian Review reported, citing Boston Consulting Group. Meanwhile market research firm Nielsen has estimated that the number of middle class Vietnamese will reach 44 million by 2020 and 95 million by 2030. Global brands ranging from retailers and electronics makers to fast-food restaurants and property developers are flocking to Vietnam to seize the market potentials. Samsung commanded 35.6 percent of the market for mobile phones in Vietnam last year, with Apple in second place with 24 percent, according to research company IDC. With rising incomes, Vietnamese consumers are switching from feature phones to smartphones, particularly of top brands. Vietnam is currently named in the top five in Asia and ranked 11th globally in terms of growth in the retail market. Its retail industry has expanded 8-10 percent annually in recent years, said Sebastian Eckardt, a senior economist of the World Bank. Young population, higher disposable incomes, rapid urbanization and better living standards are said to be the main drivers of the sector's growth. Nielsen has found that almost 60 percent of 93 million Vietnamese are under 35 years old who are becoming better educated with more money to spend Foreign retail giants, including Thailand’s Central Group, Japan's Aeon and Takashimaya, and South Korea's Lotte, have already arrived. “It would be no surprise to see Vietnam to continue to attract huge foreign investment inflow into its retail market in the future,” said Eckardt. Aparna Bharadwaj from Boston Consulting Group told the Nikkei Asian Review that foreign companies should focus on selling cosmetics, telecommunications gears, high-end dairy goods, hygiene items and "experiences" such as travel.

Corruption a ‘serious’ problem in Vietnam: official report
By VnExpress October 27, 2016 | 10:31 am GMT+7 The government concedes that there have been many high-profile cases, promising strong action against corrupt officials. Corruption has become prevalent in Vietnam with a number of high-profile officials connected to serious cases, the government said in a new, extraordinary report sent to legislators this week. The National Assembly’s judicial affairs committee, after reviewing the report, hailed the government for its candor. According to the committee, this is the first time the government “has admitted openly” that many officials, including senior ones, have been neglecting their duties and failing to uphold moral standards and political virtues. In its report, the government said corruption remains a complicated problem and that “an increasing number of serious corruption cases have been uncovered and reported in many government levels and agencies.” The report also cited the rankings by Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index. Vietnam was ranked 112th out of 168 countries and territories last year. The report said, despite many anti-corruption efforts, over the past three years the average number of corruption cases brought into light has steadily declined. Courts have handled fewer corruption cases this year, with fines and recovered losses amounting to only VND92 billion ($4 million). The Communist Party has been re-educating millions of members about anti-corruption and virtues. The Party has also made it clear that the fight against corruption is critical to its leadership. General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, at the end of a six-day meeting of the Party’s Central Committee earlier this month, admitted that moral problems are eroding the ruling party. He said degrading morality and lifestyles among Party members are evident in corruption, cronyism, bureaucracy, opportunism and individualism.

Google Maps turns green light on traffic updates in Vietnam
By Tuan Hung October 26, 2016 | 11:46 am GMT+7 The new feature will have its work cut out keeping up with the country's crowded streets. Google has recently added a new feature to its Maps applications that allows Vietnamese users to get traffic updates before choosing a route. The feature is already available in other countries like the U.S, the U.K, Singapore and Germany. Traffic conditions are reflected by different colors. Green goes with low traffic roads while orange, red and dark red show increasing levels of traffic density. Grey indicates there is no data available. An initial test by a VnExpress reporter found that the application produced accurate results with data being updated every five minutes. Google Maps is available on App Store (for iOS devices) and Google Play (for Android devices). The new feature can be tested by selecting "Traffic" from a drop-down menu on Google Maps.

Police hunt Saigon restaurant owner who allegedly charged Australian $39,000 for dinner
By VnExpress October 26, 2016 | 01:41 pm GMT+7 The restaurant had disappeared before the Australian man could make a complaint. The search is on for a restaurant owner in Ho Chi Minh City who is accused of charging an Australian man $39,000 for a meal, according to an official statement released by police on Tuesday. Police are searching for 37-year-old Tran Thi Hong Phuong, the owner of downtown restaurant Nightfall on Thai Van Lung Street, District 1, who is accused of credit card fraud. Australian tourist John David Caracciolo earlier this month claimed the restaurant had charged AUD$39,429 to his credit card for dinner. On August 11, a waiter at the restaurant allegedly had John David Caracciolo swipe and enter the PIN numbers on two of his credit cards several times due to “technical errors”, according to a complaint filed by Le Kim Yen on Caracciolo's behalf. She also accused the restaurant of having failed to present Caracciolo with a receipt detailing the charges to his bank accounts. One month after the incident, Caracciolo, who claimed the credit card charges represented a deliberate effort to defraud him, returned to Vietnam to file a complaint, only to find that the restaurant has already closed. Local police have confirmed that although Tran Tuan Minh, Phuong’s 21-year-old brother, was legally registered as the business owner, he was not involved in the alleged fraud.
